Apparently KNS has an interesting news story re : Padgett tomorrow.

I'm not big on negative campaigning, but if you play with fire, prepare to be burned. I don't think arrest records should have been ever brought into it.

And BTW, I don't care much about the speeding thing either, if speeding was all it was.

marytheprez's picture

Thanks, BB, and her defense was brilliant.

Gene Patterson stayed focused on all the accusations from "the other side"...wasted at least half of this debate yammering on about idiocies instead of getting any specifics out of her opponent about HOW he would create jobs...HOW he would help small business, etc.
Madeline was brilliant in her responses to all this wasted rhetoric...yes, she was 'arrested' in the past for peacefully supporting those who had no voice. Yes, she did vote for 5 tax increases that PAID for up-grades to Fulton and A-E high schools. And NO, she is not about unionizing police, firemen and city workers. THAT is against STATE LAW.
I was there for most of it, but I left early...after I got to ask my question. It was about public education. And I doubt that even 5% of those who were there have any idea about the fact that Haslam and Ramsey are working hard to give away our public schools and our tax dollars to the huge 'for-profit corporation'. Charter/private/tuition schools, "on-line schools", blah, blah. And the City Mayor really has little power in protecting our teachers and our children from this ultimate operation of GREED.

Oh my.

I only have to say it again:

Play with fire, plan to get burned. Bringing up labor arrests was a stupid play, I'm suspect MR campaign would have sat on this if he hadn't brought it up.

Dave Prince's picture

I can't imagine how long it

I can't imagine how long it would have sat there untouched regardless of who did or didn't run with it. Google "mark padgett arrest" and see how many results you have to sift through before you find that. It's not exactly taxing work.

reform4's picture

But..

.. I think most Knoxvillians would not have thought to google "Mark Pagett arrest" or "Madeline Rogero arrest" until today. Mark made a stupid move to bring it up, and if this blows the way many people suspect, he will have no one to blame but himself. One one hand, I feel bad for MP and feel that this kind of thing has no place. But if you create/bring up the issue, it's hard to muster the same level of sympathy. But it is still there, regardless.

Dave Prince's picture

Hell, I didn't even think about it until I saw this thread.

I do wonder if his campaign tried to make it less easy to find. The site I was talking about Googling has a "how to get your image off our site" link.

The question

Hubert Smith asked both candidates if they were arrested? Mark's arrest was for speeding and Madeline's for civil disturbances. Come on. Why don't you just play the famous "call me commercial done on Harold Ford Jr."

It was a "gotcha" question to Madeline. She answered straightforwardly, and then a moderator asked the same question of Padgett.

And that's when it came out.

Padgett's anonymous online surrogates have been trying to push this out for some time now. Looks like somebody was hoist on his own petard.

And btw, J. M. Hancock is the last person who should be obsessing about arrest records:

Hoist by his own petard

Hoist by his own petard indeed, although I've noticed that some of Padgett's surrogates are not exactly rocket scientists.

Padgett has a mug shot for SPEEDING? Who gets a mug shot for a traffic violation?

I'm still a bit confused.

reform4's picture

Conjecture

It's reasonable to be confused. In most places, people are not booked and mug-shot for speeding. My source indicated that the official charge was 'reckless driving', which, again, people don't get formally booked for in most cases. If this was a Spring Break kind of thing, perhaps it was pled down from something other than reckless driving.

This would all be conjecture, but one can only wonder because of the mug shot. Otherwise, I agree, it doesn't make sense. Hopefully, there will some clarity added soon.

Do people really get booked and photographed for going 60 in a 40 in Destin???

Rachel's picture

The WATE story says that

The WATE story says that Padgett said he was arrested for reckless driving and plead down to a non-moving violation. He also rambled about 40 and 60 mph zones.

I GUESS you could get arrested for reckless driving by going 60 in a 40 mph zone, but it seems more likely the cops would just write you a ticket.

Anyway, as I've said before, I don't care about Madeline's civil disobedience and I don't care about Padgett speeding. I'd just as soon nobody had talked about either.

