has a billboard-sized Corker sign in its front yard. I did a little driveabout and noticed that several of these fine places are advertising their support for the Republican nominee. These are among the most despicable and predatory industries ever, and if my candidate enjoyed the support of these blood suckers, I'd be doing some serious re-evaluating. Tennessee values, indeed.
I looked around the 'Net a bit, and came across the this bit of commentary:
Last week in Cleveland Alan Jones, the owner of Checks to Cash, one of the largest check cashing ( loan sharking) businesses in the nation, held a huge fund raiser where Bob Corker was the guest of honor. Jone's business makes a lot of money operating near military bases loaning quick cash to US military families at 300% annual interest rates. Wonder what ol' Bob would have done if Nash had asked him if he thought Jones' campaign contribution was dirty???

These Businesses Flourished Under Sundquist Administration
when in fact, they should have had the beejezzus legislated out of them and their rates capped and their locations regulated just as liquor stores are. They prey on those who are down on their luck, out of resources or other lenders and are forced to seek these moneychangers to make ends meet during the tough times of the month.
Sit in the parking lot at any of these viper pits on Kingston Pike and you'll see their clientel is families, with very, very young children, older cars, not junkers, but folks who were not far enough up the food chain to avoid layoff or other RIFs.
They prey on those who are
They prey on those who are down on their luck,
Is that the reason they are posting Corker ads?
meme alert
Worse than newspapers?
One of the announcers on Monday Night Football made some crack about sports journalists trying to get people fired. This is the new meme of the uninformed voter, that newspapers are motivated to destroy people. This is why the too-long-to-repeat list of Bushco's corruption and lies means nothing to these people. They are immune from information.
The relentless, irrational bad-mouthing of newspapers by cable and radio personalities has spawned a cultural myth!

While the Metro Pulse is back on track and much improved, and the Halls Shopper News does a great job, the News Sentinel is AWOL in its journalistic commitment. It seems the mission statement is "don't upset current or potential advertisers". Thank you Mr. Hartman, but if you do run a newspaper with that philosophy you cannot cover the news. For the sake of our community take early retirement and let some young lions come in and fix this once great daily newspaper.
This Poll on KnoxViews reflects a sample of readers and former readers. Currently 86% of people responding to the Poll voted that Jack McElroy has not done a good job as editor of the News Sentinel.
Not only does the Sentinel not cover national news it is just as bad on not covering local news.
Loan Source
Here's one I came across while looking for some info on loan predators near military bases. Soldiers often get in hock so deep to these people that they can't be deployed overseas.

My niece is being deployed
My niece is being deployed against her wishes. She had a baby just a few month's ago. Typical of the Republicans they won't let anyone out of going unless there is money involved. She should have gone to one of the check advanced places and got herself in serious debt, I fear the large debt would be better to face than what she will be facing in Iraq. Taking a mother away from her child. I'm so proud to be an American.
Taking a mother away from
And here we have the President of the United States in a hyperventilating twitter about an out of context remark made by John Kerry.
The President is going on Rush Limbaugh today to tell everyone how much he supports the troops. And how he's a man of values. How he cares for your family and wants to provide comfort and safety.
I'd love to see a picture of that 4-month old child right about now, and tell those sorry sacks of shit that they're ripping apart American families so that they can sustain troop levels in an unwinnable foreign adventure.
Have either of those godawful sons of bitches ever attended the funeral of an active duty soldier? Have they ever watched as an honor guard folds the flag and hands it to the closest surviving relative as a token of this country's gratitude?
If it were me, I'd tell him, "Stuff your gratitude. Give me my son back. Give me my daughter back. Give me back my wife. My husband. My mother. My father. My best friend."
Yeah, my pride is swelling. Right to the breaking point.
Opportunity is the victim in this country. That's the point. We had the opportunity to draw the world together. Wasted it. We had the opportunity to focus on strengthening America by educating our population and securing America from terrorism by refusing to be afraid. That opportunity is continually foregone. Imagine what would have been possible by having the government borrow half a trillion dollars and investing it at HOME, in OUR country, rather than taking it out into the Iraqi countryside by the wheelbarrow and losing it to mercenaries, losers, liars, and thugs as GOP loyalists skim off the top.
Now we stand helplessly by and watch as the GOP hammers every last wedge possible into the political breach, pouring millions of dollars into the effort. They seek to divide us and their only hope is that they keep that paltry 50% +1. And then they'll scream MANDATE!!!
Paraphrasing Hornback, you can have a better America or a bitter America. The GOP choice has been painfully obvious:
The GOP chooses a bitter America.

Thanks, Eleanor. I'll try to keep you posted.
Andy, I see you are aware of the fourth month ordeal, It's still crap that they have to go. Glad I missed the Rush and Bush fiasco. I'm afraid after a minute of listening to the two, My radio would have been bashed into a million pieces.
Didn't I hear recently of
Didn't I hear recently of some legislation that was proposed or passed that would limit interest rates that could be charged to military personnel?
I think it was 30some percent.
Facing South covers this
Facing South covers this issue a lot. This is probably what you are talking about: Senate reins in military predatory lending
Lots more on the topic over there.
The life's blood of the cash
The life's blood of the cash advance industry is government regulation, and Bob Corker is their new best friend.

These are among the most despicable and predatory industries ever, and if my candidate enjoyed the support of these blood suckers, I'd be doing some serious re-evaluating.
Sure, Hfjr voted for the bankruptcy bill, but he voted for it out of principle.
At least he's got a great
At least he's got a great record of trying to make the government balance its books, so it's not total hypocrisy. Though I'll agree that bankruptcy bill was a pile of garbage.
