The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has launched a complaints database, currently in beta. The database logs consumer complaints about financial services and access is open to the public. No consumer personal info is published, but the bank name, type of complaint and resolution are available in summary form.

It currently has a small data set of complaints for testing and feedback. Initially, it will contain credit card complaints, but the CFPB is proposing to include all consumer financial products and services they cover, including "credit cards, mortgages, student and other consumer loans, and other bank products (such as checking and savings accounts)."

It's a slick user interface, but the data appears somewhat limited in terms of incident details. You can at least get an idea of which banks are the worst offenders and the types of complaints they receive.

More info here, access the database here.

Looking at the limited data set of 137 reports, Capital One had the highest number of complaints (33), followed by Citibank (27), JPMorgan Chase (24), Bank of America (15) and eight others. The most frequent type of complaint involved billing disputes (33) followed by interest rates (19). Other types of issues include rewards, collection, identity theft, etc. Most issues are marked "closed with explanation" (60). 44 were "closed with monetary relief."