Although at least getting arrested for civil disobedience is something you can say you're proud of.

bizgrrl's picture

I know someone who got taken

I know someone who got taken to jail for "speeding" here in Blount County. Don't think it resulted in a mug shot or actually being in jail, but it did require a call to a lawyer and a stop by an ATM. So yes, it can happen. It can just depend on the mood of everyone involved during that particular event.

reform4's picture

I suppose...

.. mouthing off to a cop would do it, but that doesn't seem Mark's style to do that!

R. Neal's picture

bizgrrl is being too polite.

bizgrrl is being too polite. The "someone" was me. It was about 30 years ago, and I asked for it by being a smart ass. That was before I learned that all you need to say to cops is "yes sir" and "no sir."

(Tip: don't throw the ticket on the hood of the cruiser after signing it and then don't burn rubber leaving the scene and get immediately pulled over a second time for reckless driving and then don't tell them it's harassment and you're going to get a lawyer. They will be happy to accommodate your request to consult with counsel.)

They were nice enough to stop by an ATM so I could get bail money. They took me to the judge's house and he came out on his front porch in his bathrobe and took my bail money and they let me go. The lawyer (a relative) got the whole thing thrown out if I promised to not be an asshole in the future.

Bbeanster's picture

A more interesting question

A more interesting question might be whether someone lied to the FOP about ever having been arrested. I understand they always ask that of candidates.

It sounds like Madeline got the best of the exchange - and of the one on taxes as well, although I hate that Hubert used Padgett's negative campaign mailer as the basis for a question.

But those have been citations that didn't even require me to get out of my car. Never have I been jailed or mug-shot.

Factchecker's picture

You lie! (w/ fake apologies to Joe Wilson)

Mark's arrest was for speeding...

Speeding is not the same charge as reckless driving. "But I will" can go back under his/her rock now.

Cool story, skb! That's hilarious in retrospect. I'd love to see a video of that. I did stuff like that, though I wasn't quite as brazen when I got hauled in. Yes, we pretty much learn to just be really polite to law enforcement. Whether you think they deserve it or not, and they almost always do, they deserve the benefit of doubt and it will keep your ass out of trouble.

Another tip: I used to never slow up too quickly when spotted by a cop while speeding. I thought it was unsafe to hit the brakes and also an admission of guilt. I learned over time, though, to always hit your brakes hard (after checking your rear mirror). They love seeing that and I've never been pulled over since.

rryan1963's picture

m.,

It's also a charge that they can "throw" at someone with Tennesse Tags, driving 20+ miles over the posted speed limit in a speed trap at 11:00 PM at night, on the Friday night of Memorial day weekend.

So what?

rryan1963's picture

Thank you Team Rogero,

Walton County, as in Fort Walton Beach and Destin, is notorious for arresting people going over 20 miles over the speed limit. Arrests for this type of offense has become standard in many parts of the country. Padgett said that the speed limit dropped quickly, as in the area in front of Oak Ridge High School that drops twice in a half a mile.

Trying to allude to some other type of offense being plead down is just plain a lie, especially considering the KNS story, that appears to have done enough research on the story to actually have talked to the arresting officer in Padgett's case, but didn't do it for Rogero's cases.

Gene Patterson didn't ask any questions, he repeated questions that had been asked by members of the audience, or the Panel.

We moved here a little over

We moved here a little over three years ago because of work. I was so excited to meet like minded Democrats in Tennessee. I see that just like in California every place has extremists that just can't help but devour good Democrats.

There are two Democrats running for Mayor. What is wrong with you all? The same group of people are doing what they always do, making things up. There is not one bit of proof about either arrest for either Democrat. So the rumor mill goes nuts.

Our family was originally for Madeline. We thought Mark was too conservative. But Madeline's supporters here have changed my mind. My husband had decided for Mark some weeks ago. He only cares about jobs. We went through this in San Francisco. We saw it happen state wide. We have to work. And in California that became too difficult. We love Knoxville and Oak Ridge. We love Tennessee. But this stuff here is too much like California. If you don't have any proof, why don't you just keep your mouth shut? The one thing I do see is that 38 year old women with young children shouldn't be protesting anything. They should be supporting their kids. She was divorced when she was arrested. That isn't what I want in a Mayor.

