The Orlando Sentinel requests Obama to join Clinton in recognizing Florida voters.

Democratic National Chairman Howard Dean has said the party's nominee could decide to seat Florida's delegates at the convention. But if no candidate has enough delegates to claim the nomination at that point, party officials would make the call, setting the stage for a bitter battle at the convention.
...
Mr. Obama, to his credit, has called for a more inclusive, less divisive style of politics. A promise to seat all delegates would demonstrate his sincere commitment to that approach.

The voters of Florida and Michigan should be recognized.

In Florida, more than 1.6 million Democrats cast ballots on Jan. 29 for their party's presidential candidates -- nearly a million more than in the 2004 primary. It's almost inconceivable that they would be disenfranchised after what happened here in the 2000 election.

The game of politics is a bitter contest. Is it necessary to handicap millions of voters to win?

I see where the DNC is now telling Fla. and Michigan party members they should have caucuses to have their votes count in the convention. I know that as I have gotten older I have gotten much more contrary but my first impulse when I read this was _-_-_- you DNC, I voted already and if you want to diss me now do not call in November. But what do I know.

Recognizing the delegates

Recognizing the delegates after the fact would be a massive break with good faith on the part of the Clintons. None of the other candidates campaigned in those states because they agreed to follow the rules. I understand the problems with Florida but that doesn't matter.

Are the Clintons willing to win the nomination by an act of bad faith?

Is that how they want to "Change" things?

Set up caucuses and let everyone campaign on a level field. It would be a travesty and justify what the Republicans say about the Clintons if the delegates were seated as it now stands.

I dont see how its fair to

I dont see how its fair to allow the FL delegates to count toward Hillary when Obamas name wasnt even on the ballot (correct me if I'm wrong, but he wasnt on the MI ballot either was he?).

In Florida all Democratic

In Florida all Democratic Presidential candidates were on the ballot.

Re-vote or don't seat

Seating the MI and FL delegates under the conditions of actual campaigning would amount to fraud. Either re-vote them - hold another primary or caucus - or don't count them. Anything else would be a disaster.

democratic rules

The DNC set the rules for electing delegates. The rules plainly said if a state held a primary before Ia.,Nev,NH or SC. they would not be seated @ the convention.Mich & Fla did not follow those rules.

The court ruled that the party not the state legislature(who set the dates in Fla & Mich) set the rules for conducting how a nominee will be selected.Remember,in Tn,the county executive committees of both parties have the right to hold a convention & not a primary to select county nominees.

The power lies in the party for selection of nominees.

We will begin the process of selecting delegates @ the Knox County delegate convention Sat.& then the 2nd congressional district convention the next Sat.will elect convention delegates.

The party rules will set the number of delegates won per the popular vote in the 2nd district.

What happens if we decided we dont agree with the rules & Al Gore should get all the delegates? Should those delegates be seated?

How far does one go in ignoring party rules?

If Mich & Fla are allowed to be seated with no debate does that mean Tn can hold its '12 primary...next week..next year??

This debate needs to go to floor of convention & the convention needs to take some time in hammering out a method for nomination that ends leapfrogging & frontloading.

Google the '72 democratic convention...the rules fight over Cal will give you a guide on what will happen if Clinton & Obama are still in a fight come convention

Agree

Bill,
I totally agree! If the MI and FL Democratic voters are upset they should get upset at their State Party Officials. For HRC to go after the FL & MI "delegates" now is just craven desperation. She's low on money, her momentum may have peaked too soon and Obama might, might just have the edge come convention time BUT if she can get those invalid "delegates" well ... wouldn't that be nice.
Who would be screaming if the roles were reversed and Obama was slipping and she was rock'n?
I think the State Party leadership of FL and MI should have a primary/cacuas whatever, after all the others are done. Play by the rules or go last. In this case it might be the tie-breaker going into the convention.

Take Care, Be Good and don't play in the street!

This is a screwed up

This is a screwed up situation. It's my understanding that the state legislators moved up the primaries. But it was the DNC that imposed the death penalty. Seems like the DNC had the discretion here, but I understand their reasoning behind the progression of the primaries. And if they start making exceptions to rules, as Bill Young noted where does that lead? Dean worries about the nomination dragging out too long, but this is clearly contributing to the problem.

