Blatantly. Very, very weird. Almost as weird as Harold Ford praising McCain's cheesy speech backdrop as "the color of the future."
Is this mocking contempt? A serious attempt to remake the dottering old fool image? A desperate cry for attention? All of the above?
Speaking of obscure artitistic intent, It took much Googling to track down the template for this Steve Bell Guardian cartoon, a Gustave Doré engraving from the Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
The Coleridge text:
The shipmates, in their sore distress, would fain throw the whole guilt on the ancient Mariner: in sign whereof they hang the dead sea-bird round his neck.
Ah! Well a-day! What evil looks
Had I from old and young!
Instead of the cross, the Albatross
About my neck was hung.

The definition of mockery
It's a lack of vision, originality, and--especially--scruples (or class). The GOP has got nothing, so they try and confuse people into transposing candidate themes. They'll probably claim that McCain's campaign was first with theirs.
This is consistent with Bush's campaigns that similarly reacted to those of his opponents. Remember "The Reformer with Results" and "The Compassionate Conservative"? Good if the goal was to be almost perfectly 180 degrees opposite from the claims.

Maybe both graphic artists
Maybe both graphic artists only had red, white, and blue to choose from. I personally think McCain's looks better, design wise.
It aint the only color in their palette
What a letdown
I thought Clint had changed his hue. Sad. Maybe it's just a former hero geezer thing.
