Tom Humphrey has the rundown.

You expect this kind of pandering from Republicans, but it's disappointing coming from McWherter. We understand where he's coming from, but he could have stopped short of criticizing Obama's efforts to uphold the Constitution he swore to "preserve, protect and defend."

Sadly, it appears even Democrats are running against Obama this year. As our friend to the West says, they are chasing votes they can't get. To which I'd add that they are pissing off their base in the process. But what are you going to do, vote for Haslam?

McWherter should walk that statement back and revise and extend his remarks.

I've had the "running away

I've had the "running away from Obama" discussion with a congressman or two and they didn't like it. They were making the claim that Obama polled 35% in their district. I said the reason is that they acted like scared rabbits in the campaign.

Are Democrats in this state so weak that they couldn't bring 15% to the sitting President of the United Sates of America? Where exactly is the Democratic wing of the Democratic party?

I disagree with Mike BUT

I am still a proud Democrat who has NEVER voted for a Rethug and never will. And now that the GOP has been swallered up (yeah, I made that one up.) by the TEAs, their candidates are going to be so low down and dirty, that one has to be raised by wolves to want to vote for any of them.
I do disagree with Mike on this one thing...because the Arizona law is illegal and the Federal law supercedes it. And it is racist and discriminates against anyone who is NOT lilly white or speaks Spanish.
However, I don't care how many deceptive ads Bill Haslam runs, he has exposed his support for the TEA PARTY racists/bigots. If y'all want that kind of Governor, fine.
Mike McWherter actually has plans for jobs creation, increasing business growth, new green energy projects, and real and solid plans for helping PUBLIC education.
And don't worry; there are plenty more Dedicated, Liberal Democrats around Knoxville. They just don't have time to respond...they are busy phone calling and canvassing for Randy, Sam, Mike Dockery, Nathan Vaughn AND Mike McWherter!
Come on down to our Dems Headquarters tomorrow night...it is 'College Dems Night'!!

There are two ways to keep the bears out of your garbage. You can try to do it the way the Arizona law proposes and shoot all the bears...Or you can put the garbage where the bears can't get to it and they'll go back into the woods.

You want to stop illegal immigration you hammer the people who gives them the jobs they are risking their lives to get to. Of course that would hurt Republicans who want cheap lawn care and servants.

McWherter's Pandering

In case you didn't notice, 90 percent of ETenneseans want immigration laws enforced, amnesty rejected, and basically want the illegals removed from their midst.

Its funny how you can call a position which leans toward the views of the overwhelming majority, "pandering".

Something else I find funny are the odds that here in ETenn, the blog we get is the one reflecting the federal govt line. Tell us just how an anomaly like that comes about. Sounds interesting.

I saw a talking head on Faux today while I was at the cardiac rehab center. That's the only place it's visible to me since all my receivers are set to reject it. I think they run Faux to get my heart rate up while I'm on the treadmill.

Their pundit was yelling that the Justice Department's suit against Arizona will be 'Obama's downfall'.

Then they broke for G. Gordon Liddy to tell us that he had jumped on the gold bandwagon ten years ago. I guess he learned about the benefits of gold investing while in prison.

Andy Berke

Southern Beale lays it out very well in this post, in which she says:

I'm thinking we lefties need to write in a candidate. We need to put our heads together and figure out who our ideal candidate would be, maybe Sen. Andy Berke or Rep. Steve Cohen -- and don't worry guys, you won't win, so no fear, carry on with your day jobs as usual. But just write that person's name in on the ballot in November to -- and I shudder as I write this -- "send a mesage."

I love the idea. Memphis needs to keep Steve Cohen right where he is, so I'm writing in Andy Berke.

I've never done that before, but there's a first time for everything.

R. Neal's picture

The problem with a write-in

The problem with a write-in vote is that it won't be counted unless the write-in candidate files a certification that their write-in votes are to be counted, and it has to be filed 50 days before the primary or election. So basically a protest write-in vote at this point won't register any protest at all.

This seems like a BS law to me, because a lot can happen between qualifying deadline and election day.

Andy Axel's picture

So basically a protest

So basically a protest write-in vote at this point won't register any protest at all.

Yep. Have had this discussion a few times with my wife, who'd at times rather vote for Marge Simpson than for the "Democratic" candidate. Problem is, since a write-in doesn't factor into the vote total either way, it neither helps nor hurts.

So the only real valid protest vote is to cast your lot with the GOP candidate.

(I live in Sen Dist 21. Last time Doug Henry was up for a vote, I cast my lot with Bob Krumm, not because I wanted Krumm to win, necessarily.

Thankfully, Henry has drawn a credible primary challenger in this cycle - Jeff Yarbro. If you've read Post Politics lately, you'll see that he's come out in favor of reproductive choice (!) and he's also on record (on Facebook, at least) of attending Nashville "Pride" rallies. He's also hammering Henry on his environmental record, which has been friendly to the mountaintop removal concerns.

