In their endorsement today, the Knoxville News Sentinel says:
...both are working very hard to be the next U.S. senator from Tennessee....their styles and backgrounds present striking contrasts.
And it is largely on their differences in background - solid business experience and a Tennessee lifestyle - that we endorse Bob Corker.
OK, then. But, where is Bob Corker actually from? Why, I believe he's from South Carolina. Curiously, the KNS failed to mention that. And where is Harold Ford Jr. from? He's from Tennessee.
As for Corker's solid business experience, we agree that he is a successful businessman. And if he hadn't lost the 1994 primary to the ineffective and embarrassing Bill Frist (which has to make you wonder, if Frist has turned out so bad how bad was the second choice?), Corker would now be touting his Congressional experience instead. Sort of like the Congressional experience Harold Ford Jr. already has today. Harold Ford Jr. knows how a bill becomes law. Bob Corker knows how to work the law to bill somebody for services rendered.
As for his "Tennessee Lifestyle", Corker is probably in the top 0.2% or so in terms of income and wealth in the state of Tennessee. I'm guessing that not many of the 14% of people living in poverty in the state of Tennessee can relate to Corker's "Tennessee Lifestyle". Nor can the hundreds of thousands working for minimum wage that Corker doesn't support raising unless there are strings attached for his business pals. Nor can the one million without health insurance, or nearly half the people in this state either without insurance or on Medicare or Medicaid. Maybe they could relate to Bob Corker's "Tennessee Lifestyle" if only they could be admitted to the country club.
Corker is also proud of the fact that he attended the University of Tennessee, where he says he graduated with a bachelors in Industrial Management. Apparently, the KNS and Bob Corker think government and politics are an industry to be managed for personal gain and for the benefit of their special interest pals.
And we agree that their "styles and backgrounds present striking contrasts." The contrast is that Harold Ford Jr. will represent the working people of Tennessee. Bob Corker will represent special interests, big business, big oil, and the status quo.
I am R. Neal and I approve this message.

"Tennessee Lifestyle"?
One question: What in the hell exactly is "a Tennessee lifestyle"? What a lame use of logic to substantiate why KNS is endorsing Corker. Why not come out and just write that they endorse Corker b/c he is BFF with the Haslams.....
What in the hell exactly is "a Tennessee lifestyle"?
It's code for having the protected right to be a selfish, irresponsible yokel.
a Tennessee life...
what about that other bloated spot with Fred Thompson (a Hollywood life?) (um... that is him, inninit?) All *slow draw* woeful, where at the end, he says something like "we need somebody like him up there, , I know."
He sounds like a worn out slug, circling the beer dish for a warm bath.
didn't some in his party dog him with that same line when he wanted out?? It just struck me as strange.
UPDATE: I just heard a similar spot where they have a slightly more upbeat ending. Accept no substitutes, watch for the other one if they haven't pulled it.
Heard the woeful Fred
Heard the woeful Fred Thompson ad, no matter what words he speaks, that is the saddest delivery I've heard in a long time. Does someone have a gun to his head? He shows more enthusiasm on Law and Order.
As for "a Tennessee life" I have no idea what the KNS is talking about, but neither do they. Rich carpetbaggers here for the pickings? Some HGTV fantasy dream world? Those folks are completely out of touch with Tennessee reality, as is Corker, as is the local Republican machine. If they got out more, they'd get an earful from the peasants. Republican or Democrat, there's a lot of dissatisfaction out here in real-life Tennessee.
Le't Talk About Fred Thompson
Married a staffer in his office, some 30 years younger than he is, they've had a baby, don't know if there were issues between these 2 when he bolted the US senate. He arrived in the senate with much praise and aclaim and did absolutely nothing, not one damn thing while he was in office. Bolted for TV as a lunk on Law & Order.
Bring ol' Fred out to play, he can't stand the heat and he did zip for Tennessee while in the senate, he'll at least Dr. Frist has dumped several barrels of pork in Tennessee.
Ha! God's Old Party family values
I'd nearly forgotten about that stuff. Come to think of it, Fred had WUITE the reputation. When he was first running for office, every time some Republican chick on the GOP circuit got pregnant and popped out a big, ugly baby, there were whisperings about said big ugly baby's parentage. Evidently Ol' Fred cut a wide swath (even though he's a pretty old dude). GOP operatives I knew worried about rumored abortions and whatnot and feared that this ungodly behavior would come back and bite him in the butt. It didn't, but his social life was the stuff of rumors for a long, long time, expecially when he was "dating" that honky-tonk angel country music singer.
well said...
I couldn't agree more...
Sure, everyone knew the KNS would endorse Corker, but I figured they'd come up with a slightly better reason... not that I can think of one.
Bob Corker offers nothing... zip, zilch, nada...
Harold Ford Jr is a man with vision... He has run his campaign on new ideas to fix the current affairs of government and better the lives of all tennesseeans.
If anything, Ford is too conservative for my liking.
I hope Tennessee voters are smarter than the editorial staff here in Knoxville.
newspaper endorsement
I must have felt the psychic vibes coming from my rolled up paper, for I let it lanquish in the driveway today. The rascal made it INTO the house by way of a guest who thought he was doing me a favor. It's still lying there on the counter, unread. I'm glad I didn't have to read that (incredibly transparent) endorsement.
