Spotted in the NYT by the Mrs., here's a cool new real estate website:

http://zillow.com/

They provide sales history, property and tax info, and a "Zestimated" property value based on comps, and more. They say they have data on over 60 million properties.

I looked up the house we owned in Florida, and according to the "Zestimator" it has appreciated 85% in a little over five years since we sold it. The house we owned in South Knoxville has appreciated 73% in eleven years.

The "My Zestimator" feature lets you refine the "Zestimate" by correcting existing data, adding your own data about improvements or other features, and selecting different comps.

And the best part is that it's free, there's no registration, and it doesn't require any personal/contact info. Not sure how long that can/will last, but it's pretty nice.

NPR

NPR just had an interview on with the dude that started the site.  I wasn't really paying attention but the gist of it seems to have been that he was already rich and would have found this helpful when he was looking for a house so he started it.  I bet you could find it on their website.  I would but I have to go drink beer.

Heh.  It still thinks my 2

Heh.  It still thinks my 2 year old house is just an empty lot.  That or the property values have really gone down.

Same here.

Same here. I guess we'll have to check back when they have data on 60.000.002 properties.

(The aerial photo shows the house next door under construction, but an empty lot where ours is.)

Yep, a neat site, but...

A neat site, but I checked my parents' house in Oak Ridge.  It and all around it had to be off by at least a factor of 7.  The values shown were in the 14-33k range!  So don't forget to take that grain of salt.
