I had promised previously to share details of the campaign finance disclosures filed 1/29/08 by 6th District commission candidates. A recap of amounts raised this period and balance on hand for each candidate follows.

Anders, Brad (R) – Raised $9.580.00/Balance $4,519.69
Bryant, Kathy (D) – Raised $1,960.00/Balance $911.76
Connatser, Charles (D) – Raised $11,918.35/Balance $1,621.29
Jones, Matthew (R) – Raised $5,165.00/Balance $326.91
McDaniel, Walter (R) –Raised (not indicated)/Balance $3.01
Shelton, Jimmie (R) – Raised -0-/Balance -0-

McDaniel and Shelton did not report any itemized contributions greater than $100.00.

An itemization of the other four candidates’ contributions greater than $100.00, excluding in-kind contributions, follows in four posts. Any such contributions from outside Knox County are flagged.

(Randy, I’ve checked this recap carefully and will stand behind its accuracy and its completeness per the parameters I indicate above--i.e., over $100.00, exclusive of in-kind contributions.)

These guys are BIG developers. not that there's anything wrong with that, but they just are.

Derry Thompson (occupation not indicated), $250.00

Derry Thompson is Tim Graham's partner, or used to be.

Bruce Williams (occupation not indicated), $1,000.00 Bruce is a "retired" developer, swimming pool builder and political godfather to Lumpy Lambert. I imagine his name will show up on Scoobie Moore's disclosures as well as Tramel's and Cate's.

Bryant seems cemented as class of the field.

I am sorry about the occupations not being listed.
I have only been scared of one thing in this campaign
and it has been filing these forms correctly. We are terribly new at this, but Shelly Bell used to work for Deroyal in Human Resources, and I know she is still in Human Resources but I believe it is at a Hospital. I do know who Bruce Williams is but I didn't even think to put that he was the owner of Heritage Pools. As for the others I really don't know any of them, and ony got to talk to Charles Holland on the phone for about 20 mins.

Donation to Jones

I have only met Matthew Jones one time at the Expo Center. I liked what he had to say. I was asked by a group of residents in the 6th district to help his campaign with a donation. He probably does not know my occupation.

Any idea what Andrew Kollenberg does for the City of Knoxville?

The Graham contribution is unappealing

Connatser

Not sure what to make of Calif, DC, Miami, Memphis, Chattanooga pipefitters contributing to a county commissioner campaign in Knoxville

These lists will be interesting. Has Scott Moore's arrived yet?

Tamara Shepherd's picture

Kollenberg/Graham

The disclosure says Kollenberg is a police officer with the city, as is Anders.

I caught Anders' contribution from Graham, too. Disappointing, as Anders was my favorite (R) at the recent Powell High candidate forum.

Tamara Shepherd's picture

Lambert & Jones

I dropped by Lambert's Advantage Auto Sales the other day, to fulfill a promise I'd made to copy Lumpy on the list of community grant apps pending review by the citizen's panel.

I opened the front door and nearly tripped over a three foot-high pile of Matthews Jones' signs. Lumpy hasn't made much of a secret of his favorite, though...

Matthew Jones's picture

I have explained time and

I have explained time and time again that I know
Greg Lambert wants me to get elected. I know why he wants me to get elected, but he also knows that I stand on my own when it comes to doing the job. Please quit trying to make me look bad because people don't like Lambert. If I believe in what I am doing in the race and I am fighting for change, it shouldn't matter. The people that have gotten to know me should know by now that I am no one's puppet.

Connatser/Moore

jbr (re: Connatser): Not sure what to make of Calif, DC, Miami, Memphis, Chattanooga pipefitters contributing to a county commissioner campaign in Knoxville."

Yeah, I agree. Would be better to see some grassroots support, especially within the district.

jbr: "These lists will be interesting. Has Scott Moore's arrived yet?"

Dunno. I picked these up yesterday (Wednesday) morn.

GDrinnen2's picture

Wonder why Jones didn't list

Wonder why Jones didn't list any occupations?

The Williams contribution would seem to indicate the rumors of Jones and Lumpy being close are accurate.

Tamara Shepherd's picture

Jones' disclosure

Drinnen: "Wonder why Jones didn't list any occupations?"

Dunno, Gary. I understand the requirement to disclose contributors' occupations is new this year. Jones' treasurer is Angie Mercer--maybe she's new to the job and didn't realize she needed to track that info?

Drinnen: "The Williams contribution would seem to indicate the rumors of Jones and Lumpy being close are accurate."

I'd hardly call them rumors at this point (see my post above). When Lumpy arrived late at the Powell High forum, he approached me and asked straight away how "his guy" was doing. Also, I saw in Betty's coverage that she stood next to them in the auditorium and heard them discussing campaign strategy pretty openly.

I need to ask who Bruce Williams is. I don't know his name, I don't think?

Williams owns the pool place

Williams owns the pool place out on Emory Road. . . Heritage maybe? His wife Lillian has been very involved (President maybe?) of the Powell B & P. They have heavily supported Hall/Campfield/Lumpy and the like.

I think the law reads that the candidate must make the "best effort" to list the employer and occupation. Maybe they sent in unsolicited donations, so he doesn't know who what they do. Maybe the Lumpster is out picking up donations for him. I just found it odd to see so many unlisted.

Tamara Shepherd's picture

Jones contributors

Thanks, Gary--I DID know that. Yes, it's Heritage Pool and co-owner is Steve Price (or used to be), a fellow Powell High alumnus.

As to possible occupations of Jones' donors, I know Lumpy "counseled" me with regard to my candidate's efforts (that's Bryant) that she should go outside the 6th, preferably to Farragut. Maybe the Jones folks are doing the same, and thought revealing donors' occupations might reveal that they're not 6th district folk? Conjecture on my part...