Clinton makes a somewhat reasonable argument for Florida, i.e. all the candidates were still on the ballot and none campaigned there, so it was sort of a fair fight, and she's advocating for Florida voters to have their voices heard. Her case in Michigan isn't as strong, because other candidates were not on the ballot. But if Obama had won Florida, would she still be fighting for them to have their votes count? Probably not.

The DNC needs to get this straightened out pronto.

For crying out loud.

For crying out loud. Whomever won these two states would be clamoring to have the delegates restored. Several of y'all are just piling on because it fits this "Slick Willie" profile set up by the Republicans eons ago.

Personally, I think HRC can clinch this without MI and FL, and that she ought to put her energy towards something else. For the record, I haven't seen any new movement on this, just some press calls on Howard Dean to do something about it.

I strongly suspect that y'all would be whining over "cheating" by Hillary if she were trying to stop Obama from seating these delegates, were the high-heeled pump on the other foot. I can hear it now...all your comments would be full of righteousness on the cause of enfranchising the folks who've been screwed by election shenanigans over the last few election cycles [read: hanging chads in 2000, long lines and disappearing votes in 2004], but the way things stand now, you're fine with allowing whomever wants to deny them the right to participate.

I could tolerate it, were it not for the nauseating hypocrisy being displayed regularly by a few folks here lately.

broken record

I've been posting on this for a while now & I know I'm sounding like a broken record.

When Fla & Mich first started talking about moving the primary dates up the DNC said,in no uncertain terms, they would not be seated.

Ive also posted that we could have a delegate donnybrook feb 6th.

However the conventional wisdom, last yr,was it would be over feb 5th.

Fla & Mich decided..well if feb 5th is the end all..lets dont be one of a bunch states & go it alone.Everybody says we will know who the nominee is feb 5th & that nominee will control the convention floor & seat both Mich & Fla.

No harm..no foul.

BUT now we got us a delegate donnybrook.

If you remember I posted that I had called the DNC concerning the total delegates needed to nominate(I also directed them to google the '72 convention..they did)

The 2,025 delegates needed does not count the Fla delegates (210) or the Mich delegates (156).

So add 210+156=366...
divide by 2=183+1=184..

Therefore,if one adds Fla + Mich
the delegates needed to nominate = 2209.

No matter what anybody does if the nomination goes to the convention there will be a floor fight over Fla & Mich.

Hang with me(its why I keep saying read up on '72)

Which challenged delegation goes first & how well a candidate can shift delegates on the floor are huge.

For example,it could be for Obama the Mich challenge going first would be what you want.

Why?

1.seating the 156 Mich delegates would raise majority on the floor by 79 delegates from 2025 to 2104.

2.40% of the Mich delegation is uncommitted.

3.Therefore,Obama could still control the floor with a new majority of 2104 & be able to win the Fla challenge.

On the other hand one could do the same math for Clinton & her forces putting the Fla challenge first.

I could not explain this to the DNC folks BUT after they looked into the '72 convention called me back and oh man I see what you are saying.

Stick Thrower's picture

Edwards 14%?

Bill, Edwards got 14% in Florida--how would his delegates be handled in that floor fight?

bill young's picture

good point

14% does not qualify for state at large delegates

However,if edwards,in any congressional district got 15%..i believe edwards would win 1 delegate.

The plot gets ever thicker

Why we must stop Hillary! Don?t let the Clintons fool you again

As America lies here at a major crossroads, between collapse and ushering in a new era; we have a choice between the corrupt politics of yesterday and welcoming a new future.I feel that this is this is the worst possible time to put the Clintons back in the White House. Hillary as president would be an absolute disaster for America because she is ready and willing to sell the United States of America out to her corporate puppet-masters. She has not been “vetted” in the least as she claims, and we as voters need to start the vetting process because there are some major skeletons in the Clinton closet. Read on to learn who and what are behind the Hillary curtain.

To begin, lets identify the Clinton façade before we expose the true Hillary. Mrs.Clinton is portraying herself as someone who will fight for everyday middle class American workers and women against the economic pressures they face. She touts her “experience” with flair. Unfortunately, the very experience she flaunts runs contrary to ideals that would benefit the Americans she is pandering herself to.

