Pileated Woodpecker, a male, I believe. Taken at Lake Ashby Park in Volusia Co. FL, which is an excellent county run park that we discovered by accident. This was the first time I've been able to get photos of one of these fellows. He came right up near us on the trail, making a lot of noise like maybe he was being all territorial and stuff.

Wonderful photograph, R. Neal. You make me want to start takin' picsures agin.
And I bet he was being territorial, birds tend to do that. Woodpeckers are also loud just because they can be.
I've been watching a mama robin or two preparing nests most of the week. And for about half an hour this afternoon I sat on the porch and listened to at least four different breeds talking back and forth. Very relaxing.

I'm impressed. These birds are around, but they hide from the camera really well. They peek out from the other side of the tree, and then duck back in a hurry.
Then they fly to another tree while making that distinctive call, which I interpret as raucous, mocking laughter (since they've once again eluded my viewfinder).

I've had one chance to shoot a pileated from that distance, and some asshole came up behind me in a diesel flare-side, yelling, "WHATCHOO TAKIN' PITCHERS OF???"

I used to hear the prehistoric sound of pileateds calling in Lakemoor Hills years ago, but they only came through on rare occasions. Now and then I'd catch a flash of wing and see that fabulous crest. Once or twice, I saw on a tree, but I never even reached my camera, much less got off a shot.

I miss Florida sometimes. That little bromeliad growing on the tree reminds me of how different the ecology is from Tennessee.

Nice shot.

... which makes it that much harder to get a good shot! I've been stalking them for years and have yet to get such a good picture! Wonderful!
Woodpecker huh? Since when did birds start gettin' prosthetics? :~)
The more I look at the photograph, the more admiration I have for both the Pileated Woodpecker and Bubba.
Thanks, again.
