Tom Salter advises that he is withdrawing from the race for County Commission seat 5-C. He has just today accepted a position as Knox County Solid Waste Director.
Mr. Salter says he does NOT believe county employees should hold elected County office, so he "will go to the Election Commission office tomorrow and complete the necessary paperwork to remove my name from the ballot."
He also says that as of Dec. 10th, the day he starts his new job, he is getting out of politics, but that any Democrat interested in running for County Commission 5-C should contact him and he will provide whatever information and assistance he can.
Congratulations to Tom on his new position.

I spoke to Tom last night
I spoke to Tom last night about this. Congrats to him. This is an important position and he will fill it well. Anyone interested in 5-C should get in touch with me.

Please help me understand why should they contact you?
From Tom's email here's how to get started:
There is still time for someone else to run. You have until 4:30 on December 13th to file your qualifying petition. You only need the signatures of 25 5th District Voters to get your name on the ballot.
You have until 4:30
It's noon.
The qualifying deadline is noon, Dec. 13th
Of course, if you are a
Of course, if you are a Republican you might not want to do that. But if you are a Democrat interested in running, I'd like to meet with you since I am the party chair. Then again, I realize there are Dems who may shun any help from the party. To each his own. But I live in the 5th, have a list of over 2,900 names and email addresses for the combined precincts in the 5th, nearly 200 yard sign locations, etc.
The Appointment is Occassioned by his Politics
I suspect that Tom Salter is just really beginning to get into politics as that is how his appointment came about and there will be requests for his participation in other political activities in the future. He was a formidable candidate in Seat 5 C, would have done a good job, and the best way to beat him was to toss him a job, some health insurance, probably a car, and get him out of the race and out of the way. This is how Mike Edwards got his job at the SuperChamber, as they threw him a job (a rather high paying one at that), lots of perks, some whammys, a matching 401(k) and moved him out of Bill Haslam's way first time through.
Let's hope Tom does well with the solid waste authority as it's a flashpoint topic in the new millenium and the community needs realistic solutions to the waste problem over the long haul.
However, the first thing that should be tossed in the trash can are the notions that he's out of politics, as the forces that put him in that position, can just as easily pull him out of it.
Tom Salter
Tom got the job because he can do the job & do it well.
When Tom says something you can take it to the bank.
Tom said he is out of politics..that means he is out of politics
PERIOD
Tom Salter
The only reason that a job that would interest Tom is even open is the horrible, untimely death of John Evans. Any of us, with Tom at the top of the list, would do anything to have prevented that.
Ragsdale 2010, you have no idea what you are taking about and you should have the deceny to apologize to Tom Salter for what you have even implied about him.

Thank you, my thoughts exactly. Rags2010's post was sickening.
Born at night --
But not last night.
One part of that post is most prob ably correct, however:
It could well be a twofer for Ragsdale. Hiring Tom doubtless removes a potential obstacle for someone else, although it will be hard to get a Democrat elected out there, whoever it is.