Lets look into the most prominent example of Hillary becoming a corporate puppet for hire. From 1986 to 1992 an unqualified Hillary sat as an executive on the board of a very large Arkansas company for millions of dollars. In turn, while her husband was governor of Arkansas, he gave said company special treatment as governor. Not only is this blatant nepotism bad enough, but this very company has also become notorious for its long-standing anti-female, anti-worker culture that has resulted in paying out millions of dollars in recent years to settle lawsuits. Hillary sat on the board of this company and promoted this corporations backward culture, because she was paid enough to throw her alleged principles to the wind. When Hillary’s husband won the presidency, she resigned from the board of directors and immediately used Bill’s position to secure trade deals with China that enabled her former employer to expand across the country, shutting down small businesses and leaching off communities. If you haven’t figured it out by now, the company in question is Wal-mart. She has said “I’m always proud of Wal-Mart and what we do and the way we do it is better than anybody else” To this day she has not had to answer ANY questions by the mainstream media about her role in shaping and doling handouts to one of the most predatory companies in America.

What we can expect from another Clinton white house? More of the same pandering to special interests, and use of political dirty tricks in their all-consuming quest for power and money. We can see her Wal-Mart character manifested again by the fact that this time around pharmaceutical companies have enthusiastically reached into their pockets and funded the Clinton campaign. Her “health care mandate” would force everyone in America to pay the pharmaceutical companies for overpriced medicine whether they want to or not. The Clintons and their corporate friends will decide what is affordable for you and what is not. As far as political dirty tricks, famous corporate neo-con Rupert Murdoch of FOX news has held fund raisers for her campaign, and helped her smear Senator Obama with disgusting, racist lies. These heartless lies, spread over email, have been traced back directly to her campaign.

Hillary is a corporate mole running for office in the same vein as Dick Cheney, only Hillary happens to claim the Democratic party. Don’t be fooled by the difference in parties, a vote for Hillary is a vote for the same kind of corporate special interests that hired Dick Cheney and Haliburton to rob our beloved country blind. Speaking of Haliburton, the ties between the Clintons and the Bushes beloved neo-con allies run deep. It was Dick Cheney himself who secured Haliburton contracts with Bill Clinton, and in subsequent years Hillary worked with Haliburton and Dick Cheney to authorize the disastrous invasion of Iraq. Now she wants to clear the way for invasion of Iran, by voting to give Bush authority to take unilateral action against the Iranian military. No matter what she says at the stump, her actions speak louder than words. She is a Republican wolf hidden behind a Democratic façade.

The actions of the Clintons and the Bushes have divided and hurt our country. It is time to move beyond the corrupt, lying politicians of old, and vote only for a candidate that brings fresh, positive, transformative change; whether that candidate is Congressman Ron Paul or Senator Barack Obama. With our huge deficits and struggling masses, America can not afford to vote more corporate raiders like the Clintons, Bushes, and Cheneys into the highest office of the land. It is time to move forward and leave the lying, scandalous, divisive politicians of the 20th century behind us. Please forward this urgent message to everyone you know, so together we can get the truth out about Clintons and send them a message that we will not take any more.

I wouldn't.

Also, I think there should be a new election or caucus in both states.

Also also, I think Hillary would win both of them, and thereby get the nomination. But that's the breaks in a democracy.

Will you shut up now? Thx.

I AM a Florida Voter and....

...I voted out of protest, as did many MANY others.

My vote went to Obama. I, along with every other D voter, voted under the auspices that our votes would not impact the zero Democrat delegate count coming from FL.

Candidates were not supposed to campaign in FL --and they did. Specifically, the Clinton campaign did. This went against the rules set for by the DNC.

Now, the same rule-breaker is asking to seat the delegates? Fine seat them. It'd be fun to see.

After seating the delegates, the DNC should strip Hillary of the Delegates she won for breaking the rules.

Notes from FL on the Obama and Clinton campaigns.

We missed you in the fort super tuesday.

But ole just johnny is saying there be fight in the Fla delegation over who is a delegate.

Now we are talking about a floor fight over every pea pickin delegate.('72 Ill challenge that threw Daley out & put Jesse in)

Let me make THIS clear...the convention is the arbitrator of all rules challenges & the decision is final.
