I played baseball my whole life....

And both of my brothers did, one in the braves organization and the other in independant leagues. But from my Little League coach, to Mike Paulicastro, to Rod Delmonico, to Mike Marshall of the Albany Colonie DiamondDogs, NONE of them had players fight each other. Also, neither one of my brothers had a coach do this. The worst thing any of us had to do would be to run for hours on end, the longest was almost 3 at the University of Arkansas, and that did the trick for us or any of my teammates. But trying to teach toughness this way may be the most ridiculous coaching tactic I've ever heard of....And i've coached too!

During your laps you had to hold hands with your opponent and scream "I love my boyfriend" upon the completion of each lap.

Homophobia is a great disciplinary tool for coaches.

Harvey Fierstein wrote this short piece for the New York Times shortly after the Imus flap.

Fights during practice:

Never cared for baseball, not violent enough for me as a kid. In football, if you disrupted practice by getting into a fight, you got to run the Oklahoma Drill against every lineman from the other side of the ball while your opponent did the same against all the linemen from your side of the ball. Frankly, I'd take the boxing gloves in heartbeat over that... but this was baseball after all. Those fella's are such gentlemen they drop their bats before charging the mound.
