What: Meet Eddie Smith with Lamar Alexander!
When: Thursday, October 16, 2014 - 12:00pm
Where: Shoney's Restaurant, 2612 Chapman Hwy, South Knoxville

Must RSVP to VoteEddieSmith@gmail.com

Meet Gloria Johnson's opponent and try to ask questions! Suggestions are 1) How is Obamacare hurting constituents?, 2) How does he plan to "support AFP's efforts to Stop Obamacare and Washington DC's takeover of health care in Tennessee?", which is his stated pledge.

(Also might ask about things like evolution, climate change, etc.)

Sorry for the short notice, but this flyer was found in my mailbox today and I can't make the event.

Gotta RSVP to go to Shoney's?

Gotta RSVP to go to Shoney's? Hah.

Anyway, we won't be able to make it, but hopefully someone will show up and ask these questions.

They must really be desperate to bring out Lamar.

Seems to indicate they

Seems to indicate they realize Gloria has been a good legislator and a strong presence and is likely to further develop. Re-electing her seems obvious to me. She has done a good job.

This is a really close race

This is a really close race because of all the money being poured in by the school voucher lobby and the Koch brothers organizations. They have gone really negative with numerous mailers and apparently television advertising although I have not seen it.

The Republicans are coming out in full force to take that seat away from the Democrats. Hence Haslam and Alexander now stumping for Smith.

Every vote is needed or campaign contribution if you are not in the district.

Meeting

I arrived around 12 and it seemed they had been meeting and greeting for quite some time. Even though I RSVP'ed - no ID was required - I did clean up before I went. Soon after a preacher prayed to the effect that we should look into our hearts and do the right thing. So much for the concept of the separation of church and state. He said we needed to get rid of the liberals in Knoxville (?!).

Short speech by Alexander. Question: Minimum wage - Answer: Small businesses, creating jobs , etc. 80% of the minimum wage earners are in households above the poverty line (?!) What does this say about the poverty line.

I got a chance to ask about Obamacare. Relayed my experience with a $4800 ER bill that had been negotiated by Blue Cross to $790 thanks to Obamacare. Talked about being locked into private insurance getting close to $800 a month and now Obamacare was around $400. Alexander countered that health care was too expensive, he wanted us to have more choices, buy insurance across state lines. He talked about an accountant who was paying $50/month for cover TN, though he admitted that was minimal insurance. I countered that I had about 45 plans to choose from under the exchange. Alexander asked if I had employees - No, so you can't use those protections to dodge the issue.

Another question about the political climate. Alexander blamed the gridlock on Harry Reid. Eddie Smith was asked about voter ID, which he favors.

Dr. Kim of the Free Health clinic came in and asked about insurance issues. Said only 6 of his patients had signed up for Obamacare, because they couldn't afford $400/mo. Sounds like his office needs to be informed about subsidies, though I suspect many patients fall through the Medicaid gap.

I got to speak to Alexander after the meeting and said I think Dr Kim was asking about expanding Medicaid. Alexander said he was pressuring the HHS secretary to allow Haslam to adopt a "Tennessee plan". I said I'd read about the Arkansas plan and could see it had merits, Alexander spoke well of an Indiana plan being promoted by a conservative governor. No one mentioned that Ramslam appeared to be dragging their feet on putting forth any sort of Medicaid expansion plan.

Mark Harmon's picture

A Corporate Favor is Not a Plan

The Buy-Across-State-Lines gambit is a corporate favor that doubles as a GOP dodge. Any company that wants to now can sell health insurance in Tennessee, but it has to abide by Tennessee's laws. Alexander's bogus idea is to let companies sell whatever crappy insurance they want as long as it meets the regulations (or lack therof) of any state. Thus, the states get into a race to the bottom in their laws to attract the favor of the corporate headquarters.

Thanks for the report. And

Thanks for the report. And for asking tough questions.

BrianHornbackdotCom's picture

I am the one that asked about

the political climate. Actually, my question was about how has the political climate changed from when he was first elected Governor and now that he is beginning his third term in the Senate. It was a typically great Knox County Republican event. I will post pictures and a story on BrianHornback.Com

Factchecker's picture

And what a venue!

Typically great, I have no doubt about that.

B Harmon's picture

fist bump

"..typically great..." I think that means that he got his photo standing with Alexander and one with Eddie to post on his site. He probably he has them enlarged and framed in his home.

Factchecker's picture

I bet getting a photo with

I bet getting a photo with Stan Brock is on his bucket list. If Corker's in the shot too, that would be even better than "great"!

Brian Hornback's picture

Stan who? I was GOP Chairman

Stan who? I was GOP Chairman when Corker kicked Harold Ford, Jr.'s butt. Plenty of pics already in the file.

Bbeanster's picture

Yes. You are much more

Yes. You are much more important than Stan Brock. And so are Ruthie Kuhlman, R. Larry Smith, Gerald Turner and Irene McCreary, to name a few other Knox County GOP chairs. And Corker doubtless owes his victory to you.

Factchecker's picture

But wasn't Corker proud to

But wasn't Corker proud to "pal around" with Stan Brock? If you could have been in that shot with the two of them, then some of the credit for Brock's work would surely have shown on you for electing his great ally, your man Corker, no?

