Amazon has just made two announcements, the $189 Kindle 2 has temporarily sold out, and the new Kindle 3 is available for pre-order with a delivery date of September 1.

Kindle 3 is somewhat smaller and lighter, boasts '50% greater contrast than any other ereader', and up to a month of reading on a single charge. There is a world of other goodies too, including 3G + WiFi and a WiFi-only version for $139.

I made a link but then I removed it. Go there from a KnoxViews link to put a few coins in Randy's til.

And yes, of course I ordered one.

Are we ever going to see one

Are we ever going to see one of these with a comprehensive enough text/trade book library to make it a feasible go-to for student/professional use? I'd love to get in on something like this, but I don't do enough recreational reading to warrant one as a standalone solution in that sense.

The Kindle DX was supposedly developed expressly for text/trade book use. I can't imagine using it for recreational reading because it's so darned big.

I read some time ago of at least one university supplying DXs to students but I haven't heard about an abundance of textbooks being available.

I just did an Amazon search for two books my cousin's wife left here from her nursing school days and found only hardback versions of Mosby's Medical, Nursing, & Allied Health Dictionary and Contemporary Maternal-Newborn Nursing Care. These two texts total almost eleven pounds so ebook versions would definitely be a blessing.

Of course they came out with a new version right after we just bought a second one so we could share e-books.

And thanks for the plug. Here's a sponsor link to the Kindle Store.

Maybe you could trade your latest one in on a new one.

And thanks for the link. I'll visit that page two or three times a day between now and September to drool over the new toy. I started my third childhood a couple of years ago.
