Ruby Tuesday statement on guns in bars and restaurants

A corporate headquarters spokesperson for Ruby Tuesday Restaurants told KnoxViews that the company has not issued a formal statement on recent legislation to allow handguns in Tennessee restaurants and bars, but that the company has no plans to change existing policies or to prohibit guests with permits from carrying handguns in their restaurants as long as they are complying with state law.

He said the issue will likely affect bars more than restaurants, and that in Ruby Tuesday's experience very few guests bring weapons to their restaurants where it is allowed. He said there are no plans to refuse service to guests legally carrying weapons or to attempt to determine if a guest is doing so. He also noted that guest safety is a top priority, and that management and staff are trained to take swift action to resolve potential threats. He also noted that the company has procedures in place to monitor alcohol consumption and management and servers are trained to avoid over serving.

so how exactly will business owners know if someone who is carrying a gun is violating the law by having a drink? seems like the new law is rather silent on any enforcement issues of these regulations.

It's not the over-serving that is an issue. It is the fact that they probably won't ask if you are carrying concealed before they serve you alcohol at all. Even one drink CAN affect your judgment and reflexes...that is my biggest problem with this whole issue. I think anyone that has taken the time to go through the training and weapons safety courses offered by the state should be allowed to carry, but NOT in bars or restaurants where a calm good time can quickly turn into an alcohol-fueled mayhem. I know too many people who THINK they can hold their liquor well enough that they would NOT abstain from drinking when they are carrying and THAT is a recipe for disaster.

Do you ever eat out when traveling outside of TN? Then you have been visiting restaurants that serve alcohol and allow handgun carry. This is nothing new. Over 30 states allow handgun carry in restaurants that serve alcohol - and many of those permit the consumption of alcohol while carrying. Get your panties out of a wad...

The guns-where-alcohol-is-served bill has been around for years. Jimmy Naifeh used his power as House Speaker to prevent it from going to the floor for a vote. With Naifeh gone, the legislature is making up for years of stalling on this bill.

A budget won't matter until the Governor has to start closing parks and rec areas that are currently free to the TN public. Then the public will interested.
