Are you ready? It's time again for Clinton and Obama to answer some questions.

ABC News, the National Constitution Center and WPVI-TV will host a Democratic Presidential Candidate debate in Philadelphia on Wednesday, April 16. The live debate, which is scheduled to run 90 minutes, will be moderated by ABC News anchors Charles Gibson and George Stephanopoulos and will air from 8:00-10:00 p.m., ET/PT on the ABC Television Network.

I'm excited. I just can't wait to see how George Stephanopoulos will be as a moderator.

volatile

Both candidates will be..or maybe better put..
should be very cautious in this debate.

One could show a flash of temper.

Or make a gafe.

Which would cost them the nomination.

The race in Pa is very volatile..Clinton's lead
swings from +3 to +14 in recent polls.

She must win to stay in.Ditto for Indiania.

West Va & Ky are trending heavy for Clinton.

OTH,Obama can't afford to get beat bad in Pa &
stumble in Indiania.

NC & Ore are trending heavy for Obama.

To sum up

For Obama,a win in either Pa or Ind.

He's the nominee.

For Clinton,wins in Pa,Ind,West Va & Ky.

Keeps her in the race.

More than likely,in the debate, both will be cautious

No news will be made

But you never know.

He'll suck.

My sentiments exactly. I wonder if there will be any weirdness due to his being part of BC's White House.

BOTH moderators are awful!

It is a disgrace!!!

Rachel's picture

Told ya so. Although

Told ya so. Although Charlie Gibson was worse.

The entire thing was disgraceful, and not because of the performance of the candidates (although both of them should have said "enough of the bull already - let's talk important issues."

This was "gotcha" journalism at its worst. Let's focus on the items so important to our future like whether or not the candidates every met a Weatherman - and fail to even mention education, or energy, or civil liberties, or the Supreme Court, or...

Bah. You don't need a weatherman to see which way this wind blows.

I hope he drops the Bosnia Betty bomb. It's still the most pathetic lie told by a politician since Mission Accomplished.

Where did you see this? In most articles I found (AFP Canada News, LA Times/Bloomberg, and Scranton Times Tribune) they show Clinton still in the lead in Pa.

RCP Average today shows Clinton +6.7%

But to answer the question, I think, the Obama +3 is from Public Policy Polling.

This could change rapidly when more polls are added

Tonight's Debate or should I say Unjuried Trial

Is it my imagination or does tonight's debate appear to be a unjuried trial. It sure seems that both candidates are being GRILLED in a very unfair way.

BOTH moderators appear to have no respect for the candidates. They are MORE interested in attacking them and expecting an explanation as though the candidates have attacked them.

A debate is supposed to be an intelligent discussion back and forth of important issues and how they will handle those issues.

Does anyone agree?

Carole Borges's picture

I agree

This debate was a rehashing of the worst aspects of this campaign. It was non-informative and a non-event. It was all I could do to not groan out loud.

Anonymous's picture

huh

Liz is smart. Young has nothing to do but write dumb replys. Of course Hillary will win. She's smarter and yes, 1/2 of the nations Dem's want her to win. Maybe 1/2 want Obama, but unfortunately for NO GOOD REASON. They can never think of one, but that he is 'NEW and Change', and sadly has nothing to bring to the office.

I think Hillary supporters are starting to lose it.

The American people will decide this election as a group. Unless they are brain-dead, it won't be a George W. Bush clone.

The Democrat who is focusing most on the issues rather than shoveling stale swill will be the next president.

You guess who that is.

HC Soldier's picture

You've yet...

You guys have yet to say anything beyond normative statements.

Where's the real PROOF of anything you guys have said?

After watching the Debate, I agree that Charlie Gibson did a VERY good job at Mediating, restating questions, pursuing for an actual answer -- None of the word twisting that unfortunately DID happen in some instances (They tend to due to time constraints.)

