When South Doyle Middle School teachers showed up for parent-teacher conferences this evening at 5, supper was waiting for them in the break room.

So was 13th House district candidate Eddie Smith, in what was pretty clearly a violation of KCS policy:

(link...)

Solicitation or advertising in any form by candidates for public office or political or issue oriented organizations is not permitted. Political literature shall not be distributed through the school to students, nor sent home to parents, nor placed in teachers’ mailboxes, lounges or on school premises. Political advertising in any form shall not be permitted on school facilities, on school grounds or in school publications.
Exceptions to this restriction are as follows:

(1) For election days at those school facilities that are used as polling places, political signage may be placed on campuses that host polling places beginning at 6:00 p.m. on the day prior to the election. On election days at these locations, election officials will determine the placement of advertising and the permissibility of solicitations. All such materials must be removed by the candidates by 7 a.m. the day following the election.

(2) Political office holders and those campaigning for political office may provide sponsorships, as defined above. The Knox County Schools maintains the right to provide appropriate recognition of such sponsorships.

(3) Candidates for elected offices within Knox County Schools or Knox County government which are not voted on by the general public (e.g. a representative to the county retirement board) may advertise under this policy, but candidates for office which is voted upon by the general public (e.g. school board) may not use Knox County Schools information systems to promote their candidacy.

Apparently he was invited by a teacher, and
he showed up bearing cookies. He got an earful from several teachers, and was asked what was up with the stupid Lane Kiffin ad. He said he's not responsible for what outside groups do. When a teacher told him that Gloria is the teachers' voice in Nashville, he said she doesn't have a seat at the table.

Gloria "doesn't have a seat at the table?"

What does that even mean???

My guess he means she's

My guess he means she's irrelevant because she's a Democrat.

Rachel: Any speculation as to whether Smith is correct on how South Knox perceives Gloria? Thought the Dem club out your way used to be pretty strong? You're one of the few folks I know from there to ask.

Betty: Yup, it took me just two clicks on Google to link that same damning article (on TN Federation for Children) at KNS. Their piece AND WVLT's piece looked lazy to me.

Depends on what part of

Depends on what part of southknox you're talking about. Inside the City, Gloria is well thought of. But we're not in her district (darn it). South Knox County is reliably Republican territory. But teachers make for a wild card....

Powerless to his benefactors

He said he's not responsible for what outside groups do.

But he'll repeal Obamacare.

The point is that he agrees with the pro-voucher group's efforts--and is widely on record to that effect--which is precisely why they're funding his candidacy.

Eddie Smith does not have a

Eddie Smith does not have a clue about education or any other issue important to Tennesseans. He would be a mindless supporter of Haslam and all the other Republicans determined to destroy public education in Tennessee. Debate the issues? Why should he debate in a town where most voters do not vote for their own interests and do not care if the candidate is qualified? For most of Knox County voters, the only qualification needed is to have an "R" beside your name. Teachers that vote for Smith or Haslam or any of the Republicans that are destroying public education in our state should get a mental exam immediately! Teachers that continue to support Republican candidates like Smith and Haslam, deserve what they get in return. They should apologize to other teachers and also to the students in our community that are hurt by Haslam's policies.

You know I agree with every word, Michael--folks like Republicans Doug Overbey, Bob Ramsey, and John Forgety excepted.

Factchecker's picture

I understand that school

I understand that school "choice" (vouchers) is the overriding issue with AFC and the other groups fronting Smith, but I think it's the other way around. The GOP is pretty monolithic on this. Either they get a patsy candidate who is strongly for this position, or anyone the GOP finds is easily game to be on board with it. The issue and a few others are driving their candidates. The money for the ads was spent. AFC just filled in the details, like Smith's name, on the mailers.

The GOP is pretty monolithic on this.

Yeah, looking at that legislative "report card" of TREE's that Mike Knapp shared with us, I see a combined total of just seven Repubs in both chambers to have voted against vouchers.

Even Bob Ramsey, whom I noted above as a "good guy" (and whom TREE awarded an "A") supported vouchers. Unless that dash means he was absent for the vote?

To their credit, Nicely and Duncan-Massey were among those seven voting against.

The money for the ads was spent. AFC just filled in the details, like Smith's name, on the mailers.

And I suspect you're right about this, too.

Gloria Johnson

Gloria Johnson is one of the most honest, knowledgeable, sincere politicians I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. She says what she means and means what she says. She does not run negative ads; instead, she stands on her words and actions. Furthermore, she has been an advocate for our students, parents, and educators from the time I first met her, which was approximately a year or more ago. She is a person of integrity! I hope and pray she will represent us again!

Eddie Smith

I just read an Eddie Smith ad that came to my mom's this morning. Tennessee Federation to Punish Children PAC sent out another bunch of bullshit! A picture of Eddie Smith smiling face on one side of ad and a picture of a baby on the other. The baby should sue Smith and the PAC for defamation of character! It is sad to think of how many voters will vote for a mindless candidate like Smith.

So wonder how he spent $1000 for gasoline in the Third Quarter???

reform4's picture

Whaaat?

I guess he drove from house to house rather than walked.

Or maybe a lot of gift cards to use later on other things?

Or maybe Pilot gave him some special "Manuel Rebates".
