UT is planning to tear down the Carolyn P. Brown Student Center and spend $70 million building a new one.

Because they need more meeting space?? Now what is that big building a few blocks to the east? 70 million will pay for a lot of trolley service. And maybe help with some debt service as well.

How about some co-operation, folks?

not big enough?

I've attended (and spoken at) several events in the UC. The only thing I've ever seen filled beyond capacity is the bookstore and the parking garage.

UC

I enjoy the atmosphere at the UC and like the building. Some events there, like the time Ralph Nader spoke and some others, had to use more than one spill-over room. But, with the newly remodeled alumni auditorium there is plenty of room. I don't think they need to tear down the UC. Its bad enough what they did to the old houses on Melrose and then decided to build the sorority village some place else.

I don't know if this is a good idea or not. I do feel that UT is not managing their properties well and not making well-planned decisions. This has been going on for a while.

I'm waiting for them to propose tearing down the conference center in what was the old Miller's Building on Henley. I think it is a wonderful building but when you get close you can see it is not very well maintained. I really like the big dumpster on the back side.

What is important to UT? Not faculty, not students, not infrastructure... Oh, yeah. FOOTBALL!!!

Football

The article mentioned the center as a gathering place for football fans. We're spending $70M so they'll have a place for tailgate parties when it rains.

Elimination of land at land-grant institution

The way it is described, it sounds like they are going to eliminate all the green space in that entire block. The plan is to first tear down "several older buildings" (historic = expendable when it comes to buildings and trees at UT), including Aconda Court and Temple Court and build Phase I there, THEN tear down the UC and build Phase II. (See the News-Slantenal article here.) Pretty soon the entire campus is going to be hardscaped into a suburban heat island.

As far as the excuse of "lack of adequate meeting space" goes, like, isn't that what the UT Conference Center is used for? Oh yeah, I forgot - its status as being "historically insignificant" puts it at the top of the list of potential buildings to demolish, as well.

I couldn't figure out how they thought they could get away with this. But if you read between the lines, I predict there is a major private funder who is linking the "need" for a new building with providing an exclusive place for football fans - the official reason earnestly put forth as creating "meeting space for students" is so laughable. Funny how these things get announced under the radar in the summer months.

Heresy.

"If someone blindfolded you and dropped you off here, you'd think you were at a state insane asylum."

Pretty funny.

Okay, let's name state universities that would make you think "you were at a state insane asylum".

Also, I drove by Pellissippi State Campus in Blount County around 3PM last Friday. I believe it was closed! I did not see any cars. Not used much I suppose?
