Excellent map
First time I've ever seen this....thanks!
Map appears to show a turning-loop track on the 6th Avenue line near 6th and Hoitt. Wonder if it was actually in the street or on a side lot? Although I've spent all but the first two of my 53 years in Indiana, I have fond memories of vacations spent with aunts and cousins on Gillespie Ave in the 60s and 70s.
I think, by '31, some of the
I think, by '31, some of the old lines had already been converted to bus routes or "electric trolleys" (electric buses running off overhead wires). I'm pretty sure the actual street car ran all the way to Cherokee CC at one point.
Knoxville transit ca. 1930's
Is the horizontal grey area in middle of the map the Hiwassie North Ridge Hills, or is that further north toward Fountain City?
Trolleybuses
As I understand, Knoxville had only one trackless trolley: that operated, I believe, on the Line #8 to Lyons View/Kingston Pike. It lasted only fifteen years (1930-1945), and came to an end at least two years before the final two street railway lines ended. The final two street railway lines, I believe operated on Magnolia Avenue and on Broadway toward Fountain City. The two street railways in question ceased operation on August 1, 1947.
