On the way in to Sequoya Hills we were wondering how many Ford Signs we'd see. A Shitload, as it turns out.

It was a very nice house, quite large with a fancy pool with fountains and two spas. It was obviously designed for entertaining large crowds but not this large. I've been to a lot of political events but Ford events have a level of excitement to them that is unprecedented.

Lincoln Davis spoke and introduced Phil Bredesen. Tennessee loves Bredesen and he wears it graciously. A friend of mine sat at Phil's kitchen table when he worked with folks to create the Land trust for Tennessee. She has always said her biggest problem at Nashville mayoral events was to help Phil look like he had charisma. Well, "confidence" and "competence" are fine substitutes and are ultimately better. She needs to quit worrying about Phil...He's got all he needs.

There were too many people to fit in the room, and it was a very large room. When Phill introduced Harold Ford Jr the crush reached the point that Ford's people parted the crowd and marched all of us who were looking in the windows from the poolside bar right past Phil and Harold, shaking hands as we passed, and up to the balcony so we could all hear what Harold said.

He was funny...he was rousing...He spoke of things that opened up our tent to Republicans, and there were several in the room. WE shook their hands.

Harold didn't seem to want any applause but he got it anyway...over and over.

I recognized some big name local Democrats and figured out who a few more folks were who had never voted for a democrat before until now. Some of us talked about things we didn't know we had in common. "My mother thinks Harold is too conservative"..."The league of Conservation voters says Harold consistantly scores high among Tennessee elected officials"..."He's conservative"..."The Sierra Club endorsed Harold"..."Where can I go canoeing?"

I saw an attorney friend who I knew was a Republican and he just smiled and hugged me. It was a diverse crowd in more ways than one...But a united crowd in the only way that matters. We care about our state.

Peace,

Steve

Bredesen and Ford

Yes, Ford and Bredesen gave a wonderful talk on politics and the future. Bredesen said he gave his first political contribution in many years today and he gave it to HFJ. Bredesen says he usually stays out of races, but felt this was too important to pass. Congressman Lincoln Davis is the unsung hero of this race. He is working very hard to introduce HFJ to East Tennessee voters.

The overflow crowd of over 300 people was a great cross-section of the community.

As the only Southern Democratic Governor, Bredesen will be on many short list for VP candidate in 2008. With sky high approvals, some would urge him to run for Pres.

HFJ always appears as a stateman. He gave several compliments to Sen. Howard Baker and Tennessee's long history of moderate Senators. He welcomed Republicans. He spoke about putting "hope over fear" and that the RNC ads are not just "promoting fear, but driven by fear."

Now is time to help the campaign . . . make a donation (of any size) online, volunteer to canvass or phonebank. Wear HFJ buttons/sticker and talk to folk every day (grocery store, mall, friends).

George W. Bush...A failure

George W. Bush...

A failure in his own right, but let's look at his family.

Neil Bush -- Primary player in Silverado S&L scandal.

via Wikipedia:

The US Office of Thrift Supervision investigated the failure of Silverado and determined that Bush had engaged in numerous "breaches of his fiduciary duties involving multiple conflicts of interest." Although Bush was not indicted on criminal charges, a civil action was brought against him and the other Silverado directors by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation; it was eventually settled out of court, with Bush paying $50,000 as part of the settlement.

Not to mention his role in sex romps with Thai prostitutes and shady high dollar dealings with the Chinese.

Noelle Bush -- Xanax addict and daughter of Jeb Bush. George W. Bush's neice.

According to The Smoking Gun,

Noelle Bush, the 24-year-old daughter of Florida Governor Jeb Bush, was arrested today (January 29) and charged with trying to fill a false prescription at a Tallahassee pharmacy. With Uncle George preparing to deliver his first State of the Union address tonight, Noelle got nabbed trying to illegally score a Xanax 'scrip at a Walgreens. She was charged with fraudulently obtaining a controlled substance and released pending a court appearance. Here's her mug shot and the police incident report.

Jenna Bush -- daughter of George W. and Laura Bush. Pleaded no contest to possession of fake ID, underage drinking, and had to do community service and pay fines related to these charges.

Laura Bush -- Vehicular manslaughter of her ex-boyfriend.

You sure you wanna go down this road, Coach?

I also forgot...

Grandfather, Sen. Prescott Bush, business partner with war criminals.

George Bush's grandfather, the late US senator Prescott Bush, was a director and shareholder of companies that profited from their involvement with the financial backers of Nazi Germany.

The Guardian has obtained confirmation from newly discovered files in the US National Archives that a firm of which Prescott Bush was a director was involved with the financial architects of Nazism.

His business dealings, which continued until his company's assets were seized in 1942 under the Trading with the Enemy Act, has led more than 60 years later to a civil action for damages being brought in Germany against the Bush family by two former slave labourers at Auschwitz and to a hum of pre-election controversy.

Then there's Daddy

Hm. Looks like not only was he present and voting at the meeting where dear ol' Ron decided to deal with terrorist states in order to illegally fund Nicaraguan rebels, but he owned a home in one state and claimed residency in another in order to run for office. He also lied about dealing with Noriega and claimed he wouldn't raise taxes.

Here's a few tidbits, but there's a bunch about this on Google:

Also, George Herbert Walker

Dubya's other great-grandfather, George Herbert Walker, another Yankee financier for the Third Reich:

George Walker also set up the takeover of the Hamburg-America line, a cover for I.G. Farben's Nazi espionage unit in the United States. In Germany, I.G. Farben was most famous for putting the gas in gas chambers; it was the producer of Zyklon B and other gasses used on victims of the Holocaust.

