I've been hoping for an invitation to the inauguration, based on my donations to the Obama campaign.

The Little Rock Nine and the Tuskegee Airmen have received inaugural invitations, and I will gladly give up a seat to any one of them. They deserve it far, far more than I do.

Sadly, some can't attend, due to finances, or, in the case of the Airmen, ill health.

question

what does the official invitations from the Presidential Inaugural committee mean? What do I do with it?

Presidential Inaugural Committee invitation

I received mine in the mail yesterday, officially inviting me to attend the inaugrations of Barack Obama and Joseph Biden in the city of Washington D.C., January 20, 2009.

It's very pretty, embossed on heavy stock, with an official-looking gold seal at the top. Included is a brochure offering inaugural memorabilia, like a plate, coffee mug, or lapel pin.

I would say, the invitation is just a come-on to sell inaugural junk to suckers like you and me and won't grant us admittance to any inaugural function. But you are cordially and officially invited to come to Washington D.C. and join the throng of 3 million on the Mall. Don't worry about fainting from the press and smell of all those tightly packed bodies -- you won't be able to fall down.

I, being one of the favored few, plan to frame mine. And watch the ceremonial replays on TV.

But I think I may order that coffee mug....

Obama gear

The Walgreens on Magnolia has a sign up advertising all kinds of Obama stuff. I think they even have Obama towels.

Invitations

I got that invitation as well but it was not based on my donations as I only donated about $200 dollars and did not receive the invite at home. I received it at my job because Barack and campaign stayed at my hotel in New York and I was the go between in getting them a good rate and me just a low level employee. I found that very special.

Screw DC, come to the Square Room on Mkt Square

Who wants to freeze on the mall when you can rock out right here?
Come celebrate Barack Obama's inauguration at the Square Room on Market Square!
TIckets are 15$ in advance (purchase at Bliss or Vagabondia on Market Square, or email glostik@bellsouth.net.)
Tickets are 20$ at the door.
There will be appetizers, a cash bar, live music from R&B group Royal Avenue, video from local/national volunteer efforts, live link to D.C. events.
We are keeping the price low so all can attend, but we are asking for cash (for Project Help) or non-perishable food donations (for Second Harvest).

It does look cool

"Invite" indeed. It looks nice and I'm having a hard time throwing it in the recycle bin, but the other sheet enclosed states it is a commemorative invitation entitling access to any of the public events (i.e., those open to the other 3 million people who don't have invitations).

P.S. I'm actually tempted to order something like a coffee mug, but I've always hated seeing that crap in other people's homes. Guess it's a sign I'm a geezer now.

Inaugural Committee Invitation

I received one also, but until I read comments from others I really didn't think much of it. Since now I know that only 1 million (can't believe I just said "only") were printed, I think I will frame mine as well. I've actually gone back to my mail bin and pulled it out to ensure it doesn't get dumped with the junk mail.
