saved her vacation.

We taxied to a “legevakta” -- an accident-emergency clinic. Start to finish, door-to-door, the entire process took two hours. That included getting checked in, waiting for the doctor, X-rays, treatment, getting a prescription filled, and the taxi back to our hotel. The doctor was very professional and patient; she gave us thorough instructions on followup care, gave my friend a set of crutches and a prescription for pain and inflammation, the clinic called us a cab, and we were on our way. The fee for all of this wonderful service?

Nothing.

My mother broke her hip

My mother broke her hip while vacationing in New Zealand about ten years ago. At that time (I'm not sure if this is still true) all foreign travelers to New Zealand were required to pay a small insurance fee as part of their plane ticket so that they would be covered by the national health system while there. I think it cost about $10. My mother had a hospital stay of over two weeks and a serious operation, lots of meds, tons of visits from physical therapists and everything else. There were no out of pocket costs charged to my parents and the New Zealand government did not do anything like attempt to collect from my parents' American insurance. Plus the national health service paid for my father to stay in a hotel adjacent to the hospital for the duration of my mother's stay. He offered to pay for it himself, but the folks there would not hear of it. My mother has nothing but good things to say about her experiences with the New Zealand health care system. Strangely, my father is still against national health care. He also watches Fox News, which I think must have rotted his brain.
I also spent 6 months in Scotland and was absolutely thrilled with the national health system there.

Is this

Is this socialized medicine something like universal health insurance? :-)

I'm totally jealous of those in civilized countries where people come before profits on occasion.
