Wonder how many UT students had him for introductory econ?

I remember the Spiva days!

It was back in 1970, and even then they had closed circuit TV lectures. I had heard he worked summers for the Ford Foundation for a $1, but that was just rumor to me, however, I was intrigued by the possibility. I wondered what kind of salary does a college professor draw anyway!

Sorry to hear the news.

My family lived in the same

My family lived in the same neighborhood as his for a while. I didn't know him well and never took one of his classes. He was always very gracious to all us young people that came to visit his kids. He will be missed.

I'm always impressed when someone continues working as long as he did. He was definitely accomplished in his field.

Went fishing on the Little T with him and a couple of other guys ages ago. Super nice laid back guy.

I had him (on television) for econ. One of his "things" was to rail against the athletics department.

How little things have changed.

The Law of Diminishing Marginal Returns, per Spiva

Tony on the Law of Diminishing Returns

Assume you are out mowing the lawn one hot summer afternoon and after finishing you have a cold, frosty beer. My, how good that is. It tastes good. It feels good. It is the highlight of your day - that cold glass bottle in your hand while the cold beverage just hits the spot.

So you decide to have another.

The second beer is soooo good. Not quite as great as the first one, but it just hits the spot after an afternoon of pushing a mower around the yard.

So you have a third. Then another.

After your 11th beer, and you've puked all over your garage, you realize that the first beer was the best one of the day. And each successive beer produced less utility, until the final marginal beer actually produced negative utility.

Beer

One of my favorite lines in a songs is, "I don't want another beer. I just want the last one again."

I remember Dr. Spiva

I had Dr. Spiva for Econ. One of the more interesting and enjoyable large lecture classes I took. Great guy.

What I remember most about

What I remember most about him was his regular appearances on TV. Channel 10, I think.

That he lent money to Phil Moffatt and Chris Whittle that enabled them to start 13-30.

That he cut his finger off in some kind of lawn mowing accident.

That he was an interesting, entertaining and very generous man.

Dr. Spiva

I had Tony Spiva for econ and like others on this thread, have fond memories of attending his TV lecture classes.

I remember once he gave an entire lecture wearing a God-awful wig. Never mentioned the wig, or why he was wearing it. Just went about his class.

Didn't actually meet him in person until several years later when I interviewed him for a story. He was a great interview and I turned to him more than a few times.

I think he was a part owner

I think he was a part owner of the Tennessee Theater for a while some years back.