Rachel's picture

There is not one bit of proof

There is not one bit of proof about either arrest for either Democrat.

You're behind. There's proof for both of 'em.

The one thing I do see is that 38 year old women with young children shouldn't be protesting anything. They should be supporting their kids.

Wow. Sexist much? Are you sure you're a Democrat?

I see that just like in California every place has extremists that just can't help but devour good Democrats.

Here's the deal. I supported Madeline in the beginning for a lot of reasons (I also supported her 8 years ago). But the main reason I couldn't support Padgett was simply his lack of experience. If he'd been running for Council, I thought, he might have been a fine candidate and someone I could support.

However, I could no longer support Mark for any office under any circumstances. Surrounding himself with county Republicans like JJ is pretty much the kiss of death. Add to that him going around saying "government isn't the solution, government is the problem" - while promising to use govt to bring jobs to Knoxville - is both too far right for me and more than a bit hypocritical. Now he's sending out negative campaign brochures.

If I'm "devouring" him, he's offered himself up on a plate.

BTW, what makes you think Padgett would be able to bring jobs to Knoxville? I admire him for starting a small business (even if he did use his daddy's county govt contacts to get all his business), but how does that translate into a big time job creator for Knoxville? Everytime he asks "who do you want sitting across the table from a world class CEO?" all I can think of is how a world class CEO would, well, devour Mark for lunch.

We love Knoxville and Oak Ridge.

Just curious, which one, if either, do you live in?

BusyMom's picture

There is nothing that proves

There is nothing that proves the DUI slander Rogero supporters here are grasping for against Mark Padgett.

No woman should travel to another state to protest for a union or any reason and leave their kids behind. They shouldn't get arrested either. It puts the kids in a tough spot with classmates. That is the height of selfishness. Rogero wanted to move to Ohio and take her kids there against the divorce decree. That isn't what I want in a Mayor. Rogero is above it all. We lived through that in California. People like Rogero ruined our home state. I can't believe I believed in her. I voted for her in the Primary. My husband skipped the Primary. His radar is better than mine. We have two votes for Mark.

bizgrrl's picture

I just re-read this entire thread, and nobody here has mentioned DUI. Please point me to the post that does cause I can't find it.

No woman should travel to another state to protest for a union or any reason and leave their kids behind.

For any reason? Srsly???

One of my neighbors travels extensively for her job. She leaves her kids behind with their father when she does. They are two of the happiest, most well-adjusted children I know.

I'm pretty sure Madeline's children are proud of her.

You are entitled to your opinion. But don't be surprised that most of us think your opinion belongs in the 1950s.

So,if I understand correctly,

So,if I understand correctly, the example that a mother should set for her kids is that other peoples issues, regardless of how important they seem, regardless of what sort of slippery slope they are at the top of, regardless of how their outcome might affect the nation, those other peoples issues are just not as important as a mother verifying for the umpteenth time that the lessons she has been teaching her kids for years have been internalized. Did I get that right? It would also appear that no mother should trust her kids to have any level of independence until they leave home, right? I can't say that I'm glad my mom is dead but I sure would have hated for her to find out what a bad parent she was what with giving us room to be responsible and all.

But seriously, did you ever really support Madeline?

Factchecker's picture

Release of the trolls

The trolls have been unleashed. We can conjure any sympathetic arrest story we can imagine if it will help mitigate damage for the struggling, job-creationist candidate, but beyond that we have to stick to known "facts" (not really) that implicate the front runner in the worst light.

