PAUL BURGESS of Spotsylvania County was director of foreign-policy speechwriting at the White House from October 2003 to July 2005.

WHEN I WAS speechwrit ing at the White House, one rule was enforced without exception. The president would not be given drafts that lowered him or The Office by responding to the articulations of hatred that drove so many of his critics.

This rule was especially relevant to remarks that concerned the central topic of our times, Iraq. Having left the White House more than a year ago, I conclude that the immunizing effect of that rule must have expired, because I now find that I am infected with a hatred for the very quarter that inspired the rule--the deranged, lying left.

I never used to feel hatred for people such as Cindy Sheehan, Harry Belafonte, Danny Glover, or other pop-culture notables who, for example, sing the praises of Central American dictators while calling President Bush the greatest terrorist on earth. I do now...

I used to laugh these people off. Now I detest them as among the most loathsome people America has ever vomited up.

I have also grown to hate certain people of genuine accomplishment like Ted Turner, who, by his own contention, cannot make up his mind which side of the terror war he is on; I hate the executives at CNN, Turner's intellectual progeny, who recently carried water for our enemies by broadcasting their propaganda film portraying their attempts to kill American soldiers in Iraq.

I now hate Howard Dean, the elected leader of the Democrats, who, by repeatedly stating his conviction that we won't win in Iraq, bets his party's future on our nation's defeat.

Hm. So Bush not only is calling Democrats terrorists, he's employing people who think anyone who detracts from his policies are "among the most loathsome people America has ever vomited up."

As Harold Ford says, these people who wave the Bible really ought to read it.

find the lie

Uncle, the lie is what Bush is saying, that Democrats want the terrorists to win. That is a much more egregious stretch than Eleanor's translating it into "Democrats are terrorists." If you want the Vols to win on Saturday, it's no great sin to extrapolate that you may, in fact, be a Vol. You might actually just be a gambler with a Benjamin riding on the game. Big deal.

Here is someone who suggests that Mr. Burgess go for some retraining:

I couldn't find out what Mr. Burgess is doing now. Selling cars from New Orleans? Evangelical fundraising? Or, like some other former staffers, preparing an appeal? This inquiring mind wants to know.

Uncle, you're hardly the poster child for not hating people's guts.

And it's actually pretty well established that Ford does say that a lot. The part about reading the Bible, I mean...Maybe you oughta try it yourself.

Or what?

" that Republicans up to and including the President have not equated Democrats and liberals in general with terrorists. To say otherwise is a LIE. "

Is Hastert Bush? Is The Conservative Voice Bush? Is saying 'terrorists will win if Democrats win' the same as calling Democrats 'terrorists'? May be in the land of moonbattia. Anyhoodles, I'd call you a liar but bonkers seems more accurate.

Oh, and the President has not equated Democrats and liberals with terrorists.

Now what?

"And don't even bother to ask...yes I am calling you a LIAR. "

Means a lot. I'm shedding a tear as I type.

"Uncle, the lie is what Bush is saying, that Democrats want the terrorists to win. "

See, Bush didn't say that either. He said "terrorists will win if Democrats win and impose their policies on Iraq". Which is different from either. It's a stupid statement but he's not calling Democrats terrorists.

You can argue semantics all

You can argue semantics all you want but saying that Bush and the rest of his ilk are NOT calling Democrats terrorists by IMPLICATION and INNUENDO is like saying Clinton really didn't have sex with that woman. It's convenient to whine about how people twist words when it suits you isn't it, but when the very same kind of twisting and spinning on the part of your team comes back to bite you in the ass it stings doesn't it? Arguing that Republicans have not equated Democrats and liberals with terrorists is like trying to define what the meaning of "is" is.

Clinton was wrong, and he lied, and he got caught, and he should have. Bush is guilty of equating Democrats and liberals with terrorists, and he is wrong, and he is caught, and he should be.

The Republican party is guilty of trying to make fellow American citizens (who love their country just as much as the Republicans claim to love it)  out to be in league with the terrorists and that is UNACCEPTABLE.

Just because we disagree with the policies of this administration does NOT mean we agree with the terrorists or approve of their tactics, Just because we think that there might be a better way to deal with the terrorist threat than bombing a country back to the stone age does NOT mean we want to let the terrorists run amok in the United States.

But, George Bush and the leadership of the Republican party would like for you to think just that, so go ahead and drink the kool-aid, don't bother to think about the little bottle beside the cooler jug with the skull and crossbones on it, that's just a special Yale University flavoring for ya, since you're "in" with the in-crowd.

A small contribution

As a back-bencher, I try to drop a nickle in the pot once in a while, so here is another that I think may be relevant to this discussion.

About twenty minutes ago I listened in to some of Rush Limbaugh's live interview with Mr. Bush. In the interview Mr. Bush mentioned that there are some of us who want to pull out of Iraq, and that if we do, extremist governments in the region would then set about toppling moderate governments there. At about one o'clock this afternoon, Fox News ran a crawler across the bottom of the screen indicating that U.S. sources believe Iran and Syria are preparing to topple the Lebanese government.

Could this be, or be part of, the real October Surprise? Could Mr. Kerry, quite by accident, have tripped on his tongue and stumbled onto the stage?

These guys are dead serious, and many won't be around long enough to realize their grand delusion if they lose the House, the Senate, or possibly both. It could be forever taken away. They are desperate and really could use something big to start the stampede.

Back Door Man

You have to wonder about Bush's relationship with Assad when he has Rice in a presser carrying on about how what a vile and evil enemy Syria is while at that moment a CIA plane is arriving in Damascus delivering another Maher Arar.

Is there something about this arrangement that I "just don't get", as the insiders say?