It'll be good to get an opportunity to cast a vote for someone who has, in the words of a commenter at PP, "nailed his colors to the mast" rather than boogering around trying to triangulate votes away from his opponent. Who knows, Yarbro may be fighting a losing battle, as the incumbent is lining up state senators, Metro councilpersons, and the governor. But this race is the one thing keeping me from hopping the line to cast a vote against Wamp.)

Russ's picture

So the only real valid

So the only real valid protest vote is to cast your lot with the GOP candidate.

Can't do that; my head would explode.

For me, it's either an admittedly meaningless write-in vote or no vote at all, and I can't see skipping the vote in the governor's race.

Andy Axel's picture

Funny how it doesn't affect

Funny how it doesn't affect your Democratic representatives in the same way. If only their heads exploded when they voted with the Republicans on policy matters... but sadly, they live to capitulate another day.

R. Neal's picture

I voted on a completely blank

I voted on a completely blank Democratic primary ballot in May. Not a single candidate in my district or county wide. First time ever. Just pushed the "cast ballot" button.

In the general election for Governor there will be a BUNCH of other independent candidates besides Haslam and McWherter who qualified to be the ballot:

Brandon Dodds
Samuel David Duck
Carl Twofeathers Whitaker
Boyce T. McCall
Toni K. Hall
June Griffin
Donald Ray McFolin
James Reesor
Bayron Binkley
Mike Knois
Thomas Smith II
David Gatchell
Howard M. Switzer
Linda Kay Perry

Several are known serial candidates or nuts. Maybe there's one or two on there that actually offers a "progressive" alternative? (I'm not familiar with them, though.)

ETA: David Gatchell, the "None of the Above" candidate, might be your best bet. If elected, he pledges to resign within 80 days so a special election can be held with new candidates.

June Griffin? Seriously?

June Griffin? Seriously? Hell, I'm surprised the GOP didn't nominate her.

“When Ron Ramsey decided to honor me by doing his big boots commercials, I couldn’t resist the urge to honor him right back. A few thoughts about politics and religion...

“I have been talking about ‘disengaging from the federal government’ for over two years, but this will need to be a slow, methodical, carefully conceived endeavor. Sudden secession from the ‘union’ or seeking to ‘abolish’ the DC monster with military force is ill-advised – even though Zach might disagree.” – James Reesor
---------------------
“I have expressed my views on the Muslim (Islamic) religion for more than ten years. A person would need to be blind, deaf and stupid not to understand that their history has nothing to do with Jehovah God, Lord Jesus Christ or the Holy Spirit as defined in the Holy Words. Ron Ramsey has apparently seen the light?” – James Reesor
---------------------
“My personal contempt for ‘money’ and the corruption it causes civilizations has been explained on my web sites. The reason for my negative attitude has to do with ‘lust for money’ more than anything else. When faith, trust, and love is put into currency instead of God, people are less likely to experience Heaven.” – James Reesor
---------------------
“Owning and operating any kind of business in America under current laws and regulations is an extremely difficult challenge. Unless we get back to basics by stripping away government interference, low-profit yields will lead to more bankruptcies and unemployment. Never run government like a business.” – James Reesor

Setting The Basil Record Straight

It was July 14, 2010, when Tennessee White Horse Independent gubernatorial candidate James Reesor produced a YouTube video titled "Pick Your Next Tennessee Governor." Basil Marceaux's red-shirt photo caught the attention of a few people in the media. Interest in Basil by Internet users, Nashville's WSMV-TV, Washington D.C.'s Wonkette, MSNBC-TV's Colbert and Matthews led to an avalanche of media attention. Basil's superstar status among voters rose higher due to a satirical YouTube video endorsement by the alleged Tennessee political boss.

Tennessee voters: Vote in the primary today -- 5 August 2010

James Reesor's picture

Quote Me In Your Emails...

“Millions of citizens living in Tennessee did not vote yesterday. The August 5th primary election is now history and battle lines are forming between Democrats and Republicans in anticipation of the November 2nd general election. Mike McWherter and Bill Haslam are now famous in our state, thanks to the media.” – James Reesor
---------------------
“My respect for the campaigns of Ron Ramsey, Zach Wamp, Ron Noonan, and especially Basil Marceaux – and my sincere sympathy for their inability to convince most voters to give them a victory – continues as we move forward. Campaign staff members should be congratulated for all of their hard work.” – James Reesor
---------------------
“Now that the elitist bigots in the Tennessee media are no longer able to use a coming ‘primary’ as an excuse for ignoring ‘we the people’ candidates who are NOT affiliated with corrupt political parties, will they surprise us by treating us fairly? Will editors for newspapers assign reporters to publicize our ideas?” – James Reesorsor
---------------------
“As most intelligent people already know, idiot TV producers will try to march Independents up against a rock wall like they did Basil Marceaux, give us a minute to babble a few incoherent words under bad lighting, and then expect gullible viewers to believe they treated us equally with Democrats and Republicans.” – James Reesor
---------------------
“If voters in Tennessee aren’t smart enough to realize that things will get worse under the leadership of candidates controlled by special interest groups and corrupt political parties – Democrat or Republican – then the majority of us might us well give up and stop pretending like regular politicians care about us.” – James Reesor
---------------------
“FLASH FROM THE PAST. My congratulations was given to the winners and my condolences were given to the losers in a personal letter, on my four web site message boards, and on my Facebook note several days before the primary election took place. This documented ‘prediction’ proved to be accurate.” – James Reesor