Matthew Jones's picture

I don't even know who most

I don't even know who most of these contributors are, we made a mistake.
Shelly Bell - Human Resources somewhere
Bruce Williams - Heritage Pools Owner
I don't know the other people.

I know why nobody new ever runs for office
now. You get torn down no matter how much you
try.

Bbeanster's picture

Since I have been part of

Since I have been part of Matthew's troubles, I want to say that I have heard many positive things about him from a lot of people. Matthew is a hard-working, well-educated young guy whose father has been a highly-respected deputy with the KCSO for many years. And before anybody jumps to conclusions about what that means, Captain Don Jones was not a part of the Hutchison inner-circle, and (I'm pretty sure I'm right about this), didn't even get a promotion under Hutchison, despite being known as one of the best officers on the force.

Honestly, I'm thinking Matthew is a political rookie who is feeling his way through the process, and that he hasn't done anything that most any other candidate wouldn't have done in accepting the contributions he has. I also believe that Lumpy latched onto him, rather than the other way around.

Tamara Shepherd's picture

Possibility of being beholden

Betty: "I also believe that Lumpy latched onto him, rather than the other way around."

I get this sense, too, Betty.

Matthew, please don't take my comments personally, but realize that the volume of your donations coming from developers will incite skepticism from voters.

Especially since the contentious system wide school rezoning last spring, many 6th district residents (and residents elsewhere, I think) are aware of the impact to schools resulting from undirected or even unfettered residential development.

That is, we are looking at the volume of overcrowed schools, the existence of schools burdened by an overconcentration of poor and struggling students, and the fast-growing rift between "good schools" and "bad schools," and we are increasingly aware that these problems are created when local government provides too little oversight of residential development.

Of course, the hot button issue of the county's use of TIFs has recently arisen, too. People are clamoring that the IDB and commission aren't imposing that "but for" condition on developers wanting these prop tax breaks.

It is these concerns that will result in voters' closer scrutiny of *all* candidates' financial support base. I think its safe to say that voters are looking for the commission candidates least likely to be beholden to these interests.

(I have to leave and get some work done, now.)

Matthew Jones's picture

Mrs. Shepherd, I hope that

Mrs. Shepherd,
I hope that you and everyone else knows that I would never support anyting that had a negative effect on the schools that my children attend. Development will be researched and a community impact statment will be made before any development goes up in my district.
Thank you,
Matthew Jones

Bump

(Until Brian Paone has an opportunity later this weekend to add Sixth District financial disclosures to the Political Knoxville site, I'll continue to "bump" this post, so that it's visible on the sidebar.)

What Brian provides is good,

What Brian provides is good, but the extra info from this post was key extension of that sort of information.

I like this sort of interaction for each district and refer within the post to the actual docs Brian has on his site with links.

Kathy Bryant looks good on

Kathy Bryant looks good on paper after seeing the contributions above. How was she at your forum?

Tamara Shepherd's picture

Kathy Bryant

Kathy Bryant sounds good in person, too, jbr. Told ya she's a straight-arrow. Send her a check, why doncha! That's:

Friends of Kathy Bryant

Knoxville, TN 37923

Since we've got two Dems in the 6th District primary, I'm hoping Dem voters don't do too much of this "pruning" of the Rep ticket in my district's primary. We need those Dem votes to push Kathy on through.

How was she at the forum? The best informed and most grammatically correct one up there. (Most of 'em had us cringing at their speech.)

Bird_dog's picture

Kathy's not in my district, but I'd vote for her.

Her named contributors are from 2nd Pres - I think she had a fundraiser at Sullivan's? They are all straight up folks.

Tamara Shepherd's picture

Fellow churchmembers

Kathy took some flack for that out-of-district fundraiser at Sullivans. The deal was, she attends church with owner Charles Irvine and he made the room available to her for free (and contributed to her campaign, as well).

Kathy's got some help within the 6th, as well.

jbr's picture

I would not have paid any

I would not have paid any attention to the location being in another district. That seems nonsensical to think, let alone mention. Not by you but by whomever generated original 'flack'

At this point I would like to see Bryant on County Commission in the end.

I didn't understand, either?

Redmond, I'm with Birddog--what's "breed specific legislation?"

(Betty, thanks for the heads-up. Not surprising, tho, is it?)

redmondkr's picture

Breed Specific Legislation

Breed Specific Legislation can make it illegal to own a specific breed of dog regardless of how well it has been trained and socialized. It causes the breed to pay for the irresponsible behavior of its owners.

51 Campaign Finance Disclosures available free of charge!

Sorry - I forgot what my login was for this joint. Forgive the unverified name!

Anyway, Political Knoxville has posted 51 campaign finance disclosure forms for this year's primary, as well as four bonus CFDs of interest: County Mayor Mike Ragsdale, Cindy Buttry, Billy Tindell, and the Public Trust PAC.

(link...)

The remainder are in-house and just need to be scanned. They should be available Friday evening or Saturday afternoon at the latest.

I'll post this comment in one more place and call it a night. Happy reading! :)

Tamara Shepherd's picture

Separate Blog for "51 Campaign Finance disclosures"

Because Brian's hard work is likely to be of much interest to readers, I've copied and pasted his comment/link into a separate blog post of its own. It will get more notice!

Please post comments there, so that we don't have two conversations going on this subject?

GDrinnen2's picture

Matthew, Please don't

Matthew,

Please don't mistake my questions as an attempt to "tear you down". Having been around them my whole adult life, Lord knows I admire anyone willing to submit themselves to the rigors of a campaign. However, part of the evaluation of any candidate should include supporters, particularly those that help with strategy and fundraising.
