That's what Tim Miller of autographed book seller FlatSigned Books in Nashville says.

In a press release, Miller says he recently learned that signed books in his possession that were purportedly hand-signed by John McCain had allegedly been signed by his secretary. The books had been consigned to a major New York auction house. Miller says "This one auction house and others just discovered ... that they have unwittingly been selling allegedly secretarial signed John McCain books for months and now they must do the very embarrassing and financially hurtful steps of letting their customers know that they had been wrong when they had previously sold 'signed' John McCain books as being hand-signed by the presidential candidate."

The company says McCain's signature carries both historical and monetary significance, but that his name written on a book by a secretary is valueless. They say this discredits an industry which takes great pride in authenticity.

Miller also says that books allegedly signed by McCain were being sold on McCain's campaign website for a premium, but disappeared from the website about a month ago. The campaign has not responded to Miller's inquiries about the books and the authenticity of their signatures. Miller says that if the books were not signed by McCain it constitutes fraud.

Links?

Randy,
Any links? This sounds like fraud to me. any chance that McCain, himself, might be in legal hot water?

Just a Press Release?

okay, all I can find about this is a press release, and a MarketWatch story that pretty much recapitulates the press release.

In other words, we have one guy making the claim. Without further evidence, I put him somewhat above the guy who claims to have had sex with and used crack with Obama. (The "fake autographs" guy gets some more credibility because the claims aren't so outrageous. If this is true, McCain is embarrassed. If the Obama charges had been true, it would have ended his campaign, and possibly his political career.)

Why would he lie about it?

Why would he lie about it? Doesn't help his credibility as a seller of stuff that requires credibility. The sense I get is that he's just pissed off over having to go back to people he sold books to. And trying to get a little PR mileage out of it to offset the embarrassment. He apparently takes this authenticity stuff pretty seriously, which I guess makes sense in his line of work.
