First, he admits that "enhanced interrogation techniques" (torture) were used and were approved at the highest levels including the White House.

Second, he is either self-aggrandizing his role (and incriminating himself in the process), or he reveals who was really calling the shots at the White House. (Say, whatever happened to that George W. Bush fellow?)

Third, he's a liar.

They are still trying to rewrite history and create their own reality.

RELATED: Obama on National Security

As Commander-in-Chief, I see the intelligence. I bear the responsibility for keeping this country safe. And I categorically reject the assertion that these are the most effective means of interrogation. What's more, they undermine the rule of law. They alienate us in the world. They serve as a recruitment tool for terrorists, and increase the will of our enemies to fight us, while decreasing the will of others to work with America. They risk the lives of our troops by making it less likely that others will surrender to them in battle, and more likely that Americans will be mistreated if they are captured. In short, they did not advance our war and counterterrorism efforts -- they undermined them, and that is why I ended them once and for all.

Former VP ChenY

VP Cheny has every right to give his opinion on the matters to which he spoke so well yesterday. The President, who seems to give a speech virtually every day about something, takes every opportunity to bash the previous administration. He keeps saying he wants to move forward but speaks as if he is still running and bashing. I think all of us are a little surprised to learn all this talk about water boarding only applied to 3 people. From the amount of coverage one would think all the prisoners
were subjected to it. I suggest we do move forward and allow the congress and the President to implement their plans and see where it takes us.

I think all of us are a little surprised to learn all this talk about water boarding only applied to 3 people. From the amount of coverage one would think all the prisoners were subjected to it.

It's the perpetrators who made waterboarding the focus of the conversation. The way Rove framed this issue, you would think everyone who was tortured was a terrorist mastermind with plans to kill thousands in his head, and that doctors carefully monitored all the abuse.

Yet more than 100 people died in our custody, and thousands were abused and humiliated. What the "only 3 people" fact illustrates is how few prisoners were actually valuable enough that they might have knowledge of a planned attack. The 3 people who were waterboarded are the exceptions; the deaths and all the other abusive practices are the real scandal. Fixating on waterboarding is just a way to ignore the bulk of the matter.

I'm not so sure, Obama is promulgating a double standard

He want to address our captured combatants midful of the "rule of law" and the constitutional guarantees applicable to detainees. On the face of those arguments, it seems plausible and perhaps well meaning, however, where was the "rule of law" when the government was brow beating Chrysler bondholders and lenders into submission, threatening to run their reputations and create going forward problems for them. Under the constitution, Congress shall no abridge contracts entered between parties, yet the government has done all they can do to thwart the rights and remdies these creditors of Chrysler (and eventually GM) regarding the billions of dollars they have invested in these businesses, such that the ownership of the manufacturers can be vested in the UAW.

In my opinion, Obama is just another political bully, using soundbites and speaking opportunities to advance his own political agenda and eventually he's take positions or advocate items which are not palatable to the American people and certainly not palatable to Democrats who have to run next year, of which there are several.

KC's picture

First, if you put Cheney in

First, if you put Cheney in prison, it hurts the Democrats. He helps the Democrats more, the more he talks.

Second, he's trying to revise history and publicly make a case why he should not be tried, and, of course to make himself look better (link...)

Unfortunately, I think the media is missing the real reason Cheney promoted torture, and it's even more insidious than the reason Cheney is giving.

The real reason that Cheney and others promoted the use of torture was to send a message to the terrorists that the U.S. could be as ruthless and brutal as they were.

That was also the real reason for the Iraqi invasion: to send a message to the Arab countries, especially Saudi Arabia, that the U.S. would use force to advance our policies.

Shortly after we went into Iraq, the Saudis started raiding terror groups, with a large number of those terrorists being killed (dead men tell no tales). And a number of other countries started cracking down on terror groups in their countries.

So to get back to Cheney, never having served, he's one of those who think it's OK to send U.S. troops to the battlefield, and for some to their graves, to send "a message."

The truth is much worse than what the media, with its obsession for an Obama and Cheney (or anybody) superficial political cage match, is reporting.

If you think about it, there

If you think about it, there was never much fuss from the Administration about EITs becoming public. The renditioning and secret prisons were a little different because of the exposure of other countries' complicity.

But all in all, for all that became public, it's as if the Administration didn't care or they wanted it to become public.

It's more than a little disturbing when you realize that the nation's leaders were/are championing techniques and tactics that many believed put the "evil" in Evil Empire and that led many on both sides of the aisle to denounce despots and dictators in the past.

Cheney defending the Bush administration

is a lot like Heinrich Himmler defending the Third Reich and his Fuhrer.
I don't see any difference...

Much like Himmler manipulated Hitler Cheney manipulated Bush and as we know manipulated everything from the war in Iraq to quashing people who disagreed with him in the administration..to trying..we have learned to waterboarding a senior Iraqi intelligence officer to try to manufacture a link between Iraq and Al-Queda...

As much of a fascist as we have had in recent memory in a leadership position in our country...

Oil . . . Texas Tea!

I still believe the main motives for the Iraq invasion were the manipulation of crude oil prices and the opportunity for cronies to rebuild the country. Bush may have actually believed he would convert them all to born again Christians in the bargain.

Torture was a tool used to help fake a marketable pretense for the deed.

