Back to the Future
It's the Marty McFly version of the lunar landing.
Oops.
OTOH...Bwahahahahahahaha!
Would have gone right by this
Would have gone right by this if you hadn't pointed it out. Ha ha ha.
The kiss cam
and other "let's hope it goes viral" branding and advertising.
From time to time, I'll see the "kiss cam" video that is obviously staged, but people still pass it along as real anyway.
I think the same thing happened with Steve Harvey and the Miss Universe pageant. Before him awarding the wrong contestant, when was the last time you'd heard anything about that pageant?
At any rate, it's things like those that has me looking suspect at this ad.
What y'all don't know
What y'all don't know is that 1969 is the name of a line of jeans that The Gap carries. Because I know this it took me awhile to figure out why you thought the ad was strange. I have a pair of 1969 jeans that I purchased last year hanging in my closet right now. I'm guessing by this ad they've updated the line. Why they named the line 1969 I have no idea.
Knowing they have a 1969 line
(in reply to Knoxgal)
Knowing they have a 1969 line of jeans doesn't make the ad any less stupid. Look more carefully at the picture.
You are correct.
(in reply to Knoxgal)
I had no idea Gap had 1969 jeans. I thought Apollo was a Roman God, not a Challenger.
Idiocracy
(Face palm.)
I'd like to believe that
I'd like to believe that folks who comment here intelligently have at least a minimal grasp of history over the last 40 years. I'd like to--but it appears that's not the case.
Appears there exists a gap in
Appears there exists a gap in the creator's knowledge of our space exploration history.
Ahem
(link...)
Ahem back at ya
(in reply to Knoxgal)
And it didn't launch until 1981. 1969 was the lunar landing, in a craft that looked NOTHING like the shuttle.
Taking that picture in 1969 would have been impossible because the shuttle had not yet been built.
Somebody at Gap or the ad agency just made a big boo boo. Probably a 25 year old.
I don't think it was a mistake
The first space shuttle didn't launch until 1981, but the idea for it was taken from a plan written in 1969. It was this idea that launched the new generation of space travel.
I suspect the PR folks who created this ad knew exactly what they were doing. It sure got a lot of folks talking about it.
According to this article,
According to this article, the space shuttle design/idea could go back to the 1930s.
Yeah, it's about time we
Yeah, it's about time we started celebrating initial plans instead of the actual events. Who can forget that NASA began its shuttle program in 1969? The ad should be enclosed in a thought bubble. And never mind that NASA ended this shuttle program a few years ago. This ad is pure genius.
Model
Another discrepancy is there weren't many mixed race teenagers in 1969.
