Betty, Cindy McCain is not the story. c'mon. that's what you take from this?
The affair is not the issue. For any telecom lobbyist to be able to get so close to a sitting Senator -- especially when you look at his votes to protect the telecom industry. There's your story.

Is it curious that the Times endorsed McCain even as it was working on this story? Or would the people doing that not necessarily know or care that it was in the pipeline?

NYT is being accused of running the story because The New Republic is coming with a story about why they spiked it. They've been sitting on this for months, so it's unlikely that the editorial page people were unaware of it. Limbaugh is accusing them of holding until McCain was assured the nomination.
Perhaps Howard Fineman was on to something last night when he said Cindy McCain would be a factor in this campaign.

I'd rather be cycling.
First salvo in the Rove smear campaign.
McCain becomes unelectable by Summer. Huckabee has already released his delegates. They seat a "proper" candidate at the convention.
Note: I don't know if the GOP can do this or not, by their rules and I don't care to research it.

Doug, that was a sarcastic reference to a thread that got pretty hot here last night.
Of course the fact that the woman in question is a telecom lobbyist is the real issue for Mr. McCain Feingold.

The issue is how much Viagra did McCockroach have to swallow to perform such an act at his age?
Everyone should keep in mind that this is immorality and immorality is something Republican voters admire. Obviously.

Many conservatives would consider this a dream scenario...

Like Limbaugh cares. To hear that fat bastard talk he wishes that McCain hadn't survived the Hanoi Hilton. This is pure Rove.
The real story is that McCain (campaign financing reformer) was owned by that lobbying firm.

Here's the TNR story. It's very good. I'm going to read the related links, too -- esp the John Judis story. He's a terrific writer/reporter.
