The climb up Suck Creek Mountain went well. I found a good rhythm and chugged five miles uphill. I was kind of glad for the climb, because I thought it would help me warm up.
I'm exhausted from reading that and Brian's just getting warmed up. Follow the link and check out Brian's outstanding photo journal of this grueling event.
I did the 100KM part of this ride a few years back. It was sweltering that day. With two tough climbs I did it in 3 hours 31 minutes which was a tick under 17.8mph. It's a great event and well planned. I still think English Mountain is tougher challenge in terms of climbing and nothing touches the Cherohala in terms of pure "Why am I doing this to myself?" especially when you jam over the top and make the run back down. I passed two Harleys on the left on the descent. They sped up to catch me and paced me down front and back. At first I wondered about the safety of it, but they were able to help me carve around other cars. Hit 59MPH on the descent in one spot. It was fun.
I still haven't done the Assault on Mount Mitchell, but getting a dossard is too damn hard and I am waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of shape.

The spouse has done all of these, some of them twice (he did Mt. Mitchell before I knew him, but the rest he's done in the last 5 years or so.)
He thinks the Cherohala is tough, but the one that seemed to get him was English Mountain. I think he underestimated what it would be like.
I've never ridden English Mountain. Sounds like its a steep haul up the mountain.

I'd rather be cycling.
I'm exhausted from reading that
Heh. I think reading through that entire monstrosity of a post is nearly as tiring as doing the event itself.