And as for Mediating; Why have someone who will accept a lengthy speech on Health care when the question was about whether he or she agrees of Gun Bans? I think a little grilling works well: Forces the Debaters to finally answer "yes" or "no" (Clinton and Obama were both forced to give straight answers, which surprised me when they did, sometimes.)

But, I'm not Pro Gibson or anything. He just did a superb job.

bizgrrl's picture

I was glad they were

I was glad they were standing at podiums. Represented more as equals, a little further away from each other.

I see where it is being reported many places that this debate was a travesty. I really don't see how it was any worse than any of the other debates. Maybe it's just because Obama was on the defensive this time more so than Clinton?

Carole, I especially don't see how Clinton supporters are starting to lose it.

Carole Borges's picture

Here's one example of the tone they seem to have adapted lately

HILLARY 2008

NEVER EVER SNOB-AMA

Surfing around, I read a lot of these kinds of statements. TN Guerilla Women seem to go into a tizzy over anything they can latch onto.

"Well, isn't that just too bad for the Precious. And welcome to the club, Obamabots. The U.S. media is sick and deranged, but for some reason surviving the derangement is a presidential test. Last night Obama finally got a taste of the treatment that Hillary Rodham Clinton has long been accustomed to. The untested Prince failed miserably."

Their use of snotty little derogatory labels like "Prince" or "Precious" or "Messiah" are as elitist and warped as the language which has for generations demeaned women.

I feel like Clinton supporters are beginning to realize she is not going to get the nomination now and it is driving them crazy.

On the other hand Obama refused to play the game when asked about Hillary's Bosnia lie. He could have brought up the firing of her campaign starategist over his double dealings, but he didn't.

There are sites bashing Clinton and slopping around in swill, like suggesting she is having a lesbian affair with her aide and other outrageous statements, but these are whacko Hillary-haters rather than Obama supporters.

All I meant was I see and hear an increasing shrillness from Clinton supporters lately.

bizgrrl's picture

There is plenty of

There is plenty of shrillness to go around.

I have stopped going to certain web-site because of their contstant anti-Clinton sentiments. I have stopped listening to some radio shows due to their anti-Clinton sentiments. Randi Rhodes, previously an Air America talent, is a perfect example. I have stopped watching certain "news" shows, and I use the term news lightly, because of their anti-Clinton sentiments. Keith Olberman is a perfect example.

Their is plenty to go around. I think Obama supporters are getting nervous because Clinton is still a formidable candidate with considerable support. They wish she would just go away, but it doesn't work that way. There is a process. The process could still be in the works in August at the convention. It's happened before, it could happen again.

I hear this is not the worst Democratic primary. From what I understand when Teddy Kennedy decided to run against the incumbent, Jimmy Carter, it was pretty bad. I was definitely a voter then but do not remember the bruhaha. Guess I just ignored it since I was definitely going to vote for the incumbent.

R. Neal's picture

Whether or not anyone agrees

Whether or not anyone agrees with the tone and substance of the "debate" (cross-examination), it was a good look at how the candidates will handle the October onslaught of slime.

Of course Obama wanted to talk about issues instead of Rezko, Wright, and "bitterness". Trouble is, they have talked about the issues in the other twenty something debates and there's not a dime's worth of difference between their policy positions. Last night he was hit with new attacks that have come up since the last debate. Same thing with Clinton and Bosnian sniper fire. Judging from the attacks if nothing else, Clinton has done a better job of not stepping in dog poop over the last few weeks.

At any rate, both of them handled the attacks well. Clinton brought her "A" game for a change, and seemed better rested and ready. Obama seems to have adopted an old rule of blues playing that says when you play a wrong note you play it again so it sounds like you meant to play it the first time.

And while we can complain about the media dragging the Dem candidates through the mud, keep in mind that this is only a mild preview of what's to come and the GOP won't be pulling any punches.

bizgrrl's picture

One of my favorite

One of my favorite statements by Clinton in the debate:

She also said jokingly that she had hoped the Republicans would be so ashamed of their performance over the last eight years that they wouldn't run any candidate this time.

gonzone's picture

Debate Problem

The whole problem with this debate was that the moderators were bringing a Republican frame with Republican assumptions to bear with each question.

