It is amazing, but true. Cormac McCarthy, one of the world's most reclusive authors, will actually be on the Oprah show in the coming weeks. It will be his first ever television appearance.

In his book Sutree Knoxville's own Cormac McCarthy painted a colorful, but often dark picture of the outcasts, alcoholics, and homeless folks who lived along the banks of the river here in downtown Knoxville.

Sutree, a loveable, incorrigible, sometimes funny but always broke, and broken man, ambled about Knoxville back when trolleys crisscrossed the town and Market Square was really a large, bustling marketplace.

He's a tough read because his descriptions are so lengthly and intricately woven, but he's worth every minute. McCarthy is a master of words and a genius at painting portraits of people who exist in existential isolation.

He has a huge fan base. Mostly because of his novels Blood Meridian and All the Pretty Horses. A film based on McCarthy's No Country for Old Men will be released this year, and he is also considered to be a top contender for a Pulitzer.

Child of God

"Child of God" is one of the most demented - and fantastic - novels I've ever read. It's about a dude named Lester Ballard who trolls around Sevier County, kills women and has sex with the corpses.

That's what I hear...

Demented is what I hear, Elrod. I've yet to read one of his novels, but a friend advises that Cormac McCarthy is to literature what Sam Pekinpaugh is to film!

GW Harris

Ah, if Oprah could only interview George Washington Harris. That would be truly demented.

Is it true?f

This is an old string I realize. Not an avid oprah fan or non fan, but did this interview happen or air?

McCarthy lived in El Paso TX, for a time and the house has become? an historic site. Going down next weekend and will check it out.

Long Live Texas!

Yes, Oprah interviewed him.

In spite of every intention, something came up and I missed it. I think it is still accessible on her website if you're a member. Just type his name in the search box. I like Sutree for its flavor of the derelict world in Knoxville way back then. McCarthy can be very funny, (the bit about Sut getting arrested for having sex with watermelons was just too amusing to me), but he's always dark. Sutree is a hard read because McCarthy is wordy to the max. If you're not into savoring his wordsmithing, his vivid descriptions, no matter how beautiful, tend to get wearisome after awhile. Everyone ought to at least delve into this book though. The man is, I think, a literary genius, and no one will shoot you if you don't make it to the end. Hope you enjoy the house experience.

Thought I'd never say it

but I'll watch Oprah.

Child of God was the first book of his I read, followed by Suttree and then pretty much everything else. Haven't read his new one yet, but each book has left lasting impressions.

Of course, if Sam Peckinpah had ever been on Oprah, I'd of watched that one too.
