Now what? Commission will be considering appointments. My preference is for Commission to appoint caretakers, and I understand that my August opponent, Ed Shouse, told the News-Sentinel he won't be seeking the appointment either. I'm a little anxious as to who they might select (we want good representation for the Fourth- we've waited too long!!), but going outside of me and Ed is probably best for everyone in the long run.

....

The same issues for the Fourth exist in the 4-A appointment. Finbarr said he won't seek the appointment. I don't know about Ruthie. But Commission may be stuck with a lot of top choices taking themselves out of consideration, the exact point I made in November when they voted (wrongly, I argued then) to delay the appointments until February.

Now that yesterday is

Now that yesterday is history, you may be surprised at how quickly some of those "non-seekers" may change their mind. I guess that most will no longer see the benefit of positioning themselves against the establishment and instead will see the benefit of taking the position now so that they can "move forward with the business of re-establishing ethical and open government". You know, moving forward with creating better schools, better jobs, taking care of seniors, etc. Not to mention the appeal of being able to run with the power of the incumbency for this new age government...

NorthKnox's picture

I don't think many, if any

I don't think many, if any will change their minds. In this climate, it's not just the voters that are on their backs, but the media more than ever, and I can tell you that the media has kept a close tally of who said they will or will not seek an appointment. So suffice it to say that anyone who goes back on an earlier no-appointment policy will be doomed in the general election.

There are at least two people who are seeking/ willing to accept an appointment. They are 2nd district candidate Chuck Williams (he only got 5% of the vote). He will actively seek the appointment.

Also, Amy Vandergriff says she will accept an appointment, because she thinks people have seen what she's about, and is not like the Good 'ol Boys in Knox County Government. I don't know if that's the best policy, especially with Foster Arnett as her challenger, he'll eat that up in the general campaign.

Tamara Shepherd's picture

From among primary losers (not linked to 1/31)?

What would be ideal, I think, is for some of those folks who were bumped in the primary (but who were NOT linked to Black Wednesday) to now step forward as sincere, unambitious "caretakers" until September.

Steve, you know these folks better than most of us do. Do you not see that happening with any who lost in the primary?

reform4's picture

I've talked to a few..

.. they are hesitant, but I think could be talked into it. On the other hand, I have no idea what Commission overall is thinking. I think R. Larry will push caretakers, Pinkston indicated he would pick the primary winner (and he will be disappointed when he finds out many will decline). Those are the only indications I have seen. Obviously, I don't spend any time lobbying commission. :)

Tamara Shepherd's picture

Others?

That's gracious (and probably prudent) of Ruthie, but what of Davis, Daniels, Wojnar, Brummit, or Smelcher?

Of these, I know only Elaine Davis, who would be my first choice, of course.

Since commission chose to wait until after the primary, tho, to know the "will of the people," I guess the fairest approach would be to first court the primary loser getting the largest percentage of total votes among all (for both parties) votes cast?

Tamara Shepherd's picture

Suggested qualifiers

I said: "...the fairest approach would be to first court the primary loser getting the largest percentage of total votes among all (for both parties) votes cast?"

Well, let me qualify that suggestion, as I see it would produce the earnest, yet compromised, Matthew Jones as the first former candidate to be courted in my Sixth District. This spring, he would be yet another county employee in a position to vote on his own department's budget.

With all due regard for the disagreement from some folks here that we shouldn't disallow county employees from service on commission, I really think the primary produced evidence that most folks support barring them.

Then maybe the approach commissioners should take is to first court the primary loser getting the largest percentage of total votes among all (for both parties) votes cast, PROVIDED that person was not part of Black Wednesday, and PROVIDED that person is not a county employee?

reform4's picture

I agree...

the message of the voters regarding county employees should take precedence. In my blog, I brought up the inherent conflict of interest about a lame-duck county employee voting on the budget. We can't let that happen!

What would Scoobie do?

As we all know, the appointments will be made by the existing eleven commissioners. Will Scoobie, Lumpy, Pinkston, and Ivan continue to try to get their buddies appointed? You bet they will. And if they can get Tramel and Bolus to sit in those seats (and others), they can continue keep the county in turmoil for another 6 months with their own agenda. What have they got to loose at this point? They have little control over what will happen in August now so this is their final dance. Granted they are just 4 votes, but how will Tank, Craig, and Our Larry vote? All the boys need are two more votes...

We need a strong contender in the second district also to oppose Bolus in the appointment process.

After the appointments would be a good time to vote for a new Commission Chairperson!

