WBIR

His childish act: sending his wife to pay their property tax bill with $1,700 in golden Sacagawea Dollars. [..] On several of the $25 coin rolls, the Fields wrote a message aimed directly at the county mayor, saying "For Ragsdale Tip Money."

Why is that childish? That seems to be a perfectly fine protest of the actions of Mike Ragsdale. What is childish is a Mayor who makes over $210,00 a year charging meals in Knoxville to the taxpayers.

Yes it was silly!! But so is paying a mayor a $20,000 car allowance for a county provided and maintained vehicle. It must take a lot of car fresheners for that Tahoe. AS for the News my name and phone # was clearly printed on the rolls of coins!

Is it not the job of the trustees office to collect the money? The money came straight from the bank already rolled. I am sure Sisk found away to the bank!!

I love silly.

Especially when it makes a point. Maybe all Knox County taxpayers should pay their wheel tax in pennies and call themselves the "Penny Pinchers". What is that saying... "Mind your pennies and the dollars take care of themselves"? Surely Knox Count government isn't minding its pennies and certainly the dollars are not taking care of themselves.

Oh and we could have a Doberman Pinscher as our mascot. OMG, this sounds like a Lumpy idea!

It Coulda Been Worse

and far funnier.

Haddock tendered the cow in payment of the income tax, but the Collector refused “objecting that it would be difficult or even impossible to pay the cow into the bank.” To this, Haddock “politely” suggested that the Collector could simply “endorse the cow to any third party to whom he owed money, adding that there must be many persons in that category.

Y'all need to cut these good

Y'all need to cut these good folks some slack.
They've been reamed by the county and not even kissed. The Fields family lives at the base of a hill that is being (poorly) developed. They've been flooded and eroded by the runoff from that development, and have had a helluva time getting the county to enforce its own regs. I'd say they're entitled to let off a little steam.

Heh. Brian and Angie Fields

Heh. Brian and Angie Fields were active in lobbying for better stormwater regulations last year after a subdivision development near their house started shedding muddy water onto their land during rains. They had county engineering and several county officials out to see the violation first hand, but the county would not even force the developer to erect a silt fence.

I'm sure paying property tax is especially frustrating when you've tried and failed to get simple enforcement of the law.

I admire the Fields. I think their idea was clever and made a great point!

Nothing childish about it.

Nothing childish about it. There are sooo many citizens of Knox County that are fed up to the gills with the actions of our county government. Sometimes, you have to do something a little extreme to get a point across. I feel badly for what this couple has been through. But, I'd still find the action warranted if it was done by someone without such a background of transgressions by the county.

Poor clerks indeed. If our elected officials can take guests out for lobster on the taxpayers dime, and let them haul out extra crustaceans in to-go boxes, they can transport a few rolls of coins to the bank. If they can pick up case upon case of booze for the multitude of hosted functions, paid for from semi-hidden hospitality accounts and from funds solicited from private donors who didn't know what it was being used for, they can haul a few coins to the bank. If they can sanction allowing people on the county payroll time off to cart campaign signs all over the area, they can haul a few coins to the bank. I think Ragsdale should push the wheelbarrow himself, except I'd be afraid it would inspire a new form of wheel tax. Take out his expenses, his lunch, his dry cleaning, and other incidentals he might incur in the walk to the bank, and there probably wouldn't be anything left. Better to just put the change in another hidden account to be used for tipping the pizza delivery.

Yup. Ragsdale didn't get one bit inconvenienced or stressed by the tax paying in coins. The only people who did were the regular county employees.

One presumed they were also somewhat amused.

If they won't follow them, you shouldn't either.

That clearing equipment gets expensive when it has to be replaced. It is possible to render such a project No Longer Worth the Investment should those in office prove to be corrupt and unwilling to enforce the law.

Thanks Betty,
I am the first to admit it was childish, but I don't think it was "silly" I just hope the people up town got the message and see what is going on and make some changes. Plus Ang doesn't like people saying "I made her go alone" I wish she would have waited on me, but she is a trooper to put up with me and my aggravation toward the government. I just wanted to thank you.

Self-described...

Again, to be clear--we're not sticking any unwanted labels on anyone over there. In his interview, Brian Fields said he'd seen how childish elected officials acted, and he decided to go for a bit of it himself.

--"All of our elected officials pretty much act childish," he said. "I figured I would do a little bit, too."-- is the quote preceding your selection.

Paying In Dollar Coins

How would I feel if I had to count it and transport it?

If it were my JOB, what I'm PAID to do, I'd do it!

Childish? Nope.

Funny as Hell? Yes.

Back when KUB required deposits to establish service (and wouldn't take letters-of-credit from out-of-state utility providers), I paid my hook-up
deposit in PENNIES.

The lady refused to take it, whereupon I quoted the old "legal tender for all debts public and private" line.

She snorted.
She muttered under her breath.

But she DID it.

After all, it was her JOB.

Shades of Scrooge McDuck

The only thing that might have been funnier was bringing the gold (color) coins in bags with dollar signs on the outside. This whole thing is great theatre.
