By way of Tom Humphrey, Haley Barbour told Kentucky coal mining executives that Obama's EPA regulations are "a deliberate way to try to halt coal mining, which would be catastrophic for Appalachian America."

Uh, I believe he meant to say "mining and burning coal IS catastrophic for Appalachian America."

costs of electricity

costs of electricity generated from coal, which is projected to cost from 6 cents to 15 cents per kilowatt-hour in four years. The 7700's cost per kilowatt-hour is expected to be well within those price ranges

King coal is dying

Republicans like the governor of Mississippi are not known for being progressive (heh). The excellent article about TVA's evolving energy portfolio in this week's Metro Pulse shows that even TVA is learning that coal's days are numbered, and it doesn't matter what they say about Al Gore or who controls Congress.

Appalachian lives forgotten but not gone

From the NYT, "My Polluted Kentucky Home."

The coal companies, the news media and even our own government have all been complicit in valuing Appalachian lives less than those of other Americans. Otherwise, it might be harder for them to get that coal out as quickly and inexpensively as they do.

Sad, indeed.

Amen, Biz, amen!

I totally agree. The loss of human lives in our mountains has never been factored into the cost! Last year's loss of 29 miners in the WV explosion was only a 2 or 3 day "public event". Massie Coal did not wait but a few days, until the gases dissipated before resuming production. It never allowed unions in any of its mines which further devalued the lives of its miners.
Barbour is a slug who even claims that "I was never effected by any of the civil rights struggles in my State" and wants to promote a license plate there honoring N.B. Forrest, a Civil War general, leader of the early KKK and a slave TRADER.
