[Top executives at HP] are ringing an alarm bell about what they see as a looming disaster, not just for HP, but for the entire U.S. tech industry. They say that unless we boost government spending on science, technology, engineering and math—STEM, in industry jargon—we will be unable to keep up with countries like China and India. At some point, companies such as Apple, Cisco, HP, IBM, Microsoft and Oracle could be eclipsed by foreign rivals, just as Ford, General Motors and Chrysler have been.

They aren't asking for a bailout, just some basic investment in brainpower infrastructure. This is a must read, so go read it.

Something to consider in

Something to consider in that piece. Instead of a bailout they say "We should strengthen the strong."

Maybe...I say we should strengthen the things that made them strong. Challenge our children to learn more, with greater challenges to those who can achieve more. Our state considers bright kids to be "special needs" children. How self defeating is that?

Hold On!

Governments investing in people and education is communist, isn't it?
Can't we privatize education first or something?
What has HP been drinking, getting off the approved talking points like that?
And then Newsweek printing such nonsense! Damn liberal media!

"The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice."

Not just that!

They want to invest in science, which means things cloning and stem cell research and evolution and lions and tigers and bears oh my!

Voting is like driving. If you want to go backwards, select R. If you want to go forward, select D.

STEM High School

The new Super wants a STEM high school in or near downtown Knoxville (but possibly at AE, he hasn't been specific). Will Knoxville support it?

These companies have been investing heavily in training for high tech jobs for many years..in India, China, and elsewhere, and moving jobs there as quickly as they can.

Talk of the Nation/Science

Talk of the Nation/Science Friday (NPR) had an interesting discussion on this very topic last Friday.

Personally I'd like to see a lot more money pumped in to NASA and other private space based companies. Paving streets isn't the only way to stimulate the economy.

Exactly! Sheesh. Plus, they'll probably hire non-citizens to do the work. Hah!