I'd like for my government to keep our homeland safe

that is one thing they can do with the tax dollars I leave with them every quarter. I really am not concerned about how they question islamic terrorist they have pulled from the middle east as long as they are not executing these prisoners like Americans are butchered in the Middle East. I'd ask Daniel Pearl's widow how we should treat these terrorist, she would know first hand the pain they have caused Americans, it's more than 9-11, its an ongoing process to ferret out people who would like to kill Americans because they are Americans and have planned or are planning to do so. The genocide of the American people and destruction of the American nation is on the minds and in the hearts of thousands of Islamic terrorist and the sooner we realize that this threat is out there, the sooner we can end the debate and let our military, our special forces, our special ops, our forces we know noting about, and our military tribunals do what they are designed to do and that is to protect American citizens, the better of we will be and the quicker Obama can continue his efforts to rebuild the American economy. For citiznes residing in America, security in our own nation from foreign threat is the governments primary function. The fact that our country has not been successfully attacked does not mean we are completely safe. We will never have a moment where Ryan Seacrest can tell America, "You Are Safe". It will not happen and we will never have that luxury ever again.

Islamic terrorist are not kids from the inner city who have come from a broken home, grew up on the wrong side of the tracks, made bad grades in school, got in trouble at an early age, didn't have a chance to get out of the hood, no, no, Islamic terrorist are educated, they are well read, most speak more than 2 languages, they have unusually high aptitudes, they are very well traveled, most have traveled to Western Europe, Africa, and even the United States before embarking on their mission to bring death and destruction to our nation. They have been taught that to kill Americans (or other infidels) particularly if they destroy themselves in the process, is a one way ticket to Paradise and the more innocent Americans they can take, the better off they will be in Paradise. If properly armed, they will not envy you, nor speak to you, nor your position in life, instinctively, they will shoot you in the head and then move on to the next innocent American standing next to you. This is their sole mission in life and is will take our collective resolution as a nation to survive these attempts to destroy our country. Let's pray they get no assistance from somebody like the army of North Korea, nor the army of China, particularly should our country default on the global monetary indebtedness we owe that nation, particularly under print it and spend it mentality of the current administration.

You could have saved yourself a lot of typing by knowing what you are talking about. We did execute prisoners, dozens, slowly and torturously. And our military is designed to follow the Geneva Conventions, but the Bush administration preferred to act like brutes instead.

We don't need paranoid bedwetters like you anywhere near serious policy discussions.

Get up and out of Knoxville and the small town mentality and visit a few known and attempted terrorist targets and reside in some communities and places where peoples lives and daily habits have been and are constantly altered and interrupted by security/enhanced security to maintain a level of vigilance and caution. I seriously doubt the UT football stadium is a priority for the Department of Homeland Security and I doubt the Islamic jihad has settled on any targets or casualty opportunities in East Tennessee. Consider yourself and your community fortunate, however, don't expect to set national policy or defense strategy on what is not happening in the rural bygones of East Tennessee and don't put that token mentality anywhere near serious policy discussions.

You know who is not a threat to Oneida, Knoxville or New York City? Terrorists who are IN PRISON IN U.S. CUSTODY. Your degenerate babblings are irrelevant to this discussion, and since you have nothing to say about the deaths and abuse of prisoners it is likely you have no intention of being serious in this discussion.

The brothers and sons and cousins of prisoners who were abused or killed in our prisons are most certainly a threat to all of us. This is why Republicans lost the White House and so many Congressional seats and ought to lose even more in 2010. The bedwetter approach to terrorism does nothing but create two enemies for every one killed. You prattle on about national security, yet you can not even recognize that imprisoning terrorists makes us safer. You want to compromise that safety by abusing those prisoners. No wonder no one trusts Republicans anymore. It's not so much a political party as a gang of degenerates herding a mob of fools.

America will be far safer if we can muster the courage to put those degenerates -- Rumsfeld, Cheney and Rove -- behind bars. They can watch all the cable TV they want, none of it poisoned with their lies any longer.

Here's the choices for

Here's the choices for Republicans:

General Colin Powell-- Professional Soldier

Former VP Dick Cheney-- Professional Politician

Talk show host Rush Limbaugh-- Professional Talker

Like a real commander, Powell is telling the truth and trying to help the party become successful by telling what it needs to do to better itself.

Like an experienced politician, Cheney's covering his can and trying to distract from his monumental failures of the last eight years.

Like an experienced celebrity, Limbaugh is doing whatever it takes to keep the crowd's attention on him.

For Republicans, the choice shouldn't be that hard. If it is, the party deserves to wind up in the ash can of history.

As you may not be aware (apparently), the GOP is at risk of becoming irrelevant. Will the party take a new path and abandon the Cheney/Limbaugh wing, or continue to bask in its self-righteousness as the voters continue to move away from it?

A group of people best described by an unrelated line in a book I read. They are mostly wrong but never in doubt.

Too many of the party faithful have presented issues in the "right or wrong" context. Some actually believe you cannot be a Democrat and a Christian. (link...)

What these people can't or don't want to understand is that extremism alienates. By its nature it is not welcoming or inclusive. Only when nurtured by fear and hate do extremist groups develop and grow. If GOP leaders continue to use those tactics and strategies, they deserve to have a dead party.