James Reesor 2010 Campaign Press Releases: Permission to copy and share this press release and all web site information is hereby granted. No need for further requests.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
10 August 2010

Tennessee White Horse Independent
Gubernatorial Candidate James Reesor
Believes Satan Controls Tennessee

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – "Politics in Tennessee is too corrupt to fix; Convincing Satan to repent of sin would be easier. Voting machines in Tennessee are rigged; Winners are hand-picked in smoke-filled rooms by greedy bankers and arrogant business owners with connections to computer hackers. Political degenerates rise to the top in the traditional two-party political system; Idealistic political reformers are ostracized, slandered, and persecuted. Wicked Democrats and Republicans despise right-wing Christian conservatives and Independents; Evil liberals lust after politicians who write stupid laws against the sanctity of life and trust in God. Tolerance for rebellious souls who break universal laws by serving false gods is politically correct; Christians who talk to lost souls about Jesus are accused of committing a hate crime. Hard-working taxpayers are treated like low-wage slaves in Tennessee; Criminals in prison are treated like kings and queens. Media propaganda creates clones that act like robots; Anyone with an original thought is believed to be from outer space. I have no confidence in the Tennessee political system; Too many blind, deaf, and dumb elitist bigots are journalists. Voting is a waste of time; Trying to stay informed about political campaigns is proof of insanity. Freedom to do evil is a popular idea in 2010; Freedom to serve Lord Jesus Christ in public places is no longer a civil right that is respected by American liberals, atheists or Muslims. Credit card debt makes slaves out of poor people; Unemployment leads to bankruptcy for those who can afford a lawyer. Incompetent liars run the media; Gullible people believe bad news is good news. Rich people control corrupt politicians; Corrupt politicians control governments. Move to Tennessee to get away from high taxes; Move to Mexico to get away from illegal aliens. Smart people know they are stupid; Idiots think they are smart. People with common sense understand the difference between right and wrong; People with common sense would rather stay home than vote for clowns who make promises they never keep. Satan and his friends changed the American dream into a nightmare; A few of us Christians woke up screaming and are mad as hell," James Reesor said

You're right about most of

You're right about most of that, but you cross the line between government authority and religious authority a few times too many. Government has no business choosing which gods are false or which souls are lost. It also has no business choosing among political parties, but it does. We need to fix the cheats parties and politicians have built into the system, but our Constitution precludes using government to enact religious goals. It leaves that to churches.

I commend you for fighting the rampant corruption in Tennessee, but you need to think deeper about what roles government and churches play in a free society. Hate crimes involve much, much more than talk, and when you say "Christians who talk to lost souls about Jesus are accused of committing a hate crime," you are bearing false witness.

James Reesor's picture

Look At The Big Picture

I am not a believer in separation between church and state as it has been presented over the years. My five lifetime priorities places God at number one, Planet Earth at number two -- followed by Family, Community and Nation in that order.

If you are unable to comprehend the meaning of my words, that is a problem that only you can correct. Trying to explain "God" and "government" and "reality" to millions of people is not an easy thing for one man to do.

You accused me of "bearing false witness." No comment.

Demons

Demons are invisible spirit entities that have a propensity for deception. They often take possession of inferior, rebellious souls who lack sufficient wisdom to understand the meaning of faith -- and why it is essential for those of us who choose to believe in God.

Insulting Christians is something Satan and his demonic underlings do often. There is a spiritual war between good and evil that includes people who believe themselves to be intellectually superior. Their foolish perspectives on life come out of hearts filled with hatred for the laws of God -- and for those of us who cherish his wisdom.

Though most atheists, agnostics and false god enthusiasts fail to appreciate the divinity of a higher intelligence, Lord Jesus Christ taught us to have compassion and love for our enemies. Doing as He recommended is not an easy task, but we do try.

By the way, a "thought" is evidence of a spiritual force that comes from the realm of either God or Satan. We Christians seldom hear "voices" coming from empty space. As far as I am concerned, quoting a skeptic, cynic, or any other unbeliever to prove a point in arguments with people who believe in God does little to convince me that my choices in life are based on superstition or insanity -- even though I have become known as "Crazy Man James."
