There is a bit of a dilemma. I don't know whether to have Margaritas to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, or Mint Juleps in honor of the Kentucky Derby.
So, which horse do you like? I haven't been following it at all, but what I'd probably do is a $1 trifecta wheel on Hard Spun with all others. (How much would that cost me?)
When I don't know anything about any of the entries, wheel/box bets on entries with middling odds that can result in a big perfecta or trifecta payoff seem like the way to go, especially if you are there and see the parimutuel odds moving in such a way that might suggest new inside info or expert opinion favoring one entry or another.
Of course, I've only ever been to the horse races once (in Miami). I won about $600 on one race using the above technique, and promptly retired from horse race betting. I also bet on the dogs in Orlando and Daytona from time to time using this strategy, but not as successfully.

Mojito?
I dunno. I opted for margaritas with the missus.

Man, I thought my horse was going to bring it home. Nice come from behind and a strong finish for Street Sense.
Quite a race. Looked like a
Quite a race. Looked like a lot nicer day than we had here, too.
I really enjoyed the jockey's great glee at winning
I love Derby Day! My ex-husband was a horse trainer the whole time we were married, first at Suffolk Downs in MA and then at Calder in Florida. I spent a year being a hotwalker and let me tell you those people work hard! 4:30 a.m. to feed the horses every morning and then back again in the afternoon.
I tried calling MA to have someone bet on Curlin for me, but they'd already been to the track and were at home waiting for the race to start.
I love the Derby, but think the Breeder's Cup is the best-- a whole day of top notch races, and the consistency of the good horses make it a handicapper's dream.
The jockey's happiness was the best part. He looked older and maybe less "cool" than some of the more media savvy pros. My favorite jock is Edgar Prado. he used to ride for us before he became famous. He's a really nice guy. On Derby Day, I always miss being a part of the racetrack.
I wish they had thoroughbred racing here. I know a lot of people think racing is awful for the horses, but most of them are kept in the highest condition and beloved by the people who care for them.
I wonder who the Queen bet on?
We had a Cinco de Derby
We had a Cinco de Derby party. The mint julep may be the worst drink ever created. We had margaritas instead. I grilled some horse satay for appetizers, but I had to tell some folks it was pork after the quivering voiced lecture about a spiritual connection to horses.
Was that a happy jockey, or what?
