After sitting through four hours of the City Council meeting tonight (the selection of District 1 council rep), I decided to watch the remainder of it at home on CTV stream. The image is almost unviewable and the audio unintelligible. This is how CTV explains it:

We apologize for any technical difficulties we may experience from time to time with our Live Stream and Facebook Live when online viewer demand is high. We appreciate your patience.

Technology surely exists for quality streaming. Why isn't the city using it?

Update

Quality suddenly improved.

I'm watching too. Must have

I'm watching too. Must have been a camera issue or feed from one camera. The long view is interesting but can't see applicants' face.

Funny thing

Watching Tommy Smith and wondering if six women will select the young, white male who would have been the top pick of 200 years of previous councils. Maybe, but not on first ballot.

Ashley Capps' endorsement

Ashley Capps' endorsement surely helped. Wondering if the shopping hub will now move from Chapman Highway to Sevier Avenue.

agree

Smith just looked and sounded well-grounded. Ashley Capps didn't hurt him. Why do we get better candidates for appointments than elections?

hmm

must have been the haircut

Yup

A young white guy. Yeah. (not)

Smith wins on 4th ballot

Tommy Smith wins with seven votes and one (Parker) abstention.

If you really want to be entertained

If you really want to be entertained while watching CTV, turn on closed captioning. There’s little correlation between what’s being said and what the captions read. The captions are pretty amusing and rarely make any sense.

I was impressed with the talent of the people who put themselves forward for the seat and with the careful vetting City Council put them through.

it was an interesting

it was an interesting evening. the pizza was appreciated.

Yes, the pizza is a nice gesture

It’s a nice gesture for those who show up and a nod toward democracy as a participatory sport. One reason why I love participating in local government so much. It’s the ability to get close to the action and have an influence (not the pizza).

I think Madeline started the pizza precedent during some of those marathon Recode meetings and even paid out of her pocket once. Since I was just watching last night, I decided to do it from home.
