WBIR: Scott Moore resigns as county commission chairman

Knox County Commissioner Scott Moore resigned his post as chairman of that body Wednesday afternoon.

KNS: Moore resigns as County Commission chairman; Strickland to serve

"Yesterday in the election we seen many changes in Knox County government," Moore said.

"I'm going to step down as Knox County Commission chairman. It's been a privilege to serve the last three years.

"It's time for somebody else to take over."

Vice Chairman Thomas "Tank" Strickland took over duties as chairman.

We "seen" 'em way before he "seen" 'em, huh?

One down One to go...

Scott Moore done... now we turn our focus to Ragsdale and the misappropriation of government funds in his office...

Where are all of the audits of Ragsdale and his executive office staff???

Tamara Shepherd's picture

Status of audits

I phoned Walls' office a week or two back to ask about this, Joe. The woman I spoke with said that the p-card audit was completed and was being reviewed by comptroller's staff in Nashville then. She said the audit of the community grants department was barely begun, but that it would be next.

I asked when the p-card audit would be released to the public, but she said she couldn't say. She said the mayor and his staff would be provided an opportunity to review it first.

I acknowledge that ownership

I acknowledge that ownership does permit censorship - but I challenge the KnoxViews position of denying me the option of posting a new thread. The system only allows me to comment. I am a Knox county citizen and any opinion I have should be allowed to be expressed and debated.

KnoxViews management is scared of contrary views...

SammySkull's picture

I think

You could start with a blog perhaps as many other people have done. However, I don't think that Randy is going to let you post here just because you think you should be able to. I don't think it's a point of being scared of contrary views so much as the up front acknowledgment that this is a progressive/liberal site, though you may not have noticed that.

"Nothing Moore"

Why can we not see how much the commissioners are paid online anywhere? Try it and see even the frequently asked questions doesn't give this.
Moore will be a commissioner til 2010.
It seemed a retlitory move and "nothing moore."

rikki's picture

thank you, Scoobie

This is a good move by Moore. It shows respect for the voters and will help commission make a cleaner transition out of the ignore-term-limits era. Appointments are going to be difficult, and fresh leadership will bring a new approach.

Commission must set sensible ground rules for the appointment process. The order of appointments and swearings in should be deliberated and resolved ahead of time.

volzfan59's picture

Question???

How can I find out if Moore and Pinkston are term limited? Does anyone here know? I know Moore stepped down as Chairman, but he will be on Commission until 2010 so really what did we gain? It's not like he won't be voting.

Factchecker's picture

Tell it to Instapudd or the Truth Squat

RedDog's no newbie here. He knows:

"KnoxViews is a progressive (i.e. "liberal") community space for citizens of Knoxville, the surrounding community, from around Tennessee, or anywhere else to meet, organize, and discuss news, politics, events, and issues of interest to progressives everywhere.

This is a partisan website that leans Democrat. Opposing viewpoint is welcome in discussions, but is not appropriate for front page blog entries. Non-partisan blog posts about local government and other issues are appropriate and welcome."

Just wants to make people think he's being oppressed.

Audits and Moore stuff

Regarding the audits why should Ragsdale be allowed to review the audit prior to it being released... these are public funds aka my tax dollars... the audit should be released to everyone at the same time...

Moore stuff... resigning from the commission chair basically neuters Scott Moore... he will not be effective as a commissioner to the voters in his district...

Scoobie for County Mayor - 2010

Got to think that Scoobie has a plan up his sleeve, perhaps it's Scoobie for County Mayor in 2010. The field will be much, much lighter in 2010 and not nearly as crowded for that spot. In my opinion, he's not through with politics yet, although the voting public may be through with him.

There are still some vestiges of the entrenched life on the public payroll that need to be purged in the August election.

Scoobie's move to get out of the way is a very smart move as now the public clammor for accountability will go directly to other commission members/chairman who have not been asking for complete accountability and exposure of fraud, waste, and abuse. In that context, if those commission members are not part of the solution, then they will be viewed as part of the problem.

Rachel's picture

Stranger things have

Stranger things have happened, but based on Scoobie's showing in the County Clerk race I think he's pretty much toast for county wide office.

Tamara Shepherd's picture

Volz & Joe:

Volz, Moore first ran in 2002, so, yes, he's in his second term now and CAN'T RUN again in 2010.

Pinkston was originally appointed following the death of his brother, Howard, sometime prior to 2006. Pinkston then ran for his first full term in 2006, so, no, he isn't term-limited and he CAN RUN again in 2010.

Joe, it's SOP for auditors to run their final copy by the management of the entity being audited *before* releasing it more widely. (Remember the stink that arose when Walls failed to do that with that first "draft" audit of travel allowances? That's why the stink, that Walls did something pretty unprofessional in releasing a "draft" Ragsdale's office hadn't reviewed.)

Even if Ragsdale's office should object to any of the findings, the auditors are under no compulsion to change anything in their report.

Especially now that the comptroller's office is working with Walls, I think we can depend on getting the whole truth from these audits.

Joe Taylor's picture

Ragsdale's Office...

I just do not trust anything coming from, leaking from, or oozing from Suite 615 of the City County Building aka Ragsdale Office...

There are more misdeeds (financially and otherwise) happening in that office than the entire County Commission appointment process put together...

Media Grammar Nannies

Media Grammar Nannies II:

"Yesterday in the election we (saw) many changes in Knox County government," Moore said as commissioners met to set the agenda for this month's commission meeting.

Thanks Tamara....

Thanks for the information. For some reason I thought that Pinkston was term limited also. I must have confused him with his brother.

Now, if we can just dump the Lump in our district in 2010.

Mr.Chairman

My good friend Tank Strickland would make a great chairman.

I hope he can get the votes.

Bird_dog's picture

what exactly are the qualities of a great chairman?

Bill, I assume you are serious, and maybe Tank is the best of the sitting commissioners, but why do you think he will be great? I have watched him on CTV and he hardly says a word. I have been in small-group meetings with him where we were all taking valuable time away from work, and he read the Metro Pulse. What exactly is his job with the city? Seriously.

to be fair betty

I do make choices in primaries

I supported Obama,Sam & Cortney & was proud to do it.

In the general I will always go with the Democrat.

I will support Amy & if Clinton wins I'll get behind her.

Tony's a fine commissioner & a good man.

But I've known Tank for years & count him as a friend.

Like the memo from mangement said..dont get down & dirty.

Tony & Tank are the good guys.

I'm for Tank...not against Tony.
