The Bald Eagle was back at the same spot at the Merritt Island NWR Wednesday. I managed to get a little closer for some better shots. See more from the series after the jump...

Note: All taken with a 400mm lens + 1.4 extender, ISO 160 and 100, F8, 1/800 and 1/500, and cropped. Here's a full frame:

I heard those things taste a little like spotted owl?

Nice shots, but you are going to need a longer lens if you are going to keep shooting birds. Perhaps one of those expensive beige ones?

Awesome shots

Thanks for the full frame perspective. So that's one secret, huh? The digital zoom relies on every one of them-there pixels to maintain clarity and detail from that far out. Still it's amazing that it can capture that much information.

It's not digital zoom per se (DSLRs don't have that feature). Just carving out the pixels you want, or carving away the pixels you don't want. The full frame is 4288 X 2848 (which is why the raw files for each image are huge - 10MB to 12MB each, compressed) and the crops are around 1200 X 1000 downsized to 640 X 512 (8 X 10 aspect) for the web. So the secret in this case is lots of resolution.

Gotcha. Lots of pixels,

Gotcha. Lots of pixels, lots of data. That's kind of the idea I had, except I guess "digital zoom" is just something else.

Is the compression lossy?
