Sandra Clark talks with Jamie Woodson, who says Republicans in control of the state legislature can be fair and "wise and thoughtful." Not so fast, says Sandra: The state legislature is Knox County Commission on steroids. And now 100+ years of "outs" have just moved "in." Read the whole thing for a look at what's in store.
Betty Bean speculates about Scoobie's appeal and whether Commission will run out the clock on his seat thus sparing R. Larry Smith the unpleasantness of having to appoint someone to run against him in 2010 for the one remaining seat. (Hey, maybe that's not a bad idea. Folks in the 7th District can start getting used to having only one representative, giving them a head start on the rest of Knox Co.) Betty also discusses Greg Mackay's future, which may not be as gloomy as previously thought, at least in the short term.
Larry Van Guilder notes that Lockett took one for the team on Question 4, and predicts legal challenges for Question 3 to prevent West Knox good old boys running roughshod all over county government. (They don't already?)

Greg McKay
Smart, competent, good at his job.
Would the party of Rumsfeld, Brownie, et al keep him and not replace him with some incompetent political hack? Wishful thinking, Betty.
First order of business- waste millions of dollars on new voting machines that don't work and are easily hacked. Then it goes downhill from there.
With respect to Larry's piece- I don't see a successful court challenge right away based on a 'what if.' It could be counter-argued that other counties have this form of representation so they do not represent a de facto unequal representative government. Give it 10 to 20 years of elections and data to demonstrate it, then someone will have a case.
Larry has a much stronger point in the issue of campaign finance and who is going to 'own' these 11 seats. Kiss those ridgetops goodbye, folks. Take photos of them in beautiful fall colors NOW because they won't be there much longer.
Don't be so pessimistic...
Don't be so pessimistic... I'm currently serving on the City-County Ridgetop Protection Taskforce and I'm optimistic about passing an ordinance that protects our ridges and views.
Throughout our history, our City has defined itself by our scenic ridges and waterways. I'm confident that a majority of both of our legislative bodies can reach a consensus on this issue and ensure that the "beautiful fall colors" will be enjoyed in our community for many generations to come.
Good Lord, Steve, what part
Good Lord, Steve, what part of "Bye-Bye Mackay" makes it sound like I don't think he's going to lose his job?
The GOP is going to sunset the state election commission, reconstitute and county ECs, and Mackay will be gone. The only question is when. If they do as soon as they can, he's probably gone by April 2009. If the Republicans decide to take their time, he'll survive until 2011. Either way, he's going to be replaced by a Republican. That's the way it works.
The longer the better...
The longer we have him, the better, especially if we're about to procure another round of voting machines. I hope they delay the inevitable until 2011. (crossing fingers).
Road building on borrowed
Road building on borrowed money. I assume they will have to say up front more accurately what the projects will cost. Bond issues?
Ironic Tennesseans have significantly embraced what the nation has thoroughly dismissed politically.
