ETSPJ Front Page Follies presents: The Sunshine Boys

Submitted by R. Neal on Mon, 2008/06/23 - 6:54am.

The East Tennessee Society of Professional Journalists presents their annual Front Page Follies dinner, auction, and show at the Knoxville Convention Center on July 19, 2008.

This year's production is "The Sunshine Boys," featuring KNS editor Jack McElroy and attorney Richard Hollow, plus other hilarity ripped from the local headlines.

Tickets are $100 and all proceeds go to a U.T. endowment that funds journalism and broadcasting scholarships. Press release after the jump, and more info at the ETSPJ website.

The 2008 Front Page Follies will laud “The Sunshine Boys,” News Sentinel editor Jack McElroy and First Amendment attorney Richard Hollow, for their pursuit of justice after Knox County Commission plunged our area into darkness with backroom deals on January 31, 2007, dubbed “Black Wednesday.” Maybe not as funny as George Burns and Walter Matthau in the acclaimed 1975 movie or earlier Neil Simon play, McElroy and Hollow made an even bigger impact on the lives of area citizens, who have a more open government as a result of the decision upholding the Sunshine Law.

What will be hilarious, however, are the performances of the Follies cast, led by director Carol Zinavage. Some examples of song parodies now being rehearsed are: “Sunshine in our meetings --makes us nervous….” (to the tune ‘Sunshine on My Shoulders’); City Council members singing “Thank God We’re Not County Boys” (to the tune of “Thank God I’m a Country Boy”); “The Ballad of Pat Head Summitt,” with apologies to Davy Crockett: “… learned how to stare when she was only three….;” and “Bubba Shot the Red Light….”
This year the 30th annual Follies will also honor the Nine Citizens who joined the legal action, represented by Herb Moncier. The gridiron show is organized by the East Tennessee Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

The Front Page Follies will be staged at the Knoxville Convention Center with dinner, auction and show on July 19, 2008. Tables of ten at $1,000 will receive preferential seating in the order payment is received. Proceeds from ticket sales go to an endowment fund for scholarships for journalism and broadcasting students at UT, and for a scholarship at Pellissippi State Technical Community College.

To purchase tickets, please send a check payable to “University of Tennessee” with FPF in the memo line to: Front Page Follies, 1345 Circle Park, 302 Communications Building, Knoxville TN 37996. For credit card payment (Visa, MC and Discover), please call Jennifer Horner at the UT Development Office: 974-7073 or e-mail her at jhorner@utk.edu. Not content with just the Sunshine Law lawsuit...

Jack McElroy strikes again. Why stop at editorial advocacy when you can be part of the process?

Mr. McElroy likes to push the boundaries. But when was he elected?

Will McElroy publish the liquor by the drink petition? Seems only fair.

Why did you hijack this thread

for your screed against Jack McElroy? This is an announcement of an honor he shares with Rick Hollow and with the group of nine citizens who backed the lawsuit against County Commission's transgressions on Black Wednesday, and for a show that most of the readers of knoxviews likely would enjoy. If you want to bash Jack I'm sure there are much more appropriate venues. You could also try e-mailing him directly, unless you just like to see your screeds on the screen everywhere, all the time.

ja

I see...

Do you actually support crossing over from editorial advocacy to actually participating in the signature collecting process?

I think it is unethical for Mr. McElroy to do what he did.

Why would you charge thread hijacking? I don't see it. It is a thread about Mr. McElroy. If you have posting privileges make a new thread.

I have already expressed my opinion directly to Mr. McElroy. He has not replied. I thought it would be good to see what other people thought. If that's okay with you, of course.

It is a thread about Mr.

It is a thread about Mr. McElroy.

Actually, no, it's a thread about the annual ETSPJ Front Page Follies event to raise money for journalism and broadcast scholarships.

We take it you won't be attending?

We take it you won't be

We take it you won't be attending?

Probably not, but it is a good cause. God knows we need some responsible journalism in this town.

So, what to you make of Mr. McElroy crossing the line from editorial advocacy to active participation in the KCP cause?

I was surprised when you didn't post about this.

Do you like anyone in

Do you like anyone in Knoxville or do you just prefer to bitch about everything anonymously on the internet? I'm going to start calling you Cas Walker II.

I have been called worse...

I'm going to start calling you Cas Walker II.

Cas said if you were against about 90% of things you had it about right. I didn't understand that but now I see his point.

I don't side with the local Star Chamber. That doesn't mean I am wrong. This county has changed a great deal in the past six years. Children were read to and the county moved forward, at least that is what I read in the daily paper.

What really happened was much different.

Is change always good? Term limits brought change. How much of that change was positive?

Try trading in some of that idealism for pragmatism. It will change your outlook.

Try trading in some of that

Try trading in some of that idealism for pragmatism. It will change your outlook.

The scales have dropped from mine eyes! I can see! Thanks to Cas Walker II I am healed from my idealism!!!
Praise Jesus! Go Vols!

unless you just like to see

unless you just like to see your screeds on the screen everywhere, all the time.

Ding! Ding! Ding!
