WATE's Hayley Harmon, no relation, had a source mislead her on a story appearing in tonight's 6pm newscast. The source, Joe Burchfield, complained about handicapped access at Belle Morris Elementary School, but a quick check of KGIS records shows Burchfield has been assigned to vote at Larry Cox Rec/Senior Center as long as it has been a voting location. For the record one more time, Belle Morris has a handicapped ramp. Handicapped access has not been a problem. It's a shame a young reporter got burned by a source on this one.

Typical lack of effort in vetting the source

These boobs hired by Channel 6, 10, 8 and to a lesser extent the News Sentinel are not seasoned, they are not hardened, they have no local familiarity with the cornballs that want to stand in front of the television camera, in short they are not journalists and they are easily misinformed and misled by those with alternative purposes besides getting on the television.

Many of the reporters are way too trusting looking for a deadline or looking for a chotski to show their regional manager (particularly at Channel 10 which is Gannett owned) and they make lots and lots of mistakes and get a lot of things completely wrong or without the necessary balance or context that is the hallmark of good (not great) television journalism.

I wouldn't blame the reporter, who is probably young and not from here and doesn't know the players. This is squarely on Burchfield and whoever introduced him to the reporter. I understand there was an election commissioner there -- not quite sure who, but will find out. (I guess I could watch the story, no?)

WATE

Election Commissioner Bob Bowman was interviewed at the Larry Cox center. He stated that they had compliments from some voters saying the Cox site was much more accessible.

We have it on our DVR for anyone that wants to see it. Mark did call WATE and spoke with them about it.

TV news reporting (at least

TV news reporting (at least their web transcriptions) seems to be getting sloppier. It's probably worse when they are rushing to get stories out on election night.

Here's an example from WBIR:

Alcoa passes half-cent sales tax increase

Director of Alcoa City Schools, Dr. Brian Bell, says crews could potentially break ground on the new school by November of this year. If all goes according to plan, the school is set to open in January 2013.

They're going to build a $30 million school in two months?

And this headline:

Greene Co. residents vote down $20 sales tax increase

It was actually a $20 wheel tax.
