New Event... City of Knoville Dog Parade
Submitted by Bill Lyons on Mon, 2008/01/14 - 6:34pm.
Sorry to put two announcements here in one day but I know a lot of folks are dog lovers. This new event that is being held in conjunction with the city's planned new downtown dog park. There is a registration form and new logo to be found at...
January 14, 2008 - Be a part of Knoxville's first ever "Mardi Paws Parade" - a costume parade for dogs and their owners through downtown Knoxville. The parade starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2 and will begin in Market Square and end at the future site of the city's new downtown dog park on the southeastern corner of Summit Hill Drive and Central Avenue.
This event is being presented by PetSafe Village and Invisible Fence Brand and produced by the City of Knoxville. It is designed to raise awareness of the city's new downtown dog park and proceeds from the event will go to support animal adoption efforts of the Young-Williams Animal Center.
Registrants will receive a doggie goody bag and a royal court will be selected for the best dressed. Grooming and vaccination stations will be on site, as well as food vendors (including gourmet dog treats). Participants may purchase Mardi Paws Parade dog shirts or photos of their favorite pets in front of a Mardi Paws background.
Early registration is $5 and ends January 26, 2008. Late registration and day of parade registration is $8. As required by law, all dogs must be leashed and owners are required to clean up any dog waste.

Hello- I just wanted to bring to your attention that our organization has a Federal Trademark on "Mardi Paws" since 1999. We are a volunteer group trying to make a difference in our community and we have found the licensing of our event to be a very effective fundraiser. We certainly mean no ill will, but your trademark is only good if you protect it. Please contact us for clarification. Thank you.

Thanks for the information. Who'd of thunk it but one can never, well rarely, go wrong by including Google(TM) in all aspects of decision-making. I sense a another meeting!

I don't know if they charge money, but it might be a kind of cultural connection to affiliate with another city that loves dogs. They seem to have a lot of resources and some great pics on their pages.
We could of course call it "Arfs in the Parks: Knoxville's Mardi Gras Dog Parade". It's not copyrighted as a trademark. I made up "Arfs in the Parks" when I lived in Hollywood Fl and was trying to organize a dog park there.
Some small attribution might be nice but, feel free to use the name "Mardi Growl Parade" as I have not trademarked it even though it is the product of my mind.

update: Apparently mine is not the first mind to come up with such a thing. I did not see a trademark but I did not do an extensive search.
(And people or their lawyers are apparently busy googling. I got an e-mail yesterday regarding another trademark infringement in a post by someone else from months ago. Must be that time of year or something.)

Thanks Tess, for the suggestions, but as it turns out we were pretty impressed with Cafkia's thinking on this one. DNB just put it over the top. Mardi Growl has indeed been used by a lot of folks, and, as that might imply, has not been trademarked. So "Mardi Growl" it is! You are hearing it first right here. It will be the Mardi Growl Dog Parade. Thanks for your patience and creativity. I hope this is a fun event that helps the Young-Williams Animal Center with their very important work.

I agree with Tess, with all the negativity swirling around dogs in public places, it seems a bit encouraging to label something a "Growl". We dog owners are trying to create an image of happy puppies, not aggressiveness.

The Dog costume parade is in the theme of Mardi Gras, which takes place that week. And dogs do have fur coats and can dress up in warm shirts for the event without embarrassment. Funny about the reaction to "Growl." I immediately liked it, as did some other, as a neat play on words and sounds at the intersection of dogs and Mardi Gras.
Some people in our informal poll yesterday agreed with you that it was negative.. growling rather than smiling, drooling, whatever. I guess our thinking was that anyone who has a dog and who might consider coming is aware of dog personalities; some dogs, like humans, tend to find their comfort zone in growl mode, or, even if otherwise quite pleasant, occasionally give in to the snarling angels of their nature. In short, the thought is that the name should not dissuade potential participants and their owners, but rather will help provide a unique identity to the event. On the other hand, cold rainy weather might so we can keep our fingers and claws crossed.
Why have a dog walk (costume parade) in the middle of winter? Why give it a name, Mardi Growl, with a negative connotation?

Well, guys, for the second time it has made it to the interwebs and I think we had better stick with Mardi Growl. Just to go out on a limb, I don't think the use of "Mardi Growl Parade" will adversely affect the image of canines in these parts.

Feb 2nd is not a Saturday. It blows my mind that both the Mayor's letter and the news reflect the incorrect date!
On the other hand, thanks to all the dog lovers out there who are bringing about this super event... whenever it is.
What a great and clever idea!
Now to spread the word to all the dog lovers.

Best get those cease and desist forms lined up.

When I first saw the headline, I thought the post would be about "dog and pony shows" during the campaign season.
Then I realized, it's about a real dog parade. It sounds like a great idea.
Seems like the love of animals and nature is about the only thing that may transcend politics this time of year.

I'd better get that HoundDog Day moniker trademarked fast. It was only free to the City of Knoxville.
Sorry Tess and Michael.
But good for CAFKIA. And the City for doing this!
I'm so excited about a dog park so close to home.
Well, Dakota will be excited too.
Well, let me know if anyone wants "mardigrowl.com."
(am I the only one who thinks of these things?) :)
I think you would be better off grabbing HoundDog Day.com
Much less negative than that growl day thingy.

Well, someone got that about seven years ago, so we're a bit late there.
Get what you can, then.
I'm SEVEN years behind the curve?
Hmmm and Damn!
Why have a dog walk (costume parade) in the middle of winter?
Why give it a name, Mardi Growl, with a negative connatation?

"Mardi Drool?"
The 'Wag Your Tail Parade'
How about "A Dog Trod?"
Hoz bout an intentional misspelling so as to make it Mardi "Grawl" so the connection to "Gras" is more immediately evident?

In the spirit of I can has cheezburger now?, Mardi Pawz (with a "z") seems to be available.
I didn't run a trademark search on it, but the .com, .net, and .org domains are all untaken.

That is a name the community can sink its teeth into.
They will sit up and beg for t-shirts
Those who disagree should just lay down and roll over
, let's just hope that this fetches a lot of support.

Uh, this is for last year's parade. Haven't posted about this year's parade. Thanks for the reminder!
