CSX Reporting a Fatality in Knox County
Submitted by redmondkr on Tue, 2008/05/27 - 10:16am.
I keep a scanner running near the computer and listen in to local railroad dispatchers. The CSX dispatcher in Jacksonville, FL, has just reported a fatality involving a pedestrian in Knox County near the Anderson County line.
Karns Volunteer Fire Department has been dispatched and is searching the scene. It is apparently near the tunnel in the Solway Community.
UPDATE: Karns is asking for Lifestar support. There may be hope left.
UPDATE: They are shutting down southbound Pellissippi Parkway to form an LZ for Lifestar. Oak Ridge Highway is shut down completely at the scene near Jim Jones Road.
UPDATE: Karns reports at 11:54 that the patient is aboard Lifestar and they are recovering equipment. There is head and leg trauma but at least there is life. Oak Ridge Highway and Pellissippi Parkway have been re-opened.

My experience was that Karns was dispatched within a very few minutes after the CSX dispatcher told the train crew that he would alert local law enforcement.
There was certainly much less than thirty minutes before Karns was on the scene. They did report some delay as they searched for the victim.

The CXS dispatcher has re-stopped the involved train at Amherst and ordered a taxi to transport the crew as a relief crew continues with the south-bound train. Railroad traffic is back to normal.
Reports are that the incident appeared to be an attempted suicide.

Just checked the three tv news sites, WVLT is the only one with the story, and details are sketchy, as is the KNS article. This is the most info I've seen so far.
Ironicallly, it will most likely be the lead story on all three news broadcasts tonight.

I spoke with a retired engineer once who was involved in a grade crossing fatality. He said that he never got the look on the young woman's face out of his mind. She drove right into the path of his locomotive.
Great reporting, kr.
Story now at KnoxNews.
I don't get why that account suggests there was a 30+ minute delay in emergency response?

I'd rather be cycling.

Must be a slow news day. I thought it was getting into cockfighting season.