Also, if Phil Ballard wins at property assessor, the new commission will be appointing his replacement on commission.

RayCapps's picture

Dr Briggs in 5C:

Dr Briggs in District 5C is seeking the appointment. In the races where there is either no opposition or simply futile opposition (Albert Baah in District 1, for example) it might make sense to go ahead and take the office now in advance of budget time. In more contested elections, it's probably neither appropriate nor advisable to seek an appointment.

I agree Henley-Vandergriff would be making a huge misake if she was to seek or accept the appointment to the clerk's office. Although, I do admit it would be pretty funny for Stooksbury to find himself reporting to her for a few months, especially considering he's the one who fired her in the first place.

I do, however, think it would be both acceptable and helpful for the winners in each of the contested primaries to suggest an appropriate caretaker for the office. Right now, they're probably more closely dialed into the moods and desires of the people in their districts (especially in the 4th) and could put forward some good suggestions to warm up the seats.

On a barely related note, although I live in district 5, I grew up in district 2 and am slightly concerned about the amount of hostility between the Broyles/Piper camps. I'd hate for Cortney to withold her support and possibly give Bolus a fighting chance to win the August election. Any chance of these two metaphorically kissing and making up? Maybe Cortney could be persuaded to put herself forward for consideration for the appointment as the Democratic Primary runner-up, possibly even with Amy's full support?

Lisa Starbuck's picture

Reconcilliation

I can't speak for Cortney, but I do believe she will support Amy and try to heal any wounds, both for party unity and to beat Bolus in the general election.

At her election return event last night for her supporters, Cortney's concession speech gave credit to Amy for running a good campaign and said she thought Amy would do a good job for the 2nd District.

So, no, I don't think Cortney will withhold support from Amy. As far as an appointment, I have no idea if Cortney would be interested, but I'd certainly rather see her than Bolus.

I had a very long post typed up with the ugly details. Those that know me well know that it's not easy for me to be professional and hold my tongue, but I will continue to.

I will say that Cortney Piper has some fences to mend before there can be any kissing or making up. However, she needs to distance herself from some of the people she's been listening to first.

Amy did everything possible to stay above the mud-slinging. She asked me to shut the hell up before I cost her votes on a few occasions and we both urged her supporters to stay positive as well. Were we perfect? No. I'm too big an asshole to be nice all the time. But we don't have anything to apologize for.

knoxrebel's picture

Don Daugherty Paul, yes,

Don Daugherty

Paul, yes, please spare us the "ugly" details. You are Amy's campaign mgr, and so, after winning a hard-fought primary, it is disconcerting to me to see you hinting at something sinister about Piper. Now is not the time to attack Cortney or her supporters. You have repeatedly attempted to drag me into the 2nd District race and I have "held my tongue", but you aren't doing Amy any favors by a post such as this, especially if you think there's healing to be done in the 2nd. I received a number of complaints regarding this race, many of them concerning your candidate, whether the were complaints about Mark Harmon pressuring folks, the "taste of the 2nd District" event that listed businesses as supporting Amy when they actually thought they were promoting their businesses, and a litany of other incidents. You are aware of all of those incidents, and we do not need to re-hash them here, especially the day after the election.

There are alot of disappointed folks over in the 2nd, about 1500 of them, and we need to make an effort to heal old wounds there, not manufacture new ones. I do not believe Amy can win if Piper's supporters do not, for the most part, vote for her. So, it behooves you to not get on a blog and hint at accusations and threats against her and her supporters.

All of this said, I am not going to stand idly by and read a post that threatens to spew venom in either Piper's direction or my own. The next time you insist on attacking someone, instead of picking up the phone and calling reporter, call me.

jbr's picture

Well let's just not leave

Well let's just not leave any possibility of Bolus getting appointed or elected. And in the future anyone else of that ilk chosen by whomever works behind the scenes to get that sort of candidate elected.

If Piper is a good candidate, in my mind MPC needs some serious cleansing and so does the Industrial Development Board (if it should even exist) and probably some other entities I don't know about. So whatever good people did not make it thru primaries, they could be considered for those vacancies that will hopefully come soon.

Slight fears are getting stronger

I had the feeling the tough contest would leave some bad blood behind. The 2nd district doesn't need any sore losers or sore winners, either, for that matter. Knox County does not need Bolus sitting on commission, and it'll take the combined effort of both Broyles and Piper supporters to overcome all the sherriff's faction and developer's dollars bound to come flowing his way. He's the last Friend of Tim still in the race. Any idea of what that means in terms of money and press? Lots of folks might have won in this primary in spite of the dollar disadvantages, but they were helped by the non-stop free publicity provided by the continuing antics of the commission. I'd hate to count purely on that come August. So bury the hatchet already!

