Following the announcement today that Gannett is spinning off their newspaper business, Nashville Public Radio files this report of yet another shakeup at Gannett's Nashville Tennessean newspaper:
Almost everyone will have to reapply for new jobs. There will be fewer managers, more reporters and columnists and a larger investigative team. But ultimately, the newsroom will shrink by 15 percent. Currently, the headcount is at 89. There are 76 positions on the new org chart.

I don't get the need to
I don't get the need to reapply.
Keep 'em on their toes,
(in reply to Pam Strickland)
Keep 'em on their toes, intimidation nonsense. Loyalty means nothing these days.
That's a corporate "reform" tactic.
(in reply to Pam Strickland)
It happens all the time in public schools. It's a way to get rid of older, more experienced, more expensive employees.
TVA has been known to do this
TVA has been known to do this also. Reorg, post all new positions, RIF everybody, and make everybody reapply on the new, slightly revised positions. But TVA has to give folks 60 day notice for a RIF. So the spouse once got paid for 60 days to sit home while he was reapplying and being hired back into his old job.
I kid you not.
Typical practice...
In business today. Make everyone reapply for their jobs so the new brass can make it look like they're being fair when they've really already made up their minds for the most part.
I went through a similar process 13 years ago with a huge conglomerate that merged a bunch of companies together. The ones making the decisions kept almost all their buddies and let go 98% of the people from the company I worked for, which was the only one making a profit.
I was laid off even though I was one of only two who got the highest award for profit that year and exceeded my budget every year prior. I was also 6 months short of being vested for a pension. Hmmm, I wonder if that played a part?
Ironically, years later, they dropped their name and took the name of the company I had worked for.
These big companies are ruthless. I feel sorry for people having to go through this, it sucks. But for these diehard Republicans (and KNS has their share of them), I shake my head, because you have helped make this bed.
...good ol' boys were drinkin' whiskey & rye....
"Larger?" That's funny.
The storyline I saw this morning said that the paper was going to dedicate two full-time reporters to the shopping beat.