The Bush family was not unaware of the nature of their investment partners. They hired Allen Dulles, the future head of the CIA, to hide the funds they were making from Nazi investments and the funds they were sending to Nazi Germany, rather than divest. It was only in 1942, when the government seized Union Banking Company assets under the Trading With The Enemy Act, that George Herbert Walker and Prescott Bush stopped pumping money into Hitler's regime.

(Go ahead, metulj. Invoke Godwin's Law now. Just remember it was a GOP supporter who opened the door and insisted that we HAD TO TAKE THE FAMILY INTO ACCOUNT when voting.)

(a) Dubya can still be impeached. Let's drag his family into it.

(b) Jeb! is still eligible to run. So we might still need all of this.

Coach, you need to check the

Coach, you need to check the site rules. You are in violation of the "no trolling" rule.

This comment of yours is off topic. Steve had a great report on an event he attended. KBarry followed up with another great comment on the event which he, too, apparently attended.

Then you come along and post a completely off-topic comment, slandering the subject of the original post. This in turn prompted a spirited response in defense of the innocent victim of your sleazy attack that veered the thread even further off topic. This is the definition of trolling, if you weren't aware.

Your very first post on this blog was somewhat reasonable, and led to some interesting discussion. Then you had to inject Clinton and blowjobs. You are not only disruptive, you are crude.

You, sir, have no sense of decency. You are misinformed on a wide range of issues, and add little to the conversation that is worthwhile or of interest to visitors at this site.

You are not representing your cause in a very positive light. They would probably prefer that you not "help" them. I suggest that you look at some of Les Jones or Say Uncle or Chad Tindell's posts to get an idea of how to better make your "conservative" case without being such an unpleasant buffoon. Even Brian Hornback shows more class. And better spelling and grammar, too.

This is your second warning.

Sequoyah Hills

WhitesCreek,

Geez, wish I would have known about the event. I would have come over and welcomed Junior and you to my neighborhood. It's not as Republican as the stereotypes would have it. Both Gore and Kerry were within single digits of carrying the 24th ward. There are a lot of Ford signs on Cherokee, which is giving Repubs some heartburn.

(This is a letter from a

(This is a letter from a friend who attended the same event that Steve did last night. She was inspired to get up early and fire off this email)

Dear Friends:

I’m writing to you about because I’m extremely passionate about the need for change. I hope you’ll feel free to share some of my thoughts with your friends and family and neighbors.

Thursday I had a unique opportunity to see both Tennessee senatorial candidates speak at two separate times to the same small group of women. Bob Corker had some good ideas, though they did not appear to be studied or original. When I left the room after Harold Ford, Jr.’s talk, I knew that I had been in the presence of greatness. At the end of the day, there was only one way to sum things up. In this race, one candidate is great, the other good. One is inspiring, the other ordinary. One is clearly a leader. The other, whose message was peppered with phrases that have grown far too familiar over the past six years, could only be described as a follower.

Last week, a friend of mine said he was skeptical about charismatic political figures. Well, there’s no doubt, Harold Ford, Jr. is charismatic. Bob Corker isn’t. But I’m willing to take my chances on charismatic. We’ve had uninspired leadership for too long now and today we have an opportunity to do something about it.

Tennessee appears to be the eye of a huge political storm. The forces of fate have placed you and me where the battle for the balance of power will be decided. We’re caught up in a moment of history where, as voters, we alone have the power to reverse the reckless course we’ve been on for the past six years. Or, we can let it continue out of control carrying all of us, Democrats and Republicans alike, to a place where none of us want to go. A place where children may grow up like many of us did, facing the possibility of military draft to fight an unpopular, unnecessary war. A place where the gulf between rich and poor continues to grow at an alarming rate. A place where half of our citizens don’t have access to decent healthcare. A place where our government continues to grow ever larger and only a fortunate few of us seem to realize any benefit. A place where the liberties our fathers and grandfathers fought to preserve are being taken from us. A place where we all breathe polluted air because our leaders don’t have the guts to do what it takes to make it clean again. A place where the money and power of the oil industry and those who control it are more important than the safety of our citizens. The list is long and you all know it too well. Let’s not go there!

I had the opportunity to listen to Harold Ford, Jr. again last night. I sincerely believed him when he promised to do everything in his power to reverse the course we’re on. He is young and he is hopeful. He is positive and purposeful, not ready to point the finger of blame, but eager to start finding bipartisan solutions to problems that must be solved now. In so many ways, I believe he is wise beyond his years, the result of living in a world where people like him weren’t always given the same opportunities afforded others. Last night, I experienced the same feelings I had the first time I heard him speak. I felt hopeful.

Right now, we Tennesseans are potentially the most powerful people in the world. The whole world is looking at us, wondering if we’ve got the guts to do what it takes to change the course of history. This election is important. Your vote is important. If you elect Harold Ford, Jr., the whole world is going to breathe a sigh of relief because this shift in power will be what it takes to put America back where she belongs---the centerpiece of hope for the rest of the world.

Please go out and vote today with an open mind and with the courage and conviction it takes to change the world. The choice is yours and the stakes have never been higher.

Yours in hope,

(Name redacted because I haven't asked her about putting it on an open Web site)
