August of this year will mark the 50th anniversary of Woodstock. Over the last couple of days I've been recording a vinyl copy of the Woodstock album to digital. It's pretty great.

According to a sticker on the cover I bought it for $2 from a used bin, although I don't remember when or where. It had a lot of snap crackle and pop that I cleaned up with software. Then I decided it sounded better and more authentic to the times with the snap crackle and pop intact so I saved it that way.

Anyway, I was only 14 at the time so I didn't attend. But listening to the album got me to thinking about how many of the bands who played at Woodstock I've seen live in concert since then.

To the best of my recollection, it's only two: Johnny Winter and Crosby, Stills and Nash (and Young, who I saw separately). We have tickets to see Santana, so that will make three if all goes well.

How many have you seen?

Winter, Neil Young (with you

Winter, Neil Young (with you two--loudest concert ever), Santana a few times, but I don't think it was the same band as at Woodstock. Also Mountain, the Dead, John Fogerty (solo), The Who (after Moon's death), Joe Cocker (IIRC), and BS&T.

You didn't see BS&T?

Good list! No, never saw

Good list!

No, never saw BS&T. Regretfully. Our sock hop band played a lot of their stuff, though.

Going through the artists and set lists, the album has some curious omissions. Guess they could only cram so much on a three LP set.

Also, just noticed Edgar Winter appeared with Johnny. We've seen him a few times.

LOL, yes!

You mean the original Woodstock album? If memory serves (damn, go easy, Somebody), there were numerous technical problems with the record and the film due to rain, (probably) drugs, technology limits of the day, etc. I want to say that the Jefferson Airplane didn't make it for that reason, though I imagine "somebody" will mansplain me the trvth.

BTW, I just added a Qobuz subscription to Roon. Oh man!! Why didn't I do this long ago? Inexhaustible supply of awesome music, a lot of it high res.

Yes, the liner notes mention

Yes, the liner notes mention the technical problems and harsh conditions.

Jefferson Airplane has one song on the album (Volunteers). But, nothing by Johnny Winter, BS&T, CCR, Janis Joplin, Mountain, Grateful Dead or The Band.

I have seen Youtube videos of Johnny Winter and Janis Joplin at Woodstock. There may be others. I think I read that BS&T's set wasn't that great, so maybe that's why it was left off.

P.S. Qobuz just launched in the US this month. They are still building their US catalog, but I already like it better than Tidal.

Loving the new and improved Roon Radio feature. You pick an album, artist or genre and it starts playing a mix of similar/related music with tracks from your library and from Qobuz (or Tidal). Discovered a lot of new stuff and stuff I forgot.

(Did not see Baez either.)

Do you subscribe to both Tidal and Qobuz? I would have been fine with MQA hi res files, but Qobuz does make it simpler by just running them natively. As you had stated before, Roon pairs so well with either. The radio features are indeed a highlight. When I read Qobuz has a big jazz catalogue and was released for subscribing as of Valentine's day, I just went with it. This is the future.

I put Tidal on pause to try

I put Tidal on pause to try out Qobuz. So far I like it better and will probably switch. Their apps are much nicer and not so hip-hop oriented, although that doesn't matter so much with Roon. Haven't noticed any glaring holes in their catalog, but I haven't done any deep dives. I only have the hifi (cd quality) subscription. Sounds pretty great on my setup.

Good to hear the favorable

Good to hear the favorable comparison for Qobuz. I like the artist-owned model of Tidal, but I got to admit I was a little wary about paying for a catalog that may be focused on music I don't care for (hip-hop, pop, etc.).

I wasn't there either, but

I wasn't there either, but I've heard there was a lot of mud and bad acid. It's probably a miracle anyone remembered to hit (and/or find) the "record" button at all.

I wanted to watch the CCR

I wanted to watch the CCR video that was linked, but it seems to have been removed. Guessing it was forced off for legal reasons.

Of that entire list, I've only seen Arlo Guthrie and Joan Baez - both together at the 1967 Newport Folk Festival.

Santana at the World's Fair

Santana at the World's Fair Park. That was a great show. We also had them at the Tennessee Theatre a couple of years later, around 1997 or 1998, pre-renovation. That was spectacular.

There were at least two Woodstock record releases back in the day - the original 3 lp set, then Woodstock Two, which was two lps. The latter, if I recall correctly, was the one that included Mountain, the Airplane, maybe Paul Butterfield and others not on the original.

I too was 14 when the festival happened. But I'm fortunate to have seen (and worked with) many of the bands that played. Many played Knoxville over the years - Richie Havens, Melanie, Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez many times (and coming in April too to the Tennessee but sold out already), Santana, John Sebastian, Mountain, the Band, Johnny Winter, Blood Sweat & Tears...also Fogerty but not Creedence and Jefferson Starship but not Airplane. Others I've been fortunate to see elsewhere: Ravi Shankar, the Grateful Dead, CSN&Y, Country Joe, The Who several times - from Quadraphenia days on...

I also remember waiting with the audience patiently in our seats twice - once at the Civic Coliseum and once at Stokely Athletic Center - for Sly & the Family Stone to walk on stage and perform. They never did. That amazing Sly show - along with the Santana performance - is the highlight of Woodstock on film for sure and I regret never having actually seen them perform live. But I did try.

My sister gave us tickets to

My sister gave us tickets to Sly &The Family Stone in the 70s, I believe. They cancelled. I loved them and even had a fringe jacket like Sly's.

Also loved Joe Cocker. Wish I'd seen him.
