Tennessee makes a bad special teams decision to run the opening kickoff out of the end zone (although in their defense it was a low kick), and Georgia scores first blood with a field goal (although to the Tennessee defense's credit Georgia should have had a touchdown).
At the same time, we're trying to follow the Ford v. Corker debate. Corker is already coming off lame. Ford: Leave my family out of it, let's be quiet on that and run for the Senate.
UPDATE: Tennessee answers with a touchdown and extra point after a well executed series. Georgia's defense puzzled. Eleanor says in comments Ford hammers Corker on abortion. Game on!
UPDATE: Georgia returns the favor with an awesome catch and a brilliant running play to regain the lead. Right now Corker is saying nobody mislead America on Iraq, and we should defer to the commanders on the ground. Apparently Corker wasn't paying attention to former commanders on the ground testifying before Congress last week.
BONUS UDPATE: Corker just said he wasn't aware of any inequity in higher education in Tennessee. EXTRA BONUS UPDATE: Corker just said education is one of the most important issues in the country and for this Senate race. Except, his "issues page" on his website does not list education as an issue, nor does his (incomplete) "blueprint for change" list education.
BONUS FOOTBALL UPDATE: Georgia returns a punt for a touchdown and extra point for a commanding 2nd quarter lead. Clearly, we are not going to be able to keep up (live blogging the game and the debate, that is). We will now turn it over to comments, carry on!
OK ONE MORE UPDATE FOR ME AND THAT'S IT: Georgia is whipping Tennessee 24 to 14 at the half. Ford v. Corker is over, and Ford seems to have won on substance points, but Corker may have scored on style. Ford is clearly the more knowledgeable and experienced candidate, but Corker stayed on his (lame) talking points while Ford appeared to be trying too hard. Ford needs to go back to his relaxed, confident, stump-style delivery and hammer home his points without trying to reach so much. Corker's pandering to his base is natural and expected. Ford's attempts to pander to Corker's base come across as a little desperate. Ford has no reason whatsoever to be desperate at this point.
(See above for the MORNING AFTER UPDATE. Oh, and GO VOLS!)

What a bunch of bullshit!
Corker denying he's slandered the Ford family every way from Sunday...
Ford just SLAMMED Corker for flip-flopping on abortion!! Sweet Jesus! What political theater!
Corker came to a gunfight
Corker came to a gunfight with no ammunition.
I'm sorry, could you repeat the question? I thought that every Tennessean had the same educational advantages that my kids have.
I dunno
Junior talked way, way way too fast. I know where he is on all these issues, and even I couldn't keep up with him.
He was obviously nervous, which is odd. I don't think I've ever seen him visibly anxious.
Recap
Great running blog SKB . . . good analysis
1. HFJ talked too fast. As said above, we know his positions, but still could not keep up w/ him.
2. HFJ did not peg Bob as "Big Oil." We gotta hammer that home.
3. Corker dodged the tax release by talking around it.
4. HFJ needs to explain the Medicare Drug Bill in simpler terms. I.e. we're paying $100 for a drug that should be $10.
5. If Corker keeps insulting "10 years in Congress" why is his spending millions to get 6 years in Congress.
6. Corker, as always was boring and simplistic. I almost wrote him a check when he said he was struggling to pay for his daughter's college cost.
Go Vols!
cspan sunday?
is the debate on cspan sunday?
Don't know, isn't on their
Don't know, isn't on their website yet. But see the roundup post above and the WREG-TV link to the archive and you can watch the whole thing.
Can we Afford Ford?
I would have to call the Debate a draw for all the reasons given above. Agreeing to debate in Memphis "during" the Tennessee v. UGA football game when few, if any, body outside Western TN would bother watching was pure genius by Corker's people. The gloves certainly will be off as the upcoming debates move eastward and the rest of the state is paying attention. On the other hand, Ford Jr. went out of his way to demonstrate that he "was" the smartest guy in the room. He stretched famously to add every possible topic to each Yes or No question he was given. Note: this a tactic that backfired famously for his mentor, fmr. Veep Albert Gore Jr. during 2000.
As for the high level of agitation by Ford Jr., it seems pretty obvious that the congressman was waiting for a question or comment on his "I am a lawyer" charade, which should be interesting given the unanswered questions that still abound about that subject including: (1) how many times he really took the Bar since graduating from law school during 1996; (2) why he would ever state on CNN with Wolf Blitzer or elsewhere that he is a lawyer; (3) how many years since elementary school he has really live and worked in Tennessee; and (4) what's up with a the high profile living Fancy Ford style while serving in public office.
Bottom line: The race is Ford Jr.'s to lose, but it is by no means won after Debate I.
You really like the word
You really like the word "famously", don't you?
I've heard Ford talk about failing the bar exam after he graduated, and I do not think he's ever tried to hide it. If this "lawyer" issue and the "Fancy Ford" label is the best you got, then you can stick a fork in little Corker -- not just for now, but once and for all -- because he'll be branded a two-time loser who has run three of the nastiest, most negative and most expensive campaigns this state has ever seen. One big reason it's slipping away from him is that the conservatives in his party haven't yet forgive him for the way he trashed his primary opponents, and signing on Tom Ingram, Chip Saltsman and Darrell Akins is not the way to get them back.
(2) why he would ever
(2) why he would ever state on CNN with Wolf Blitzer or elsewhere that he is a lawyer;
Link please...
Always back assertions with something more than hot, stinky breath...far as I know he never said he was a practicing attorney which is why you take the bar exam...to practice law. Anyone with a law degree would be a lawyer I do believe...otherwise why would they get that nice diploma that says they have a degree in law?????
"You can't fix stupid..." Ron White
Which event was Haslam clan watching I wonder?
They've got millions invested in both operations, big orange and big oil bob.
I'm not sure either is worth supporting.
It's a Good Thing...
"Clearly, we are not going to be able to keep up (live blogging the game and the debate, that is)."
It's a good thing that you didn't try to live blog the second half of the game!
No kidding. What a great
No kidding. What a great road win for the Vols!