As a result we got no debate on any substantive issues but only attack/gotcha crap from a 3rd grader perspective. Mickey Mouse TV needs to grow up. We've got way too many serious issues to waste time with GOP framing of the Dem candidates.

"When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro."

Stick Thrower's picture

Yep.

The whole problem with this debate was that the moderators were bringing a Republican frame with Republican assumptions to bear with each question.

Yep. I suppose it's excusable since that's the frame Obama will have to face in October. However, it would have been a fantastic moment last night for all Democrats if Obama and Hillary had simply walked off the stage together after about an hour into the nonsense.

Average Guy's picture

My favorite part was on the

My favorite part was on the other channel. It was at the Radio-TV Correspondents Dinner last night. It was when Dick Cheney was telling jokes about Al Gore and the cameras caught House leader Steny Hoyer laughing.

Nothing stiffens my (I) spine like seeing the national Democrats in action.

I have noticed that too,

I have noticed that too, Carole. Not that they will care but I have quit visiting some sites I used to frequent simply because of such outrageous mudslinging. I wonder if any have noticed reductions in their traffic due to others being sick of their crap.

Of course there is the possibility that, for every one that leaves, there will be two that just eat up that kind of thing.

Nervouse..HELL YES I'm NERVOUSE!!!

I'm hoping for an upset in Pa. by Obama.

That would end it.

But Clinton must win & I believe she will.

For all you Clinton folks out there..

don't get all freaked out if Clinton wins by "only"
4-6% & the media/pro Obama bloggers try to spin it as a loss.

A Clinton win is a Clinton win.

If she wins & she should..we move to the 4th leg of
Clinton's must win tour...Indiana...May 6th.

If she wins Indiana..Clinton can win the nomination.

Clinton will also win West Va held May 13th.

I believe Obama will win in NC..May 6th.

Clinton wins Pa.,Indiana & West Va.

Obama wins NC.

A 3 outa 4 sweep for Clinton...

going into Oregon & Kentucky..May 20th.

Clinton is WAY..WAY..WAY ahead in Ky.

Not seen a poll from Oregon.

Returns from '72..'76..'80 Pa. primary

1972
HHH-35%
Wallace-21%
McGovern-20%

1976
Carter-37%
Scoop Jackson-25%
Udall-19%

1980
Kennedy-45.7%
Carter-45.4%

Signed..
Nervouse as hell Obama boy in the Fort

Stick Thrower's picture

What is there to be nervous about?

If Clinton wins by 20% in PA, IN, WV, KY, and Puerto Rico, she would still not overtake Obama's delegate lead. Obama will likely win OR, SD, MT, and NC handily, but even if Clinton wins those by 20% (not gonna happen), she'll still be behind.

delegate counter

As we've all known since February, the super delegates are ultimately going to pick the nominee.

You think it's ugly now?

bill young's picture

Dear Nervouse,

Dont give up.

Obama could pull upset in Pa.

2 polls..

Zogby..April 16-17
Clinton-47%
Obama-43%
Undecided-9%

Rasmussen..April 17th
Clinton-47%
Obama-44%
Undecided-9%

See ya'll Tuesday night

It's been just 6 weeks since the last primary vote
in Miss.

But in this election year it seams like eternity.

1.I believe for Obama or Clinton to nail this thing
down both need 2,208 delegates.

Thats majority with Fla./Mich included.

According to Real Clear Politics delegate count

Obama is 560 delegates shy of 2,208
Clinton is 701 delegates shy of 2,208.

2.If when the dust clears after the last primary day
& Obama or Clinton have not nailed the nomination down.

There will be a fight on seating Fla./Mich.

3.The first stop in that fight is the 186 member Credentials Committee.

Right now, there is no way of knowing what the Committee will do.

Not going to kick this dead horse anymore.

I'm going to do what a ton of folks in Philly
are going to do Saturday.

Get some cold beer & pull for the Flyers.