Bolus

If all the kings horses and all the kings money did not get a seat in the chamber for Tramel and Cate (and Scoobie for that matter), why do they think it would work for the weakly Bolus? If I were a developer or a part of sheriff's faction, I would not waste my time or money on him.

But there will still be an important campaign by Broyles to win the seat. I just don't think that Bolus will be that tough to beat. His indefensible testimony on the witness stand, did not show up at any recent forum, has not replied to any candidate summary done by the media... one would wonder if he is really serious about running for this seat. Heck, one neighborhood group returned his check from his discretionary fund.

Nope, sorry, can't let it go. Asshole mode on.

I don't have a problem with Cortney, I have a problem with you. I have a problem with the supposedly neutral party Chairman recruiting and training a campaign manager for one side of a primary race. I have a problem with you spreading a nasty and sexist rumor about Amy going braless on some fundraising meetings and then ask us to sign an ethics pledge because Amy supposedly called Cortney "Billy's blonde".

I have a problem with Bernice Curtis mailing Amy's postcard back to her after it's been ripped into little pieces with a note saying "keep your trash to yourself". I have a problem with her telling an Amy supporter at early voting that Amy is a "liar" when this person is on their way inside to vote.

I have a problem with you obstructing our access to state voter data with the same "abandoned the democratic party" crap that later appeared on Cortney's flyer.

I have a problem with a certain "reporter", and Cortney supporter, telling Amy that she was exaggerating her involvement in her family's small business and that she didn't qualify as a businesswoman.

And that's not the half of it.

Yesterday was a satisfying victory. Not because I don't like Cortney, but because her supporters don't like Amy (or me, or Mark Harmon, or Jim Gray).

And again, I'm confident that 99.99% of Cortney's supporters aren't like you, or your special friends.

I voted for Amy yesterday,

I voted for Amy yesterday, but ONLY because Cortney was supported by Billy Tindell (the term-limited commissioner who ran for office and won anyway, creating a mess with the hole he left on Black Wednesday indirectly causing a Repub to get the seat only because he wouldn't support the person who challenged his illegal candidacy to begin with).

Well, that's not entirely true. I also voted for Amy because of the negative mailer I got from Cortney.

At the polls, however, there were two women at the sign-in tables and one young man standing beside them. The young man was talking about how he had used to work on Amy's earlier campaign, and both ladies start lambasting her for "losing the East Town voting site". The man said, "Well, that's the way the story is being passed around," but the women replied as if Amy had INTENTIONALLY shut that site down to attack our democracy. Regardless of the facts, there was considerable negativity being directed at Amy. It made me think that the powers-that-be didn't want her in, which made her candidacy all the more attractive to me as a self-proclaimed independent. As I left the table, the young man apologized to me and said that he hoped I would not allow their discussion I had overheard to influence me. I said I had already made my mind up. The two ladies said nothing in the way of apologizing for their obvious slanted remarks.

...

This morning, I asked a neighbor who she had voted for in the local race, and she said she had voted for Amy. I asked why, and she said it was only because she had received mail with her name hand-written on the envelope/letter and with a hand-written (?) signature from Amy, and it was so personal and positive it was the only local race she decided to vote in.

...

I just post this to say that the in-party Broyles-Piper bickering here and elsewhere IS noticed by those of us who usually vote Democrat but do not officially belong to the Knox County Democratic Party.

Back to the topic of the thread...

Thanks, Logan, for your willingness to take on what will probably be a thankless job as a "caretaker" in the fourth.

Being in the sixth myself, I can't say that I learned much about your recent candidacy--there were too many candidates I actually got the chance to vote for to study those for whom I couldn't--but, yeah, we need some folks to step up, county wide.

ForaProgressiveKnoxville's picture

Thank you Tamara

As for my candidacy, that is one regret I have in all of this. I started contemplating running back in September but truly didn't fully vest myself into it until December. But in just over 40 days of campaiging, in between Christmas and New Years, while raising $2000, I feel proud to say that I was still able to obtain 11% of the vote. But, like I have said, this is my first race and at 29 years of age, it will not be my last.

Thank you again Tamara!

I vote at the same precinct, and I found that young man to be obnoxious by talking in a bossy manner and, I thought, being rude to the two women. It's was probably just me, so I didn't say anything but when he started trying to tell me why I had to mark my party of choice he got one of my teacher looks that says "Don't irritate me anymore." If I'd heard him talking about once working for a candidate who was on the ballot, I would have probably gone off on him. I would see that as campaigning for someone, which election workers are not supposed to do.

