This article in the Wall Street Journal (link...) gives a great overview of the growing relationship between transit (meaning rail transit) and high quality, livable housing options. Rail, because developers will develop next to it. They're not much interested in buses, since those routes can be changed fairly easily, leaving the intended TOD "high and dry".

But Wait

Hold on now, we keep being told that population density must PRECEDE the building of rail systems! Not that it matters when we build massive highways and let development occur along those corridors.

Shoot for regional

Shoot for regional city-to-city heavy rail first.

I think that is a great idea. An Atlanta-Chattanooga-Knoxville route would be great. Then a Knoxville-Nashville-eventually Memphis route.

I remember being in South Bend, IN, and everyone there loved the train service to Chicago. They used it for work, play, and shopping.