Brian Hornback's picture

It is interesting to see

It is interesting to see Bean, Factchecker and others high jacking threads and making them all about BrianHornback, I appreciate it, I guess. Bean don't forget your pal Billy Stokes, as a former GOP Chair. The guy that got like 24% of the vote against Jamie Woodson (Woodson who I supported and will support again if she runs for anything) and who also lost to Kristy Davis. Of course Davis and their other opponent Ráy H Jenkins were advertisers. Jenkins has gone on to be a County Magistrate. So, advertising on BRIANHORNBACK.com does work in some cases.

Factchecker's picture

Happy to throw business your way

Does Randy charge you for these ads?

Brian Hornback's picture

I didn't realize that

I didn't realize that comments are ads, but Randy can write them off as in kind contributions from me to KnoxViews and if any money has to exchange hands, he knows Factchecker is good for it

Corker won by playing the race card

Corker won by playing the race card against Harold Ford. Pictured Ford with a blond bombshell on his flyers. Watch out - the darkie's comin' to get your women. It was disgusting.

Brian Hornback's picture

Corker did NOT do that, it

Corker did NOT do that, it was a independent expenditure campaign and if I recall correctly, Corker condemned it and asked that they pull the commercial and mail and they wouldn't.

I don't remember

I don't remember that Corker condemned it.

Yeah, or at least his spokesperson did. Of course, that was after the damage had been done. And the RNC paid for the ad.

Factchecker's picture

Yes, excellent report!

And you asked great questions! I half wanted to go, but knew that I'd boil blood and probably not come off so well. Fortunately, I would not seriously consider taking off work for the gamble, but it sounds like you made as much of it as could be hoped. They might have a little bit harder time sleeping tonight, and their dog and pony show was not quite as pristine as they'd hoped.

It might be especially worth it to think that some of your exchange resonated with a few voters who just wanted logical information. Thank you.

State lines

Yes, I realize the state line ploy is a race to the bottom.

Here's a link to an article about the Indiana plan:

(link...)

Sounds like it's better than nothing but puts forth some hurdles. Does it affect current Medicaid patients?

What I liked about the Arkansas plan is it establishes state health clinics to serve the rural areas. Is that too much like nationalized medicine?

Bbeanster's picture

Great work, great report,

Great work, great report, Goose!

Bbeanster's picture

Checked his site.I see that

Checked his site.
I see that Jamie Rowe is getting the treatment reserved for those who turn down his pitch to buy ads.
Good move to get on the Sanger gravy train, although it probably won't help the winning percentage. Tommy Schumpert did a robocall for her yesterday. So much for her pristine Republican credentials.

Eddie Smith is starting to look like Hornback. Life is good on the campaign trail, evidently. I'm curious about what he does for a living. Being a freelance arranger of church music must pay better than you'd think, and "proven leadership," I guess, comes from having led a singing Christmas tree.

Factchecker's picture

I've seen where he's employed

I've seen where he's employed by the megachurch that likes to display fake abortion graves and also an entrepreneur or some such, without any further details. No doubt he wants us to think he "started his own business" and is a "job creator." The shame on Republican politicians who can't say that.

Bbeanster's picture

No, it came out in the

No, it came out in the primary that he is no longer employed by Sevier Heights Baptist Church directing the living Christmas tree. His primary opponent, Jason Emert, said he was fired. He and the head preacher there denied that. Seems odd that a married guy with young children would quit a job without having something else lined up.

And I don't know why his literature would say he still works there if he doesn't.

Factchecker's picture

Well, that's a little

Well, that's a little eye-opening in and of itself. I haven't saved my flyers (heh!), but I thought I remember reading somewhere that he was employed there.

What again is his real job?

Bbeanster's picture

What again is his real

What again is his real job?

Somebody needs to ask him.

Is there a big demand for born leaders of singing Christmas trees?

Nope just the facts, her

Nope just the facts, her voting record and her 2013/2014 financial contributions speak for themselves. Rowe said she was a Republican to a question by Rick Ross, she lied

Dave Prince's picture

I knew an Eddie Smith once

I knew an Eddie Smith once that would be about this guy's age. Went to Giffen Elementary for a couple of years right before it was consolidated into Dogwood. Short dark hair, glasses, just like this guy. Unremarkable student. I remember him bragging to a room full of uninterested 10-year-olds that his family knew John J. Duncan, Jr.

I think the Smith late of Shoney's claims Alice Bell for his K-5, but it's not like many people remember Giffen. (Coincidentally, Charlotte Dorsey was the principal there right at the end. Paid for me to go to the 5th grade Safety Patrol trip to DC when my family could not. Not an endorsement, just a memory.) Might be this guy, might not be. I just think the coincidences there are interesting.

Bbeanster's picture

Charlotte Dorsey seems like a

Charlotte Dorsey seems like a throughly nice, and very bright person. I hear she's a very accomplished painter, as well.

Brian Hornback's picture

There's no difference in ads

There's no difference in ads in the Slopper News, Ftn City Focus or BRIANHORNBACK.COM if what Betty continues to suggest is that candidates that get favorable press for advertising is more an indictment of her thoughts and motives, not mine. In the primary, many candidates opposing one another advertised with me. Green and Price, Pridemore and Fansler, Ailor and Wimberly, it seems Metro Pulse and Shopper doesn't draw both sides like my website does.

Factchecker's picture

Thumbs up

You bet!