I voted for Amy because she listened to what my concerns were regarding county needs. She asked me what I thought was important, and she took on Billy Tindell when no body else was willing to do so. That said a lot to me.

I never heard from the Piper campaign, not once.

Dear Friends

Dear Friends,

Yesterday was a very exciting day, and everyone who worked hard to bring change to Knox County government should be proud of their efforts.

I had a fabulous time last night celebrating with friends and family. Today my husband and I took the day off and actually went out to lunch (in a real restaurant, without kids!). Then I took a long and much-needed nap. It was disappointing to wake up and find this garbage on KnoxViews.

I have indeed been the target of some ugly tactics and often humorous efforts to smear my character (the braless one is my favorite – as a nursing mom, I can’t even go to bed without a bra, much less downtown!), but I have discovered that very few people pay any attention to that kind of drivel. I have been accused of so many questionable and downright ridiculous things over the past two years, that I have learned to simply laugh them off.

In my opinion this all boils down to the long-standing rift in the local Democratic party between the conservatives and the progressives (sometimes referred to as the Paleodems and the Deaniacs), not to Cortney and me. And the behavior displayed here by two people who should know better is why we can’t heal that rift. Shame on you both. It is also why there are so many Democrats in Knox County who choose not to be involved in the local party.

I spent the entire day yesterday at Inskip Elementary School, where Wards 37 & 38 vote. I spent the day with Billy Tindell and Jim Jennings (both supporters of Cortney’s), and Chuck and Angie Bolus. I personally had a very good time, and enjoyed their company. Angie kept us supplied with coffee and my dad brought us all sandwiches. Workers from other campaigns came and went over the course of the day, and we enjoyed having them there as well.

My husband spent his day at Central UMC (Ward 11) and Belle Morris School (Ward 16S) where he had a great time with Rick Mallory (I’m not exactly sure which Mallory was Cortney’s manager – Judith or Rick). He and Rick had a lot to discuss beyond the election, and he had a fabulous time. He also spent some time with Cortney, and enjoyed her company as well. I had a great time talking to Rick at the Urban Bar last night. In fact, we are expecting Rick, and hopefully Judith as well, to join us on at least one of our summer camping trips this year.

The bottom line is that there was no ugly behavior yesterday from the people most directly involved and affected; in fact, it was quite the opposite. And although I am disappointed that Corntey sent out that nasty mailer during her campaign, there have been no cross or ugly words between her and me at all. All the venom and lies have come from those on the outside, those who have drawn battle lines between the conservatives and the progressives in the local party (or those who benefit from that rift) not from Cortney or me. In fact, when Cortney’s campaign first got underway, I was seeking her advice on swimming lessons for my 6 year old and inviting her to carpool to PWC meetings. Now that this race is over, I hope to still get some advice from her as Aidyn still has not learned to swim.

What we need in Knox County is not just a new way of conducting our county’s business, but a new way of conducting campaigns and politics in general. I intend to win the election in August. I intend to do so with a clean, positive, open campaign, and I intend to be on good terms with my opponent throughout (my husband and I have already invited Chuck and Angie Bolus to dinner, in an effort to head off any ugliness that other people may try to start). After the election, I intend to work as hard as I possibly can to restore some dignity and honor to our local government, and to do the absolute best job I can for the citizens of Knox County.

This weekend we are celebrating my dad’s 70th birthday, his mother’s 95th birthday, and my daughter’s 2nd birthday. I am in charge of the cakes, and intend to spend the next two days in the kitchen with my daughters, creating some fun memories and interesting cakes. I will not be back on KnoxViews until next week, and I will not be taking calls or emails from anyone who wants to perpetuate this nonsense. I have more important and satisfying things to do this weekend – and in the future.

Thanks again to everyone who has supported my campaign with time, money, energy, and good wishes. I look forward to the next race, and I welcome the help of anyone who wants to make a difference in Knox County and who shares my commitment to running an up-front, positive campaign for change!

Speaking of appointments...

Political Knoxville has begun the process of compiling information on prospective appointees, collecting the 5 resumes that were delivered today to the Knox County Commission's office. Profiles include links to those resumes, as well as contact information for the appointees and direct links for readers to email their commissioners about the candidates.

Profiles are easily accessible via the "Appointees" menu item in the main navmenu at politicalknoxville.com - so if anyone knows someone who's going to get in the mix, have them send us their information so we can get it properly posted for all to see.