Text and link to CNN quotes re being a lawyer as requested....
Congressman Harold Ford Jr. (D), Tennessee: “I think the general feeling is that people are profoundly disappointed with how he conducted himself throughout the interview. The blaming of others for some of the problems that he created for himself, the evasiveness early on in the investigation. I'm a lawyer, you know. You would hope that all of those who are interviewed would be truthful and candid and forthcoming” (CNN’s “Late Edition,” September 2, 2001)
(link...)
------
FORD: “I'm not a judge nor a jury, nor am I privy to any of the evidence. What I do know is how Gary has conducted himself since her disappearance. At a minimum, his conduct has been curious; at worst, it's been very, very suspicious. As a lawyer, I know that could mean absolutely nothing. However, as a member of Congress and one who respects this body and institution and has affection for my friend, I'm deeply concerned.” (CNN’s “Late Edition,” September 2, 2001)

Note: Graduation from law school simply means you are a law graduate. Passing the Bar and being sworn in to the Bar makes you a lawyer because you have a "license" to practice law in a particular state.
Pure Jeenyus
So anonymous blog attacks are Ingram's secret weapon to revive the Corker campaign.
Guess it's too late for a plaid shirt or an exclamation point.
How about a question mark?
Corker?
Or a colon:
Corker:
Or, since he's such a widdle fella, a semicolon:
Corker;
Probably couldn't hurt.
Can we Afford Ford? III
Beanster, you might want to lay off the refrieds and try some limas or greens because the videos foregoing apparently rendered you unable to respond to the content provided by the damaging videos of Prince Harold Jr. in all his glory.
See ya on the "East" side of TN as this campaign continues to heat up!
BTW, is it true that Ford Jr. graduated from High School, College and Law School outside the state of TN, but claims to be able to understand and represent the rights and interests of ALL Tennesseans?
Lemme see
Just so's I know to whom I'm speaking, here, Anonymous. Are you Anonymous #1, to whom I already responded, or are you a different fearless Corkette and therefore entitled to be addressed separately as Anonymous #2?
if only
Note: Graduation from law school simply means you are a law graduate. Passing the Bar and being sworn in to the Bar makes you a lawyer because you have a "license" to practice law in a particular state.
If only the line between sitting next to Laura Bush at the 2003 State of the Union address and passing secrets to Iran could be so clearly drawn.
Corker's Getting NRSC and NRP help for his fledgling campaign
Guess now we know why Big Jim Haslam is throwing hundreds of thousands of dollars at the NRSC and the NRP, so they can boost Big Oil Bob over the top.