Madeline has clearly devoted most of her life to improving the world and changing it for the better, even if it means being hauled in for civil disobedience (dropped both times, unlike Padgett's arrest). How many can say they have been so unselfish as to jeopardize their legal record and their own safety for a cause they thought truly worthy? Learning about this, my respect for her has only increased. I don't harbor a grudge for Padgett that he did something really stupid, and it does not disqualify him per se, but this issue is not helping him. They ought to drop it.

cafkia's picture

I do not care at all about

I do not care at all about Padgett's arrest. I have done my fair share (x3) of stupid shit and some of it has gotten me arrested. I learned (I think) and haven't been a guest of the city or county for over 20 years. A lot of guys have to learn things the hard way. I am in no position to hold that against someone as long as they appear to have learned. However, as an example of - things of which we are not proud - and why you should avoid picking up the rocks in your glass house, it is perfectly usable.

SnM's picture

job creationsim

That's great. The belief that the city and its peoples originate from specific acts of a divine "job creator," as in the biblical account of job creation, rather than by complex interactions, such as evolutionary processes of cooperation between the department of community development and the private sector.

cafkia's picture

I will also state that

I will also state that Madeline is a friend of mine and we do communicate. Occasionally I have received a suggestion that I tone it down or, that I request that of a mutual friend/acquaintance who is also a supporter. However, I have never been asked to, or heard of anyone else being asked to, smear her opponent either using truths, half-truths, or lies. It simply has not happened.

If in fact a Madeline supporter is smearing Mr. Padgett, you will need to supply some pretty hard facts to convince me that it happened with even as much as Madeline's approval. Convincing me that she originated a request to do such will probably require Divine intervention.

Rachel's picture

Padgett sent out a THIRD

Padgett sent out a THIRD negative mailer about the taxes thing today. That's three in a week.

In addition, an anonymous mailer was sent out by "A Concerned Knoxville Republican" that was so nasty I don't even want to cut and paste it. I'm sending it to Randy to do with as he sees fit.

Pam Strickland's picture

BusyMom, what do you think of

BusyMom, what do you think of a grandmother who took her pre-teen granddaughter to walk on a union strike line? That's what I did when I wax 12. It taught me a lot about standing up for people's rights.

I admire Rogero for what she's done.

And while I think what Padgett did wasn't the brightest of moves, I really don't see it as news.

I am generally reluctant to make assertions about online commenters' statements about themselves -- that is, if they are who they represent themselves to be -- but "BusyMom" is a pretty hilarious construct. Let's see, if I want to try to score points on a politically progressive forum, who should I be? Hmm. A woman! From California! With a scientist husband! A scientist husband who just happens to have studied the Hillside Plan and found it wanting! And a self-identified Democrat -- who even voted for Madeline in the primary! -- and has now switched to Padgett because "she" is just so impressed with his talk about jobs.

Come on now. I don't mind the subterfuge so much as the clumsiness.

Gender Genie agrees that "Busy Mom' is indeed probably female but a longer post would be required for a more definitive analysis.

As to being a Democrat, it appears her disappointment with all the Republicans flunking out of the race has left her with the necessity of plugging for Republican Lite.

Voted for Madeline in the primary?

Somehow I doubt that although it's possible that such a sexist voted for her against all those men thinking she was another June Cleaver.

Suspended Knoxville Lawyer Removed from Pellissippi Board

Amid allegations that he engaged in securities fraud and theft of client funds, suspended Knoxville lawyer John Mark Hancock has been removed from the Board of the Pellissippi State Foundation. The Pellissippi State Foundation serves to raise capital and an endowment for Pellissippi State Community College. When he served on the Board earlier this year, Hancock was listed on the Pellissippi web site as Chair/CEO/President of Hancock & Associates Consulting. However, Hancock apparently is self-employed.

Peggy Wilson, Vice President, College Advancement for Pellissippi State Foundation confirmed that Hancock has been removed from the board. Hancock is the subject of a civil lawsuit filed by one of his former investment clients alleging that Hancock told investors that he had performed due diligence on a mining company, Double Crown Resources, Inc. (DDCC), which Hancock claimed in writing had active and functioning gold mines. After the price of the stock collapsed, investors discovered that the company owns no gold mines or proven gold reserves but has simply bought property on which it seeks gold exploration.

Pellissippi State acted swiftly to remove Hancock from the board, so that the foundation's reputation woudl not be tarnished. For further information about the Pellissippi State Foundation Board, please phone 694-6528.
