The media has picked up on the story first reported at RoaneViews about the United Mountain Defense volunteer who was arrested by TVA police on made up charges.

Instead of calling TVA out on heavy-handed tactics and harassment, the Knoxville News Sentinel decided to go with the TVA Public Relations Press Release version, which is 90% TVA's side of the story and includes some new "facts" that sound made up.

(The byline is "News Sentinel Staff." Apparently their reporters are ashamed to sign their names to it. Why not just put "Gil Francis" as the byline?)

WATE has a somewhat more balanced report. Between that and comments at the RoaneViews link above, folks who are interested in the questionable TVA/Roane Co. law enforcement tactics will get a much better picture of what's really going on.

UPDATE: Here's the AP version in the Nashville Tennessean. Compare and contrast to the KNS "staff" version, which appears to have come from the same AP report. The story is also getting some national independent media attention. Why is WATE is the only local media to cover this?

TVA Policing

Personally I find it distasteful that TVA is allowed to set up a "checkpoint" on a public road - like this is Iraq or something - and check for papers. The videotape of the cop not being satisfied with a passport for identification and repeatedly asking for a drivers license from someone who was not driving is horrifying also. Last time I checked this was still America and asking for "your papers please" without probable cause of a crime is outrageous.

What fence?

Inside what fence? They are blocking a county road and asking residents to display passes to travel on a county road to get to their privately owned property. They check the papers of people who do not have a displayed pass.

How is this legal and why are they restricting access to a county road?

They surely can't claim

They surely can't claim there are any hazards in the area. It's as safe as any disaster mishap site Christine Todd Whitman ever visited.
