Some folks in Roane Co. are divided as to whether United Mountain Defense's presence is helping, but there's no call for this. Interesting discussion and background in comments over there.

One of their most "customer service" oriented officers according to some, while others remember him as the guy who worked Mickey D's so he could pick fights.

Can anyone help me

Can anyone help me understand why so many people in Roane and elsewhere are so suspicious of United Mountain Defense? They seem pretty straight forward to me.
People seem to think they are doing all this work on the coal ash spill for their own benefit. Newsflash!! There's little to no money or personal recognition in the kind of work UMD does.

Alex, I think it's a perception problem that started with TVA the day after the ash spill. As we're learning through a lawsuit against TVA for nuisance, the agency is extremely territorial and it is trying to scoop up every piece of land it can and settle every claim it can without interference from outsiders, whether that be lawyers or environmental groups. TVA's fear is that every piece of data collected by United Mountain has the potential of tacking on untold dollars to every potential settlement or lawsuit. TVA is riding that horse all across Roane and shouting from every rooftop "don't help or trust UMD." There also appear to be well-founded reports that TVA is telling property owners that the only way they'll settle a claim is if you haven't hired an attorney, yet, its TVA's attorneys who are negotiating the settlement of claims with unrepresented landowners.
