A sinkhole and a water main break have caused a shutdown of Alcoa Highway, all lanes northbound and one lane southbound.

The section of Alcoa Hwy affected is north of the U.T. Hospital interchange before the Buck Karnes bridge.

Knoxville Police Department says northbound traffic is being diverted to John Sevier Highway and then to Chapman Highway.

According to reports, the problem is expected to be corrected by 10 A.M.

Update: 10:45 AM, lanes still closed.

I think water main break lead to creation of the sinkhole

This is what happens when your local utility is pushed to be more concerned about making downtown and Cumberland Avenue look good than they are about their core functions of maintaining the utility infrastructure.

Let's see if KUB will fess up as to when the last time that series of water mains south of the river were tested or if they are still in that we'll fix it when it breaks mentality. That reactive thinking is why they are under so many remediation plans to comply with the Clean Water Act.

10am reopen is probably for Thursday

Most of the news stories I saw early this morning said that the closure would likely be until Thursday morning.

Getting to town was a pain in the butt this morning, even though I waited until after 10am to head in via Chapman Hwy.

There was an army working on

There was an army working on it late today. Literally dozens of trucks, heavy machinery, as well as law enforcement.

Not sure how to put blame on the break, but I wonder if the sinkholes would have happened had the earth not been so evacuated of moisture because of the drought which has been likely intensified by climate change. This is a huge repair bill we'll all have to pay.

Third route

Too bad we don't have a third route in from the South. Hmmmm.
